Report: Wilf weighed firing Brad Childress on Monday

Florio wrote in his 10-pack this morning that Vikings coach Brad Childress could be an ugly home loss to the Cardinals away from losing his job.

It turns out that Childress almost lost his job on Monday night.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that Vikings owner Zygi Wilf was so “irate” after hearing that Childress was dumping Randy Moss (without Wilf’s approval) that Wilf delayed Moss’ placement on waivers.  Moss wasn’t officially an ex-Viking until Tuesday because Wilf was weighing whether to keep Moss and boot Childress.

Wilf must have made up his mind by Monday night, when the team allowed Childress to release a statement confirming Moss’ release

Childress has survived this week, but his handling of Moss looks like it will be his undoing as Vikings head coach.  Chilly’s lack of communication skills has seemingly infected his relationship with his players, fellow coaches, and his boss.

  1. What happens first –
Chilly gets another head coach job or Pete Rose gets into the Hall of Fame?

  2. Being a fan of the Vikings, I seriously hate to say this, but I almost hope they tank the game just to get rid of Childress………

  3. I wonder how many players Wilf has talked to.
Been following Vikings coverage on KFAN.com.
    Fans are still pissed off.
Sunday’s game should be interesting. The Vikes better not get behind early or it could get ugly.
Some fans don’t even care if the Vikings lose, as long as Chilly get the boot.

  4. What a freaking disaster
Thank you Minnesota Vikings!! Packers Fans all over are loving this.
    “Superbowl Homeboy”
Let the schism begin. You can’t make this stuff up!!

  5. Wilf should have pulled the trigger on Monday and kept Moss. I am a diehard Vikings fan but im actually hoping that they lose this weekend against AZ so Chilly can get fired. Is that so wrong of me!?!?!?!

  6. Hahaha if that’s the case, I hope we lost to the Cardinals by 17+ and then win the rest of the games!

  7. As much as Chilly is a total bafoon… firing him would only bring more instability and uncertainty to the organization. If there’s any hope of a rebound you can’t axe the head coach. That just reeks of surrender… however if he loses at home to a rather poor Cards team.. walk him to the guillotine.

  8. “Chilly’s lack of communication skills”
Yeah, no doubt. the guy sounds like he eats glass.
I cant stand to listen to him.
    somebody give him some water.

  9. Bears don’t like their coach. Vikings don’t like their coach. Could they trade?
Packers and Lions fans approve of this!

  10. Yeah, I think we all kind of figured this out when it was transpiring…
My fear: Childress wins sunday, wins a few more, then loses just enough, fails to make play-offs, and they start all over. Might as well make the change now.
If it werent for the Catering incident (which is despicable),validating Moss’ attitude, Childress would be gone!
Randy, should have just kept on telling everyone how bad Childress is, instead of the food!
Of course, seeing as it looks like half the team is not playing anyway (odd, no?), it may be a forfeit.
On a side note, I think as a fan, I cant show up to my Sunday Ticket because my eyes have been hurting all season.

  11. Must be true if Ed Werder reported it, eh?
Gregg Rosenthal quoting an Ed Werder report. Now if that isn’t something that can be trusted, I don’t know what is.

  12. C’mon Zygi!! Should have pulled the trigger! He who hesitates, masturbates….. or something like that.

  13. And Chilly is under contract for three more seasons. Brilliant move with that contract extension Zygi.

  14. Maybe Wilf wants to wait until the Viqueens season is totally down the toilet before he dumps this moron!

  15. They are 8 point favorites against the Cardinals this weekend. If they lose this game he WILL be gone. Boy, I bet Lord Favre really regrets his descision to come back. All he has done this year is put himself front and center of a 24/7 soap opera. Not to mention the fact he probably could have avoided the whole Jen Sterger debacle if he would have just retired. He also could have avoided being booed off of Lambeau Field injured and defeated. If only chilly wouldn’t have sent the support group down south to pressure him to come back. No wonder he hates Chilly so much.

  16. I think this may be one of the few times I’m actually rooting for a Vikings loss. Seriously, the guy has gotta go, and if 2-6 makes that a reality, then I welcome it, as hard as it is to say.

  17. I kind of think this is Awesome. Chilly said its him or me and it worked. I mean you have to respect the brass balls it takes to do that. He still is a bad coach, but the man has cajones.

  18. Wilf’s scale must be broken. Childress should be gone regardless of the Moss situation

  19. Wilf, you made a bad call.
That’s twice this team has gotten rid of Moss when somebody else should have left. (Culpepper/Childress)
I’ve been calling for his removal since his 1st season coaching the Vikes. Please fix this regardless of a win/loss on Sunday. Make it happen!

  20. Not being sarcastic but how much more did Wilf pay Favre to get him to come back this year?
Was it an extra 5-6 million or something in addition to what his contract already called for or was that all just a rumor?

