Cold shoulder to Shanahan gets Haynesworth suspended

The Shanahan-Haynesworth feud officially has gone to the next level.

The Redskins have announced that Haynesworth has been suspended four games for conduct detrimental to the team.  It’s the maximum penalty that a club can impose under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

“Despite the club’s numerous attempts to persuade Albert Haynesworth to abide by the terms of his contract, he has repeatedly refused to cooperate with our coaching staff in a variety of ways over an extended period of time,” coach Mike Shanahan said in a team-issued release.  “Among other things, he has consistently indicated to our defensive coaches that he refuses to play in our base defense or on first-down or second-down nickel situations.  He has also refused to follow the instructions of our coaches both during weekly practices and during actual games as well.

“Yesterday, when Albert was at Redskin Park, he told our General Manager Bruce Allen that he [Haynesworth] would no longer speak with me,” Shanahan said.  “Although suspending any player is not a decision that a head coach enters into lightly, I believe the situation has reached the point where the club clearly has no alternative.”

The alternative would be to cut him, but cutting him would let him land with a new team, with no compensation to the Redskins.  Look for the ‘Skins to trade him for whatever they can get in the offseason.

As to the question of whether the suspension allows the Redskins to recover signing bonus money from Haynesworth, it doesn’t.  Under the current labor deal, a player may be forced to pay back money only if he deliberately holds out or if he retires.

As to the suspension, Haynesworth will have a right to challenge it via arbitration.  The outcome will hinge on the evidence that the Redskins can produce of past behavior and warnings issued because of it, like the Eagles were able to do five years ago with Terrell Owens.

  1. Other than actually taking up space on the bench, what is the difference between “holding out” and refusing to do what the coaches tell him to do…on the practice field and in game situations? Haynesworth is a turd. He deserves to be blackballed out of football

  2. clap, clap, clap. Well done coach Shanahan (and I am not a Redskins fan at all, obviously).

That organization needs an exterminator, and the biggest rat just got trapped.

You don’t win with guys that don’t care and don’t put the team first.

  3. It’s about time. People in the workforce who decided to wait on/sell to/ approach, etc., every third customer only and to ignore their firm’s directives and policies would have been shown the door also….unless employed by the fed gov or backed by a teacher’s union…hard as hell to fire a rotten employee in those jobs…and I’m a teacher! Bye, bye, Fat Albert, we hardly knew ye…and that’s a good thing. Oh, and thanks to Phillip Daniels for speaking his mind.

  4. Since Shanahan is a known liar he should have to submit to amliar detector test when interviewed. It was good enough for a player right?

  5. It’s a whole lot more then a cold shoulder. . . . Dude has been a lazy and brat since Shanahan took over.

  6. Haynesworth is like T.O., Randy Moss and a few others. Talented? YES! but not worth the trouble in a TEAM GAME like football. I’d kick his fat ass to the curb.

  7. Finally the Skins grow a pair and get this fool away from the real team. Good luck to whatever desperate team takes this sad sack next season.

  8. Why would anyone trade for him? Skins picked him up as a free agent, they dont deserve anything for him.

Plus, you would take on that stupid contract in a trade. I think the Redskins will end up cutting him, as no one will trade for such a nut case.

Money is on Shanahan getting fired by Danny.

I will bet you any amount of money that Shanahan does not get fired after one season. If he’s below .500 next year, it may be a different story.

Why would anyone trade for him?

Um, so you don’t have to compete with every other team on the open free agent market for him? It absolutely makes a sense for a team in need to offer up a 5th or 6th rounder in order to get Haynesworth and not just have to offer him the most of any other team trying to get him via free agency.

Skins picked him up as a free agent, they dont deserve anything for him.

What? Lots of teams have traded players acquired via free agency!

  10. biggest FA bust in the history of the NFL. wow…they are setting all sorts of bad records this year. The Eagles game set all time negative records too.

Blow it up and start over again…..LMAO.

HAIL SUCKAS!!!! another 20 yrs finishing last.

  11. gotta love the Haynesworth haters, and the “Shanahan” lovers…….hate him all you want I would love to have him our our team, and I would give a 7th rd pick today….no problem…only problem is there is no football in 2011

  12. Shanadick will win the battle, but Hanyesworth will win the war! Shanadick to the unemployment line………..

  13. I think the skins should sign Jemarcus Russell to take Haynesworth’s place…they weigh the same and are just as stupid and lazy.

  14. The Raiders would love to have him, I’m sure that Davis would turn him around. He would fit right in to that bunch of misfits and idiots just find.

  15. why would u pay a guy like that and then switch away from tthe defense that maximizes his talent the most????? thats like getting peytom manning and deciding to be a smashmout offense. shanahan has shown his jerk tendencies in the past and recently, not convinced haynesworth is so much the problem like they are portraying it.

Not this year, Sparky. Your Cowboys have already earned that honor.

