49ers are sticking with Alex Smith

I wrote last night how sad a moment it was for the 49ers when the San Francisco fans chanted “We want Carr, We want Carr” in the fourth quarter against the Eagles.

After some initial confusion, Mike Singletary stuck with Alex Smith. And the former No. 1 overall pick responded with two touchdown drives. In return, Singletary will stick with Smith for another week as the team’s starting quarterback, although he says Smith’s status is “week-to-week.”

Singletary can identify.

There were questions after Sunday night’s game whether Singletary would even keep his job another week. He got the dreaded vote of confidence, but nothing would surprise in San Francisco at this point.

The only thing that would truly shock was David Carr coming in and turning the offense around. The 49ers offense has been poor, but Smith is coming off his best performance of the year. His yards-per-attempt and completion percentage are actually up from last year. San Francisco has major problems beyond Smith.

This is probably Smith’s last season in San Francisco, but there’s no need to go to Carr with eleven games left. It would be as hollow a gesture as guaranteeing a playoff berth.
