There may be a day when Mark Sanchez can get on Jets receiver Braylon Edwards for his drops like the fans in Cleveland once did. Sanchez hasn’t reached that level, in Edwards’ mind.
“Once a quarterback gets to a certain point, where his mistakes are far and few between . . . it’s hard to be that [critical] when your mistakes are at a substantial level,” Edwards said Thursday via Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. “That happens with more experience. That happens with more consistency. Then you get that respect when it becomes second nature.”
The question was brought up because the Jets receivers dropped six passes against the Packers. Sanchez said all the right things after the game and took full responsibility the loss.
There will be a day when Sanchez’s mistakes will no longer be at a “substantial level.” It may come in 2011 or 2012. Edwards will be playing for his third team by then.
UPDATE: Edwards said Friday through a Jets spokesman that he was taken out of context. “He was referring to quarterbacks in general, not to Mark Sanchez,” the spokesperson said. “Those comments were not made specifically toward Mark, they were made toward just playing the quarterback position.”