  21. Vikings are going no where. Firing him now or at the end of the season really doesn’t matter.

  22. Doesn’t this viking outfit have a general manager? If so, how come we never hear about his part in this soap opera?
Perhaps the first flaw in this purple operation is the way in which the organization is structured. In most cases, coaches do the coaching … and personnel men handle personnel issues.
In a well run organization, I doubt if the quarterback gets to determine in and when he’ll show up for practice, and the coach doesn’t spend most of his day wheeling and dealing with other franchises for players … giving out draft choices for individuals with character flaws.
Getting a new stadium might be the least of this franchise’s issues.

  23. Can’t wait to see the soap opera continue this week. Will Cilly keep his job? Will the hobbled QB keep it in his pants? Will the defense keep anyone out of the endzone? Will the owner keep the Vikings in Minnesota?
Well tune in this Sunday for the next installment of All My Norsman, or As the partyboat floats.

  24. The best thing the Vikings ever did for the Packers was not letting “Chilly” leave town until he signed a contract! He was scheduled to interview in Green Bay after his interview in MN, but the Vikings were so concerned, they wouldn’t let him leave!! Thank you very much!!!

  25. I think their both wrong. Childress may be a glorified, (jerk) Coordinator at best, but Randy Moss is Randy Moss and we should all know that by now (especially Brad Childress).
I just don’t understand all this great talk about Randy? Sure he’s got natural ability and stats, but great players don’t take plays off, (as he has with all the teams he’s been on) or run over traffic cop’s, or insult food vendors for no damn reason! And they sure as hell don’t throw people under the bus.

  26. The only reason he wasn’t fired immediately is because of perception.
No matter how much Wilf wanted to fire him he can’t make it look like a player got a coach fired by acting out.
    Best to wait a week!

  27. Just to show some class,,something I have discovered the Viking fans do not have….
This is a shame, and No professional sports team should behave like this…
Drama Queen Favre started it all,,,and Col. Klink
did not handle that correctly,, now this….just bad..
Some men should not be head coaches..Childress is one of them…
    Go Packers

  28. First of all, a guy named Zigi doesn’t deserve an NFL franchise. Secondly, a guy who’s appearance is as comical and ridiculous as Zigi’s doesn’t deserve an NFL franchise. Thirdly, any owner who allows players and fans to dictate what happens in an NFL organization doesn’t deserve an NFL franchise. And this is why the Vikings make the Raiders look like the picture perfect illustration of well run franchise. Inmates running the asylum in Minny.
Kurt Warner should come back just for this week to smoke the Vikings and kill their season.

  29. L.A! L.A, L.A, L.A! LA, L.A!……
I wonder if the Vikings will still be in the NFC north after they move?

  30. So, whose the next coach for the Vikes? Any takers? Any takers worth their salt? I am sure you could get Brian Billick to run right down there and coach em up. He was hard up enough to go to Buffalo and couldnt figure out why he was turned down. He did OK in purple but Ozzie Newsome was the man who made it all go in Bmore..

    ========
NOOOOOO!! Childress actually makes Lovie look like a genius! Okay, let’s not go that far, but you get my drift….

  32. Umm… Viking fans, don’t treat AZ so lightly. They beat New Orleans & Oakland and have a better W-L record than your team. MIN might be a 9 point favorite but I see them losing this one just like they have already done 5 times this season. 31-24 Cardinals. Bye bye Chilly!

  33. Actually, Minnesota is 2 1/2 games out- but more like 3 out because GB beat them head to head.
They only have 9 games left so in effect MN would have to go 7-2 to finish at 10 wins whereas GB only has to go 5-3 the rest of the way- or worse if they can beat MN head to head again.
If the Vikes lose this week their season is over. It might not matter anyway since they still have to play GB, Giants, Eagles, Chicago (twice).

  34. This is clear evidence that Wilf is not only at the end of the leash with Childress, but also with the Vikings and the state of Minnesota. I think he is fed up with everything.
If the state legislative session doesn’t come out with a new stadium by next year, I firmly believe Wilf is going to attempt to dump the team. With all of this drama and BS that has been going on this year, coupled with the new stadium situation gaining no ground, Wilf has to be completely fed up owning an NFL franchise that is truly snake-bit.
Just think how much money he has poured into this sinking franchise to create excitement, positivity and support for a new stadium, and it has gotten him no closer to a stadium than when he purchased the team in late 2005.
When, not if, but when new Minnesota governor Mark Dayton shoots down any hope for a new stadium in the next 2 years, look for Wilf to hit the ejection seat and sell to the highest bidder.

  35. I swore I’d never hope for the Vikings to lose again , but if that’s what it takes to get rid of Childress then lets lose. Interesting listening to Childress’ comments again today, they guy couldn’t get “real” if he tried.

