To date, the men hired to serve as coaches of the various UFL franchises have had recognizable names in the coaching profession. From Denny Green to Jim Fassel to Jim Haslett to Ted Cottrell to Chris Palmer to Jeff Jagodzinski to Jay Gruden, the upstart league has yet to throw anyone a curve ball when it comes to head coaching hires.
Until now.
The new franchise that will be headquartered in Virginia will hire former TD Ameritrade CEO Joe Moglia to serve as its head coach, according to Tom Robinson of the Virginian-Pilot.
Moglia, 60, spent 16 years as a high school and college coach before leaving the profession in 1983. He served as TD Ameritrade’s CEO from 2001 through 2008. Moglia then resigned to become an unpaid adviser to Bo Pelini at Nebraska. (Technically, he’s a “life skills and leadership consultant.”)
With the Virginia team also lacking an owner, don’t be surprised if it we eventually learn that Moglia got the job because he bought the team.
Hey, if Jerry Jones can buy an NFL team and make himself G.M., Moglia can buy the Virginia UFL franchise and make himself coach.
