Don’t expect Brad Smith back with the Jets in 2011

The Jets would love to re-sign both Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards in the offseason. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the chances of bringing back a versatile crowd favorite is less likely.

“Deep down, the Jets and people around the league know that they have very little chance of re-signing wide receiver Brad Smith,” Schefter writes.

The thinking here is that Smith will get a big offer in free agency, and the Jets won’t be inclined to match it. Both ideas are surprising.

Smith is a very valuable role player and we’re not sure why the Jets wouldn’t try to keep him. But has he shown enough as a receiver to get a big offer elsewhere?

Someone other than Schefter seems very confident it will happen.
