Report: Clay Matthews will return for Packers

Here’s something different: good injury news for the Packers.

Steve Wyche of NFL.com reports that Packers linebacker Clay Matthews will return to the field this week after missing one game with a hamstring injury.

While the Packers lost linebacker Brady Poppinga last week, they could get back Matthews and cornerback Al Harris for their game against the Vikings.  Harris has been the PUP list all season.

  1. Crap. He’ll make Loadholt look like a turnstile — until he reinjures the hammy because he hasn’t given it enough time to heal.

  2. Vikings fans had better not think for one minute that this news means the Packers don’t have plenty of excuses in case the unthinkable happens.
    The silence you hear…

  3. Surprise surprise. Viking ‘fans’ are the first to comment. I guess they have nothing else better to do in their long, lonely, pointless Minnesota lives.
“Great that way I don’t have to hear the poor lil packer fans cry about injuries when we smack them around this week.”
Actually no it’s going to be the other way around. The Packers will be the one smacking around the lil purple losers you Viking idiots call a ‘football team’.

  4. Thank You!!! Knew those PED’s would have him healthy as a…horse. Now you turds have no excuse when we roll into Lambeau for your crushing defeat. “We didn’t have our best D player, etc….” will not be tolerated

  5. I don’t think the Vikings are able to smack anyone around yet this year. If the Vikings walk out of there with a fluke win, fans had better be ecstatic .
This is the best Vikings defense I’ve seen in years. The run D isn’t elite like the past few years, but it’s still damn good. Vikings pass D is much much better. Just need Favre to get in a rhythm and J Allen to start putting up some sacks.

  6. I was kind of hoping he would sit another week. He’s nothing Kleinsasser can’t handle, but without him, Packers had absolutely no pass rush last week.

  7. kleinsasser can handle matthews? wrong, no1 can just ‘handle’ clay matthews. how can you vikings fans be this arrogant. the vikings havent looked good either. remember they were supposed to be a top 5 team. at least the pack have a legit excuse. your not missing NEARLY as many people. 2 of the packs 4 best players were out. and now it will only be 1. i said if clay matthews is b ack the packers win. so now im sticking with that. GB secondary going to tear favre up now they have a pass rush.

  9. Classic! Viking fans calling out Packer fans for making excuses. Pot meet kettle.
And I hate to break the news to you Vikings fans but the 2009 season is over. Your team is flat out not capable of blowing any team out this year. You would think after that impressive offensive display against the Cowgirls on Sunday, your ignorant asses would have realized that by now.

  10. Pack 35
    Just-another-Expansion- Team Violet Queens 17
    The Traitor retires at halftime.
    (Still on way to 4-12.)
Snoose “fans” won’t even be able to talk hockey smack this year because the Goofers suck too. (Swept by Nebraska-Omaha.) woot woot

  11. I’m a Vikings fans AND a big Clay Matthews fan (it’s called respect — just like I was a fan of Aaron Kampman and I’m sure some Packer fans may be a fan of AP, Percy Harvin, or Jared Allen out of respect).
A bad hammy is a dangerous thing because it’s such a slow healing injury. Often players are never the same until the next season. Either he doesn’t go full speed and will look average, or he goes all out. And if that’s the case all it takes all it takes is one step or extra hard push off to reinjure it and be lost for an extended period.

  12. SoCal, The Packers had a lot of pass rush last week, it was just coming from the Phins when Rodgers turned a called 3-step drop into a five and didn’t dump it off. Injuries are an excuse when it’s 2-3 guys. Packers have gone beyond that and been hit hard in key spots but the defense has not been too bad. MM’s play calling, the offense and Rodgers need to get it together…hopefully on Sunday night. I hate the Vikings.

  13. Very interesting (as Schultz would say) that there are more packer fans commenting on the vikes site than here… I thought I would have read that now with their best defensive guy back, they would CRUSH our ass… but to naught… McKensy, (see IO don’t even care about spelling his name) will be puling up lmp against MOSS… remember way back when GB loaded up on d’backs BECAUSE of MOSS and it did not do them much good????
    Vikes 21-14

  14. My apologies.. I meant AL HARRIS… not Mike Mckensy (see spelling again, that is how much I hate the cheese…) he will pull up limp.. (or hold as much as your other d’back, (no names inserted) who is CONSTANTLY getting beat and has to hold

  15. Let’s all be honest with ourselves. Both of our teams aren’t living up to our expectations this year. If you disagree, then you’re an idiot.