  36. I posted earlier. But, let me add this as well for those of you who think Zygi made a mistake: Randy, while I enjoy him as a player and as a character, could not lead to the coach being fired and remain a Viking as well. What kind of precedent would that set for a guy that has all sorts of issues, historically speaking? What an ego trip for an egomaniac.
The thing to do was to dismiss Randy, then Chilly as well. This team has a strong nucleus. It just needs to get a jolt.

  37. Team Turmoil…like gas, this too will pass.
I hope Wilf realizes that keeping Moss would have been a mistake. Keeping Childress may also be a mistake.

  38. sorry, Zygi, but you’ve already lost a fan. you cut the wrong guy loose. a lot of fans, like myself, will never forgive the organization for this one. years and years of disappointment, then a flash of hope with Moss signing. then he is cut less than a month later. This is the wave that will sink this vikings organization in MN.
Moss wanted childress fired. Childress didn’t like it. he cuts moss. Wilf didn’t want moss cut, but somehow let it happen and kept childress. monday after the vikings lose, they’ll possibly fire childress. too late. season is over if they lose 1 more game.
move this team to LA and make some money off the investment, Zygi. the dome is only going to get emptier as the year goes on. the fans are not going to come back after this one.

  39. The NFL is all about the money, and keeping the fans happy and the seats filled. If Ziggy was so smart, he should have dumped Chilly, who brings no fans to the game, and kept Randy, who packs the house. Just imagine the good feeling we would have right now with Chilly gone and Randy still in the house.

  40. ” Chilly’s lack of communication skills”??
What about his utter lack of coaching skills?
Wilf, you freaking blew it boy.
Childo’s lost the locker room and now you’ve lost the fans.
Might as well start looking for a buyer, because I guarantee you, sales of tickets and merchandise will never be the same until you AND Childress are gone.

  41. Derek Anderson and Beanie Wells are going to light up the Vikes.
(God, I hope so….go chilly, go very far away)

  42. Chester Copperpot says..”Wilf should have pulled the trigger on Monday and kept Moss. I am a diehard Vikings fan but im actually hoping that they lose this weekend against AZ so Chilly can get fired. Is that so wrong of me!?!?!?!”
Yes, that makes you a cocksucker.

That’s incredibly racist. Zygmunt (a very common Polish name variant) Wilf, the son of Jewish holocaust survivors should be respected and admired for the ashes that he rose out of in his parent’s shadows.
Let me guess, you’re a Bible Belt Xenophobe?

  44. After 2 embarrasing losses and the fiasco that is this season, one must ask themself, what the hell is he waiting for?
    2-14?
You lost Ziggy. Done failed. Game over.
Sooner the realize it, the less we laugh.

  45. L.A! L.A, L.A, L.A! LA, L.A!……
I wonder if the Vikings will still be in the NFC north after they move?
    _____________
It would make sense to move the Rams into the NFC Central and put the Vikings (or whatever they’re called after the move) to the NFC West.

  46. Watch HBO Inside the NFL. Moss comes off yelling at the whole sideline(mainly Chilly I believe) “What the f*uck are you doing? What the f*ck are you doing?”
Moss is a competitor. Not kicking a field goal and other crap in NE blew his mind. Remember,he is used to the Hoodie, one of the coaching greats.Oh well,Moss is gone. Can only hope Childo is right behind him!

  47. Les Steckel was a better coach. Wilf made a terrible mistake as well letting Moss go and in keeping that stupid Ned Flanders of a coach Childress.

  48. Isn’t true when Randy came back…. CHILDRESS wouldn’t even allow an on field special welcome back ANNOUNCEMENT to a future hall of fame player who gave us PURE ENTERTAINMENT and hope in each and every game.
OTHER TEAMS DO IT IN SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
    FIRE CHILDRESS
I hope there are “FIRE CHILDRESS OR ELSE” tailgater sign up tables everywhere Sunday so the petitions can be sent to Wilf…….

  49. I think Childress could/should be fired after the Cardinals game…even if the Vikings win big. It is obvious the owner is pissed but why give Childress that power in the first place. Moss acting that way (on and off the field) was deserving of being cut but firing Childress sends a bad message…a player just needs to act out for the coach to be fired. Firing him this week is better and affords the interim coach a little more stable locker room.

You are a POS! I think Zig is a super star owner, always ready to open the wallet to get more talent. You don’t know jack shit son…

Calistin, you should have been jerked into a tube sock. Vikings will find their stride.I see the future of the NFC to be the Vikings and the Lions! Yes,I’m 100% serious,if you ignore what is getting slowly put together in Detroit, you would stupid. You guys (Pack) are good but Rodgers will never win the big game…have fun dealing with that every year chud!

  51. You know, if you work for someone, it’s generaly a good idea if you get approval before you make a major decision like dumping a hall of fame receiver. Especialy if you are already on thin ice.

  52. moss asked for it. a few weeks in, bitching about good food and hollering to fire the coach.
he knew chilly was a whack job before he got there.
    fire them both.
