Bills’ Stevie Johnson fined $5,000 for TD celebration

Bills receiver Stevie Johnson lifted up his jersey to reveal a Joker-themed message on his undershirt after scoring a touchdown on Sunday, and now he’s paying for it.

The NFL fined Johnson $5,000.

Johnson wrote “Why so Serious?” on his white shirt, which Joker says in The Dark Knight. He said he decided to do it because the Bills were playing the Bengals, whose starting receivers, Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco, have referred to themselves as Batman and Robin.

Yeah, I got in trouble,” Johnson said of the fine. “I don’t regret it.”

Johnson was surprised the league disciplined him for what he called “a fun gesture.” But he added that it won’t happen again.

“I’m not trying to get any more fines,” he said. “I want to keep my money.”

With the $5,000 fine from Johnson coming down the same day as a $5,000 fine for Eagles guard Todd Herremans, the league has essentially said that writing a message on your shirt is exactly as bad as taking a cheap shot to an opponent’s knees.

  1. That’s jacked up – I agree head shots should be the most heavily fined, but no way should SJ be out the same $5K as Herremans. They should have fined TH $50K – $25K for each low hit.

    Nice…

  3. Do you get fined every time you lift up the shirt – I know he did it only once – But he scored 3 Td’s so if he did it every time I wonder if it would have been more.

Also, do they take the money out of your pay check directly? What happens if you just dont pay it…..EVER?

Cant the players work these silly fines out in the new CBA??

If not now, they will never have the power to make it legal to once again properly celebrate in the endzone.

  4. Everyone knew as soon as they saw it, that GODell was going to levy a fine. Perhaps this Joker(pun intended) should have written on his T-Shirt “Why am I so Stupid?” Just another example of the “look at me” mentality of professional atheltes. You’re a professional, act like one….

  5. Todd Herremans should have been fined triple of what Steve Johnson was fined… There goes the NFL doing something completely unfair again. If you ask me, the fines should be based on a percentage of what you earn yearly. That way the guy making 12 million doesn’t get the same fine as the guy making $500,000 a year.

  6. The NFL is like the government, they take the safest stance when it comes to protecting their perception. 5K for a t-shirt is a warning to all others not to escalate. Who knows what the next guy might write. (Although, what could be worse than Roddy White’s ‘Free Mike Vick’ statement) Hitting a D Lineman illegally is barely noticed in the game by the fans and certainly doesn’t hurt the performance of the God All Mighty Offense, so 5K for a first time offender is right in line with their theme. Head to head hits will get front page press these days, so the NFL spin machine feels the need to fine big in those cases. Understandable but patently unfair in my opinion. I know Florio loves to preach from his soapbox on this topic, and I see the need for points of view like his, but I think the NFL is overreacting in their response to the concussion issue in order to protect their public perception.

Technically it would be easy to just respond by saying “Why so serious?”

Honestly, hes a young kid trying to have fun in something he’s passionate about. If you seriously can look at that situation and only see a “look at me” attitude, then your taking yourself and life far too seriously.

Learn to revel in life a little….and hell I’ll do it….

    Why so freaking serious?

Let’s see, the Bills were at 1-8 entering this game, but that doesn’t matter to the professional entertainer. Making sure you get face time by writing on a t-shirt like some high schooler is far more important.

NFL players are entertainers within the game of football. What SJ did was not part of the entertainment. It’s a clown and selfish act that belongs to a show like the NBA.

  12. Does this guy like to be called “Stevie”?

I’m not picking on MDS here either, I’m just curious. I’ve heard a few commentators calling him “Stevie” before, but it sounds weird.

  13. This is ludicrous! With the type of year they are having and they way they lifted themselves off of the mat against the Bungles, he should have been PAID an extra $5 large for that.

“You wanna know how I got these scars?”

  14. The player was trying to send a message to the NFL that we the fans can all understand. But the NFL is so self important that it can’t tolerate any criticism hence the fine. Goodell’s new clothes.

    Fire Goodell.

  15. the NO FUN LEAGUE strikes again … the fact that THAT GESTURE was the same as Todd Herrimans going at someones knees clueless this Comissioner is

i understand what you’re saying, but if that were true then there would be NO press conferences, NO reality shows covering teams/players etc… everything is part of the entertainment when it comes to football and the TD celebration is no exception

  17. Sooooo….jumping into the bleachers after you score, moshing with the fans in the front row bleachers, delaying the game up to 2 mins, is ok. But this deems a $5,000 fine? Right.

    RUCK FOGER

  18. @marvsleezy

I’m pretty sure the fine comes directly out of their paycheck.

However, now I’m curious about the policy because I wonder how they collected the $500,000 from Belichick when he was caught cheating. If he gets weekly paychecks, they’d have to collect the fine over the course of a few weeks.

  19. I say they should make excessive celebration be penalized and fined even, depending on the celebration. To make some quick points, exactly, the Bills have had a bad year, but why not have fun. It’s a game and yes they are entertainers. I think as long as it’s nothing too excessive or truly unsportmanslike, then celebrations should be allowed. No point in taking the fun out of the game anymore than they already have. And I agree, it’s okay to make illegal hits but to have a simple sentence on a shirt, is worth the same price. Ridiculous.