  16. yep everything bad happens to the packers..no one else. you fans are ridicoulous.
not a fan of either team, but GO VIKINGS this week.
everyone gets injured. vikings are playing without their safety (abdullah) they are at the 3rd string center, c griffin done for the year, chris cook hasnt played yet and Rice is out. quit bitching about your injuries packers.
go bragg about how your GM has 45 out 53 players on the team that are drafted….good job!! maybe thats why they suck right now when a few starters get hurt. Free agents add starters, draft picks add depth. Stupid tedd thompson

  17. Don’t have a horse in this race, but look forward to Packers/Vikings fans comments leading up to and after the game, always highly entertaining…And yes, i come here for the comments Florio, and rarely read the two paragraph pulitzer winning blurbs you and you’re “staff” actually consider journalism.

  18. I don’t think Al Harris will make a big impact considering he hasn’t played yet this year and his injury was so severe that no one thought he would play again.
I’m not hopeful at all for this season. I do enjoy reading all the comments from the Queens fans though. You’re team will probably be better than ours this year, but you will not do anything of significance.
With that said I will be at the game at Lambeau this weekend. I have some neat tricks planned to make sure all the Queens feel right at home. Time for a BEER BATH!!! It’s gonna be awesome.

  19. This weekend would be a nice time to put together four complete quarters. Hopefully, Harris and Bigby can play and with the addition of Matthews my confidence in our chance of winning has risen dramatically. With all that said our “juggernaut” of an offense needs to get it together and that starts with McCarthy calling a decent game for once this year. Queens Blow more than horn! GO PACK!

  20. It’s interesting that people comment how great the Vikings D is this year, but if you look at points allowed the Packers are virtually the same- and that’s without 4-5 starters in the mix for most of the season.
The Packers have allowed more yards, but their D hasn’t been all that bad even with all the injuries.
Matthews is a difference maker so it’s good to see he’ll be back.

  21. It took a Packer legend to turn the Viqueens into Vikings. You whiners could never get your own QB so you had to rely on getting one that beat you repeatedly for over a decade. Except Old Man Pevre is too worried about Jenn and Deanna and keeps throwing last minute INTs to lose you games. How’s he workin’ out for ya? I can already hear the whining when you don’t make the playoffs, it’ll be all Brint’s fault. But then next year you’re back to TJack, and the whining will just continue. It must really suck to be a Viqueens fan.

  22. Kinda obvious they would rather have him as close to healthy for this game than have him test the hammy a non-conference game. Its going to be a tough game, and hope GB can get through this game healthy and with a win.

  23. “They will just get hurt again. They remind of glass Joe in Tysons punchout. Pussies!”
Yes all non-kickers in the NFL are pussies if they get injured. What a dumb ass statement. Climb out of your mother’s basement and go try out for a football team. I know the sun is probably foreign to you, so make sure to put on some sunscreen. And make sure to wear your Depends so you have something to soil yourself in when a 255 pound linebacker with 4.5 speed comes running at you.

  24. What started off as such a promising season for both teams has deteriorated into an ugly situation, at least at this point, for both teams. Probably salvageable, but realistically, no real success may actually materialize this year.
Injuries have hurt both teams, but it seems like the Packers have taken the bigger hit in that dept. Who honestly could have seen them losing this many starters/key players? You expect one or two over the course of the year, but not each week.
Who possibly could have predicted this whole Brett Favre mess? We expect to see his name in the news all the time, but definitely not his junk.
And who could have predicted such crappy coaching… well OK, we all could have predicted that… but we expected the talent on the field to overcome it.

  25. Wow. Must be first time in football history that a player came back from a hamstring injury in 7 days. Then again this is the same team that put their franchise QB back on the field 7 days after a concussion so no suprise i guess. TT and MM are already in separation mode.

  26. LOL, look at all the scurred queen fans hoping he re-injures his hammy or that he hasn’t had long enough to recover.
Kumsauserdumpster is going to look stoopid on Sunday.
    I smell fear.

Nice to hear from a reasonable Vike fan (hear that, Pervy?)
I hate to say it Bob…but you’re right. I have to wonder if Matthews would play this week if it wasn’t the Vikings?

