Vikings wanted to know if Moss would come back

Since the Vikings, coach Brad Childress, and receiver Randy Moss have dominated the reporting leading up to kickoff of Week Nine’s action, here’s another intriguing piece of information that we’ve uncovered.

Ed Werder of ESPN recently reported that Vikings owner Zygi Wilf considered firing Childress and keeping Moss after the front office became aware of Chily’s desire to chop Moss off the roster. Though this creates the impression that Wilf chose Childress over Moss, that may not be the case.

Per a league source, the Vikings at one point on Monday tried to gauge whether Moss wanted to return after word of his impending release surfaced. Moss didn’t want to come back, and so the Childress-or-Moss option evaporated.

And now we know why Childress pulled the pin on the Moss grenade without telling anyone. Childress knew Moss well enough to know that once Moss became aware of the situation, the he-goes-or-I-go debate would have become moot.
