As Elway prepares to join Broncos, other teams nod and smile

The worst-kept secret in NFL circles is that Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway will be returning to the Broncos.  Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that it will happen by the end of the season.

Issues to be resolved remain title, salary, and responsibilities.  (In other words, “everything.”)  Schefter reports that Elway will have a “direct role” in the hiring of the team’s next head coach.  Also, Schefter says that G.M. Brian Xanders won’t be retained in that role, but that he could remain in some other capacity.

Meanwhile, a buzz is emerging in league circles regarding the possibility that Elway will waltz into the Broncos front office, Matt Millen-style, and potentially run a team without the experience or, possibly, the skill to do so.

“Please let the Elway rumor be true!” an executive with another AFC team told us via text message earlier this week.

Elway’s potential impact will depend on his responsibilities — and on whether he’s willing to acknowledge the limits of his abilities and to designate accordingly to folks who know what needs to be done.

  1. Elway’s middle name is “Matt Millen”…..I predict he lasts no more than three seasons in Denver. That or a week, ala Marino in Miami who exited after realizing the job was more than full-time.

  2. Even in Cleveland, we didn’t elevate Bernie Kosar to do this (thank God), even though there are plenty of Bernie fans who cried for it.

  3. Somehow I doubt your other AFC team exec source exists. I think you just want to perpetuate your Elway bashing, but you have no credibility, so you just invented some cred. However, on the off chance the source does actually exist and did actually say that… be careful what you wish for, slick!

  4. Elway owning car dealerships pales in cmparison to running an NFL team. I just hope he doesn’t ruin his reputation the way Matt, Lions killer, Millen did! I wish him luck but I’m doubting it.

  5. Didn’t he own an arena team that won a championship? And wasn’t his dad a pro scout for many many years? Yea I’m sure he won’t know what he’s doing.

My father was a surgeon. Come on over my house and I’ll operate on you.

  7. After the catastrophic nightmare that was Josh McDaniels, Bowlen needs a major, positive PR move. Elway is that PR move to get the tatooed and toothless fan base feeling good about things again. He’ll then bring in a “real football guy” to make the moves that matter. Bowlen just fired a guy who had no idea what he was doing, so why would he hire another one right away?

  8. The only way this would be good is to make broncos fans feel good about themselves with having elway having something to do with the team again

  9. Elway believes he can be as successful in football as he was in his other business enterprises.

“Hell”, said John, “you just have to attach my name to them and they’re gold”, referring to the John Elway Steakhouses, John Elway Lincoln-Mercury, John Elway Nissan, etc. “Tell the truth, I don’t even know where the damn things are located, I just collect the checks each month. So, I expect when we rename the team John Elway’s Broncos, all the problems should be solved.”.

This analogy is only accurate if you were a Dr. and your dad was in fact a surgeon. My guess is that you are not the john Elway of Dr.s and your dad wasn’t the Jack Sr. of surgeons. But through the wonders of medicine you’ve managed to talk out of your ass on this one and construct a faulty analogy. Nice work.

The actual definition of his title has yet to be determined and already folks are declaring that he’d be a failure at whatever that position might be. Elway needs to bring more to the Broncos than a keen eye on talent. He needs to sell tickets, improve the city’s belief in the team, and help craft a plan to get us back to winning. He’s not going to be an architect, but a significant planner of that vision.

Some perspective people. Try it out.

I guess winning a championship and building an organization as a part owner, wouldn’t help him here in the exact same business according the guy who’s dad was a surgeon. 😉

  13. Did Millen, or Kosar or Jim Kelly go to Stanford, run successful businesses, own a successful arena league team, or do anything other than be an icon in their local area?

I’m not a Broncos fan, as a matter of fact I can’t stand them. But, I would never sell Elway short. Sure, he’s no Josh McDaniels, but maybe he’ll overcome the short resume and do a good job.

  14. HEY FLORIO REMEMBER THIS! Just so people who might have forgotten know, Florio is a closet Raider fan. It’s just they have been so bad for so long he doesn’t display it.

he’s hated the Broncos since before he made it big with NBC. Yes we all remember the smack talk back in the day.

He’s a Bronco hater and was pissed to see them win it all. Not only that but the whole league was wrong. Elway is the best GM in the league right now.