  28. Mathews coming back will be helpful but he won’t be full-speed with a bum wheel. Until Al Harris & Bigby get a couple games under their belts they’ll be ineffective too. Hate to say it but with as soft as the Packers are up the middle AP’s going to run rampant. Not going to be pretty in Lambeau. And I’m a Packers fan.

  29. Neither team has a offensive line!
basically which ever line holds up the best wins. Simple as that.
Clay Mathews is a beast though! On the the hand Viking have Peterson. So I call a draw!

    ____________________________________
This is true, and I am of the opinion that the Packers fans have a legit excuse with all the injuries. I’m surprised they been playing as well as they have. They’ve had a chance to win every game even with all the injuries.
I still think the Vikes win on Sunday though. I just don’t think the Packers O-line can block our front 7 and it will be hard for their D to put 8 in the box with Moss in the line-up.

  32. Matthews is a beast but I wonder if he would be playing this week if not for 2 things: 1) Packer’s are desperate to end their slide and 2) if it weren’t against a divisional rival in vikings.
I think the Pack is taking a HUGE risk playing Matthews. Hammy’s usually take more than one week to heal and playing on them too soon could make it a year long injury. Matthews depends on his speed and a bad hammy could make him somewhat ineffective or tentative.
The Packers have been hit by a rash of serious injuries but let’s not forget that the Vikings have been playing the entire year thus far with 5 starters not having seen the field. Both starting CB’s on defense really hurts as does having to play a 3rd string center who is a rookie and having one of the best wr’s in S. Rice out. E.J. Henderson is less than a year removed from a major injury, loss of the best 3rd down back in football in Chester Taylor and the ole’ gray fox playing with a bad ankle and tendinitis in his elbow. Injuries happen to every team, it is where a teams depth proves invaluable.
No trash talk intended here but saw an interesting statistic today. Did you know that A. Rodgers is 1-11 in games where the Packers lost by 4 or less points. It does support the notion that thus far he is really only a stats qb at this stage. Ya gotta admit, it is a very telling statistic…almost alarming when you think about it.
As Peter King would say, …..I think this weekend’s game is more important for the Packers than Vikings as Vikings are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and will be playing their easy half of schedule soon, plus once they get S. Rice back they will be the most potent and complete offense in the nfl whereas the Packers are in the midst of their injuries and have a much tougher second half schedule vs. their first half.

  33. I have had 2 big ham string injuries in my day…ass and back thigh colored Viking purple…if he has anything close to what I had he is in NO WAY ready to play.Period. Packers desperate I see…

Me being a Pack fan I agree with you. If AP should start to fumble again, which I doubt he will I would take him in a heart beat when the fans start to complain about him. I think Harvin is more of a threat to GB than Moss is. There is players on both side that deserve respect from Vike’s,and Pack fans.

  35. Will be a miracle if the Pack wins this week. Too many players missing & idiots as coaches. Only advantage will be if the Vikes idiot coach makes more mistakes than the Packs. Problem is, player on player, the Vikes have an advantage due to the Packs injuries. I’ll still give it a 50-50 though, Childress still has to aout coach McCarthy. Close battle but the Pack still has a chance.

12 world championships, most of those came before 1960 when there were 6 teams in the league. Wow, so impressive.

  37. Ok, to all the Doctors in the room….. Matthews injury was SO minor that he could have played against the Dolphins… and then comments about it being risky would be justified might have been justified. Look for him to have a huge day as he is our only hope on D.

  38. I am not a doctor and I don’t play one on TV.
Love to see all these CryQueen MD’s coming on this site and offering their best medical advice. Clay mentioned that he felt like he could have played last week but the real doctors decided to play it safe. So all your conjecture about the fear the Packers are feeling is really just your internal emotions being turned out.
All I know for sure is these Packer games were the biggest reason BrINT returned, that and his records including his most consecutive starts by a QB with a 4 inch weiner. (sorry Deb, I know you wish it were more but the good Lord blessed his arm and little else) Matters little, the Vikings haven’t won a Superbowl in their first 49 years and this year isn’t looking good either.

  39. PS, I think it’s funny when fans call out rival fans for posting on their teams’ news stories or web sites. It’s always “you guys have nothing better to do….” Like, uh, nobody here has anything better to do. C’mon.

