Broncos “still finalizing” interim head coach

The timing of Josh McDaniels’ firing comes as a shock to many, including Broncos players and probably McDaniels himself.

According to team spokesman Patrick Smyth via Mike Klis of the Denver Post, McDaniels was told of the decision around 4:10 local time.  The locker room access to players had only ended 20 minutes prior and the players had no idea.

At this point, there is no interim head coach.  The most mentioned candidate seems to be secondary coach Ed Donatell, but there won’t be an official announcement from the team until Tuesday.  (The news could leak out more tonight.)

The interim coach is secondary news anyhow.  Dallas and Minnesota’s interim head coaches may have a chance to stick around in 2011, but it’s a near certainty that Denver’s next head coach will come from outside the building.

UPDATE: It’s Eric Studesville.
