Vikings fire Brad Childress

Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress has been fired.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports first reported, and the Vikings have confirmed, that Childress has been fired.

This morning the Vikings announced that Childress would meet the press for his regularly scheduled weekly press conference, which some assumed meant he was safe for at least another week.

But that assumption was incorrect: Childress is out.

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has been named the interim head coach for the rest of the 2010 season. Frazier and Vikings owner Zygi Wilf will address the media this afternoon.

  14. Childress did not have a prayer to keep his job. Bringing Farve in this year started his shovels of dirt for his grave early and often. Farve has been a great player but all his antics the last few years have cost more jobs as he gets his million a game for what, throw int and games.

  24. There’s hope yet for this franchise. I don’t care what anyone here says, Zygi is the best owner this team has had, and today is day zero for rebuilding trust with the fans. Frazier has a good rapport with the team, so this could be an interesting end to the season. I’m not saying there’s much of a chance for the playoffs, but 2011 just got that much brighter.

  36. i feel badly for childress, it’s a tough time and you never want to see anyone lose his job. he’s not the most personable dude, but he never seemed like a “bad” guy either. Of course, this doesn’t mean he deserves to be head coach of a professional football team, which is an elite position.

    As a packers fan living in MN, I’m dialed in to the local sports media. I think Les Frazier has an enormous opportunity here. He’s been the head of a great defense for a while now — but the way that D has played so far this year, you have to wonder if he would’ve had a good shot at a head coaching gig this off-season? But with the interim gig, he has a chance to prove himself as a leader. Should be interesting to see what he does with it.

  50. They should just call it for what it is and play their QBs like they did in the preseason. Favre for 1 quarter, then Tarvaris and Webb for the rest of the game. This way Favre can get his 300 starts and they can at least prepare for next year.

    Anyway, as a non-Vikings fan, I would say that the firing of Brad Childress is totally meaningless if the Vikings do not bench Favre as well. Favre has only thrown 10 touchdowns this year as opposed to turning over the ball 22 times. Any other quarterback would have been benched a long time ago.

    Sure, because if the Vikings win, they would have resigned Childress to a 5-year extension.

    Childress was gone, whether now or at the end of the season. The Packers game may have only hurried the process.

We had no receivers for most of the season because of Childress. It has NOTHING to do with Favre or Green Bay. The team quit 2 weeks ago – before the last GB game. With a decent coach we’d have beat GB twice for sure. Heck, we DID beat GB the first game in Lambeau; the refs admitted they screwed up 2 TD’s. So Pecker fans really shouldn’t be so arrogant. And Favre is not the problem. Geez, he just threw for 446 yards 2 weeks ago to save Childress that time. Hopefully Favre comes back, Rice gets healthy (a decent coach would have told him to have surgery in the off-season), and we get a decent coach.

  112. As a Vikings fan, of course I’m glad that Childress is finally out. But it was 3 weeks too late. I wanted Moss to stay and Childress to go. That being said, hopefully Green Bay keeps winning so they can have a schedule next year like we had this year. Make them play all the best teams and all road games in the first half of the season. So I hope they win a lot now…and I look forward to them imploding in spectacular fashion in the playoffs. That is an absolute given. Zero chance at a Super Bowl. Zero. I wonder if A-Rod can top his game-losing drop-kick from last year??? And right after missing a WIDE OPEN sure touchdown.

    Six straight losses? Not completely out of the realm of the possibility, but it would have taken a 2-12 season to get Lovie fired.

    Lovie has a year left on his contract, and they weren’t going to fire him and hire a second coach in the face of a 2011 work stoppage.

I liked Chilly as a person, saw the piece where he was overseas doing something with our troops and they suprised him and he got to see his son who is serving in Afghanistan.   122. The Wilf’s gave him free reign to build the largest coaching staff in the league. They gave him free reign to get a unlimited free agents and top talent. Only Childress could take that gift and turn it into chaos.

    Hopefully they scrap that “west coast” offense and build one that fits our talent…Rice, Peterson, Harvin, etc. They also need to scrap that zone blocking scheme and let those big guys up front get back to road grading.

  127. @jpmelon and the others concerning the Rooney Rule. That rule does not apply to interim hires, mainly because there’s not time to conduct a thorough search in mid-season. After the season the team would need to follow satisfy rules before hiring a permanent head coach.

  129. Now that Childress is gone, I no longer want to hear a Vikings coach or player talk about an individuals play on national TV. If the coach does not like what he sees on the field he should pull that player aside and coach him, not publicly humiliate him on national TV. Showing the game tape of all the mistakes made during the game is humiliating enough for a competitive player. I hope the new coach Frazier will be hard on bad decision making and give the players good guidance in order to prevent the same play from showing in the following week’s game tape. Also, if a player is unable to participate in practice he should not be able to start in the next game; it is obvious that the team is lacking continuity on both sides of the ball.

  130. They need to bench Favre and start Jackson. They need to find out if he can be a future star. Jackson hasn’t performed well in the past, but that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t learned a few things since then. There have been plenty of late blooming QBs through the history of the NFL.

    Favre is probably done at the end of this year anyway. There is no upside for the Vikings to have Favre playing now.

    So you hope the Pack have a tough schedule next year? As I see it there’s three 8-2 teams this year and the Packers play all three of them on the road…thus far they’re 1-0 against them. They also beat Philly on the road already this year. Seems to me they already have a pretty tough schedule and yet they’d still one of the favorites with 10 players and 5 starters on IR. Yet unlike the Queens they make no excuses, they just go out there and play hard…something the Queens know nothing about.

  137. I think the wrong person got showed the door in Minnesota. Favre should have been sent packing once the Vikings had lost 4 games. It was appearant at the beginning of the season that Favre did not want to be there and it has showed in his play. The Vikings had better hope and I should say PRAY that T-Jack will accept an apology from the Wilf and re-sign or else it’s going to be a loooooooooooooooooong time before the Vikings are even considered a competitive team again.

    Wrong. Mangini tried to “coach” Farve on his turnovers within the confines of team meetings and Favre chafed at that. Didn’t work. So the best thing to do to a diva with an enormous ego and entitlement complex like Favre is to publicly humiliate him. It’s nothing less than Favre deserves.

I might add that your starting QB is also on track to break his all time single-season INT total, which is doing nothing but ensuring your team has an uphill battle to try and win every week.

If they had spent the bye week the right way, say on a cruise ship or a love boat. I think that would have built the unity needed to be a 8-8 team instead of a 5 win team.

Jeff has disappeared, too 🙁 and so have some of the other Vike/Pack regulars. I’m still surprised they’d ban guys as soon as the switch was made without giving them a chance to play nice. Didn’t realize majik was that big a problem.