  40. Viking fans are so funny. You would think that their team has won 12 NFL Championships. Wait, that would be the Packers. Ever hear the song in the Year 2525? Well, that’s when the Vikings may finally win a championship. In the meantime, keep up the smack talk. Like Howard Cossell use to say “You are all legends in your own minds”.

  41. Surprise Surprise, Packers4life was fourth to post. Hey guys some people have lives and cant be the very first one to post. Must have been pretty busy with your life there to have taken so long to read and respond to the article.

  42. “12 world championships, most of those came before 1960 when there were 6 teams in the league. Wow, so impressive.”
6 teams or 32 teams, it was still the NFL so therefore it still counts.

Oh Jimmy, you just don’t get it do ya, what has it been 2 years now of your silly rants? Your the biggest hypocrite known to this site- going into all of the Vikings threads and making Doogie Houser, MD look straight.
I love how you post on here like your a sideline reporter for both the Vikings and the Pack. We all know you have been on the sidelines for years, just not for football. Glad that you mentioned that Brett cam back for these games, how have those worked out again so far? ? ? Exactly, I like our chances this week!
Yeah the Vikes have not won the Superbowl, are you a rocket scientist now- thanks for the update mangenious… but I hate to say this year ain’t looking good for the Puke either- and unless you have been living under a rock- coming off 3 losses in your last 4 games and talking the smack you do is well… like having the confidence Brett has with a 4 inch wiener…..except we all know you would kill to be 4 inches…. huh bro?
Like I have told you before Jimmy I am a realist, pull your head out of you arse and figure it out one of these days, any team from the NFC north isn’t getting very far if you really understand football- your precious Puke included!
Just call me the Bus Driver Jimmy- I’ll always be taking you to school!

  44. Packer fans, have you watched your team this year? They looked pretty pathetic when healthy. Did you watch last season? And your defense got better how?
I don’t see the Vikes looking like world-beaters thus far but I do see them improving. The Pack is going backward.
I don’t think the Pack stands a chance in this game, with or without Matthews.
Favre to Moss, Favre to Harvin etc and AP.
    Good luck!

  45. Harris is gonna be back bigby is back with t will moving to nickel. Mathews is gonna turn that line into Swiss cheese

  46. Hopefully the Vikings go into Green Bay and shut that damn team up real good.
All the Viking fans ever see on this site is all you Packer fans bitchin’ about this and luaghin’ over that towards Minnesota.
We know as Viking fans how superior are team is over yours ok. Its just that easy when you look at the two and the Minnesota Vikings obviously have more talent across the board. So, this game should shut ya’ll up over in ‘Sconnie ville. Ok.
Last time I checked the Viking offense needs to get in check, other then that they gotta pretty damn good defense and adrian peterson. On the other side of the river you all have barely gotten by Phi and walked over the worst team in Buff. Then, latly, been gettin ur behind handed to ya by Chi, Wash, Mia.
Ya’ll better hope you can find a way to beat the Vikings in ur hollowed Lambeau. Otherwise Minnesota can really make a run as this schedule easies up and that offense gets in rythym. if they do… that offense could set the league on fire.

  47. The Vikings have had injuries, but think about this for a minute-
    Grant- gone (IR)
    Tauscher- gone (IR)
    Finley- gone (IR)
    Barnett- gone (IR)
    Burnett- gone (IR)
    Bigby- PUP’d
    Harris – PUP’d
    Matthews – missed one week
Chillar – out for several weeks
    Pickett- out for several weeks
    Lee- out for several weeks
Jenkins – busted hand but playing
I’m not even counting a guy like Jolly (suspended) or Clifton or Woodson or Clifton – who are probably playing at about 80% right now.
That’s an incredible list when you consider that most if not all of those guys are starters. I don’t think any other team in the league comes close to that.
This is why I wish the league would allow teams to expand the active rosters to like, 60 players. Every team will incur injuries, but if you get yourself into a spot where literally 1/3 of your starters are lost for the year it’s hard to compete week in and week out.

  48. Mr. Humble said:
“No trash talk intended here but saw an interesting statistic today. Did you know that A. Rodgers is 1-11 in games where the Packers lost by 4 or less points.”
If that’s the case, then Rodgers must be a miracle worker. Can you explain where that one win came from, Darwin? How does a team win when they lose by 4 points or less.

  49. Faver to Moos… you are a totally a brilliant tool. Recess must have been early today for you to be online. Keep the hard work up so you can make 6th grade next year. Oh, and by the way, what’s happening with ol mud-slinger farve anyway? Did he buy his long trenchcoat yet and stock up on candy for the little girls??? What a hoot! Glad you guys have that basket case.