  17. Way to man-up shanahan!!

Hopefully the organization is smart enough to keep him around. Hey if not I hear that Wade Phillips is looking for work.. He’s a pushover if that’s what they’re in the market for.

  18. The Redskins will never learn. They continue to give large sums of money to players who don’t do anything for them. Someone should tell Dan Snyder to stick with a coach for more than a year and allow them to actually implement a system, and draft the players who can play in it. Going out year after year and buying the biggest free agent isn’t and hasn’t worked. Burn it down and start from scratch, that’s better than what you’ve got now.

  19. Haynesworth is, and has been, nothing more than a dirtbag malcontent cut out of the same cookie cutter mold as Moss, Owens and the likes. They have had the worlds riches handed to them on a silver platter, yet can not perform the simple task of acting in a reasonable manner and doing the job that were paid to do, and accepted the money to do. What in the hell makes jerks like that tick and why in the hell are the people who hire them that stupid. Release Haynesworth now and good riddance.

  20. Boysrollpt1.
You do realize that our beloved cowboys are last place don’t you. I apologize for ignorance cowboy fans. We’re not all this way.

  21. to all the htrs….we are playing the best ball in the nfl currently and will soon surpass this joke of an org in the standings. Our problem was obviously coaching and JJ saw it was time to cut our problem.

Your org will keep shanarat and co around to flounder for many yrs finishing last. Look at the performances you have had this yr..embarassing.

    Hail all ye SUCKAS!!!!!!

  22. Why is everyone so happy? You love this crap team of “good guys” and caoches here now? Yeah take the only guy that can make a difference on the line and mess with him all year to show whos boss. bunch of idiot fans dont care the team flat out sucks jumping up and down laughing like idiots cause they suspend one of they best players

    22 Million Dollars

  24. Shanahan handled this situation terribly from the beginning, but so did Big Al.

At some point though, you do have to realize who the boss is. You can try to go to war with your boss, but how likely is it that you will win? Al never figured this out.

Then again, what did you expect from a malcontent that everyone questioned his motivation after getting paid so much money.

You get what you paid for.

  25. Why is this dope boysroll always commenting on Redskins articles? Always idiotically talking trash and speaking nonsense about his last place team and how bad the Redskins are. Why don’t you shut up and worry about your own team and FYI the Cowgirls have won fewer playoff games then the ‘Skins this past decade so, do us all a favor and SHUT UP!

  26. It is still all Rat Face’s fault. The Redskin defence was a top tier defence last year. Instead of trying to fix their poor excuse of an offence he decided to overhaul the defence into a 3-4. Why would Haynesworth want to switch and play that when they were dominant last year with what they had.

  27. biggest FA bust in the history of the NFL was at my dumpster out back of the 7eleven on sunset hills yesterday. after i begged haynesworth for his autograph he busted all over my tonsils. wow…was that tasty! he set all sorts of bad records washing my throat.
    I’M 7’12”, 437 1/2 LBS…..LMAO.

    I ALSO SUCKASS!!!!

  28. I shiver to think that my Buccaneers actually offered this fat turd more money and he chose the Foreskins. I thank you profusely, chubby. Now we have Gerald McCoy.

  29. Shanahan & Haynesworth are both guilty of being children. Shanny started it by failing Fat Al’s conditioning test over & over. He made his point failing him once, then kept on trying to embarrass him. It blew up in his face & turned Haynesworth into a disgruntled non interested player. Off season workouts were not required so Al skipped them & Shanny acted like a scorned lover & ruined his relationship with Haynesworth. & Fat Al is just a selfish pig. Two peas in a pod.

Shanahan has reverted to his coaching with the Raiders & last couple of years with the Broncos.

  30. That photo of Shanny is priceless! It’s a mixture of ugly and completely confused. He did great with Elway, but…

I supported him through the beginning of this fiasco in the offseason, but it’s getting to the point now where one has to wonder if he really has any power in DC. Snyder must be vetoing any attempt at cutting this guy, because it only makes Shanny look more and more Childress-ish as each day passes.

You Raider fans are just lucky your team never had to deal with fat and overpriced lazy players. Oh wait….

  32. if “under the current labor deal, a player may be forced to pay back money only if he deliberately holds out or if he retires” then the deal should be amended next time to add verbage about refusal to comply with the wishes of team management. That just seems to be unacceptable behavior, especially at the salary levels involved. I hope that they’ve been documenting all of the stuff that’s been alleged, if it’s indeed true.

  33. Shanahan is a jerk, but he did right with Haynesworth, who is an over-rated and over-priced joke of a football player. If you don’t conform, you don’t play! He’s a poison on the team, and any team that trades for him, if it comes to that, is simply asking for a slide downhill. This is typical nowadays for sports. Dump all these losers and grab someone who wants to play. Average is better than a highlight ONCE in awhile.

I’m glad you decided to come out of the closet. I’m sure you and Tony Romo will be very happy together.
