Johnson, Talib, Masthay named NFC players of the week

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib and Packers punter Tim Masthay have been named the NFC players of the week.

Johnson won his first career offensive player of the week award for his nine-catch, 101-yard, three-touchdown effort in Detroit’s 37-25 win against Washington. It’s Johnson’s first player of the week award, and the first player of the week award for a Lions wide receiver since Germane Crowell in 1999. (What? You mean Charles Rogers never won it?)

Talib won the defensive player of the week award after he had two interceptions and returned one for a touchdown in the Buccaneers’ 38-35 win at Arizona. Talib is second in the NFL with five interceptions this season, and this was his first player of the week award.

Masthay punted eight times and landed five inside the 20-yard line in the Packers’ 9-0 win at the New York Jets on Sunday. Thanks to Masthay’s hang time, the Jets didn’t have any punt return yardage in the game.