  50. Rodgers is going to destroy the Vikings weak secondary. Lito Sheppard and Asher allen might want to pack their suitcases after this game.
You can’t use Moss, Harvin, etc if you don’t give your QB more than a 1/2 second of time to throw. Clay Matthews will destroy Favre because the Vikings have forgotten that picking up a blitz is kind of important for a 41 year old QB. And I’m a Vikings fan.

  51. Matthews is a one play wonder. Somebody dared to say he better than Ray Lewis. Maybe in one game but Ray Ray is doing this for some 15 years. Matthews can’t stay healthy for a full season. What good is LB if you do not know if you have him next week?

  52. Hey “packer4life” I’m pretty sure you guys just lost to the dolphins… at home. Yeah, your not smacking ANYBODY around… I know it hurt watching brett and the purple losers stomp you twice last year, it might hurt worse this year.

  53. @Notoroius B.U.G.
Remind me again, what is the Vikings record?
How many Superbowls have they won?
What is their record in the last 5 NFC championship games?
Ya, I would be talking big time smack if there were any success to talk about, that’s what makes the CryQueen fans so obnoxious. They talk and talk and talk but when it come to the playing field, they choke and choke and choke.

This seems to be the “default” statement for Packer fans that have no hope for their team this year. Who cares if the Packers have won exactly ONE Championship in the last 40+ years! It is completely irrelevant and does NOTHING to help this current Packer team.

  55. Hey Jimmy,
You mean the Vikings might choke, like last year for instance, when we swept the puckers. They will be our Bee-Otches again Sunday Night.

  56. Let’s all be honest with ourselves. Both of our teams aren’t living up to our expectations this year. If you disagree, then you’re an idiot.

  57. Hey, here’s a thought….
Current Vikings players have more rings than current Packers players. And since we are supposed to be talking about the game on sunday and the prospects for this season, how about we forget about seasons played before Nixon was inaugurated and focus on the current teams, okay?
    And as to that….
    1) Either injuries matter or they don’t. I have yet to see a Packer fan attack the Vikings passing game without acknowledging the impact of not having their PB WR on the field. So if the Packers’ injuries make a difference in their on-field performance, than so do the Vikings’.
    2) Before attacking the run D and lack of sack totals the Vikings have this year, watch the front seven. They are not attacking as they have previously. The LBs are dropping into coverage faster, and the DL is being asked to play more 2-gap . The injuries to the Vikings CBs have caused defensive adjustments that have hampered the normally stout run D and slowed the pass rush, but have kept the Vikings in the top-10 in total defense and in every game thus far. Thank you for the adjustments, Leslie Frazier. Will you please kill Chilly and take over?
    3) It’s been slow on the Vikings threads, and I’m sick of hearing about that Sturgeon lady…. How ya’ll doing over here?

Actually no it doesnt count. Those past championships are about of valuable as wooden coins. No one cares about what happened in a 6 man league. Do those past ‘championships’ pay the bills today? No…so get over it. They mean nothing.
BTW – the Vikings have 1 national championship but do Vikings fans go around parading it? no. You know why? Because it means nothing.
Also – curious to know how Packer fans defend themselves against 6 Steeler Lombardis versus the 3 Packer Lombardis. What…ohhh I know…12 national…WHO CARES!

@Jimmysee–Mr Humble meant Rodgers is 1-11 in close Packer games where there was a 4 point differetinal towards the end of the game. If you go to today’s one liners and look at the one about the Pack you can actually link to the article. I actually find it a little disheartening.
The game can go either way on Sunday. We’ll just have to wait & see

  61. Hi, I’m a dumbass Packer fan. You’ll remember me from last year. “The Vikings will never beat us… (after Vikings win) Well, they still suck and will never beat us again… (after Vikings win 2nd time) Well, they still suck and will never win the division or make the playoffs… (after Vikings win the division and make the playoffs) The Vikings still suck and will never win a playoff game… (after Vikings make NFC Championship Game) The Vikings still suck and will never make the Superbowl…(after Vikings lose to Saints in OT) See, I told you all along how much they sucked! Go Pack! 12 Championships from 70 years ago!! Aaron Rodgers is the best ever!! Woohoo!!”
