Shortly after the NFL announced that the Broncos franchise and head coach Josh McDaniels had each been fined $50,000 for a videotaping infraction, both the team and the coach issued apologies.

I apologize for not promptly reporting the improper conduct of our video director before our game against the 49ers in London,” McDaniels said. “The actions of this individual are in no way representative of the values and integrity held by myself, our players and coaches, and the entire Denver Broncos organization.”

The team’s official statement did not mention former director of video operations Steve Scarnecchia by name, but it did make clear that the team believes Scarnecchia acted alone in taping the 49ers’ walk-through practice last month, even as it acknowledged that McDaniels should have reported Scarnecchia’s infraction immediately.

“The Denver Broncos and I, as the Owner, believe in the integrity of the National Football League and fair competition and do not, in any way, condone this type of behavior,” Broncos President and CEO Pat Bowlen said. “The fact that an employee of the Denver Broncos would take such action is personally disappointing to me. I apologize to all affected by this incident. This employee is no longer with the organization.”
