Seahawks receiver Mike Williams doesn’t believe he’s the NFL’s comeback player of the year, an astute observation since Mike Vick will be running away with it like Dan Connolly returning a kickoff.
But Vick isn’t as humble when it comes to another fairly major award.
A reporter asked Vick to cast a hypothetical vote after practice on Friday for league MVP.
“You put me on the spot,” Vick said, per the Associated Press. “I would take . . . myself.”
Though Vick was smiling when he said it, he said it. And we wonder whether that show of something other than humility will hurt him in the eyes of the 50 folks who’ll soon be casting their vote for the award.
A prize Vick won’t be winning for the second straight year is the Ed Block Courage Award. The Eagles announced earlier today that their version of the team-by-team honor has gone to receiver Jason Avant.
Last year, in his first season with the Eagles, Vick received the Ed Block Courage Award, which is determined exclusively by a player vote. It was a controversial decision, given that Vick really didn’t add much to the on-field effort and that the only obstacles he overcame were self-imposed.
Frankly, we think Vick would have been much better choice for it this year. Despite being relegated to backup when the season began, he played his way into the starting job once Kevin Kolb was injured -- and Vick didn’t relinquish it after suffering a painful rib/chest injury of his own, which he overcame to become even better than he was before he was hurt. In the end, Vick has had the best year of his career.
This year’s MVP could be one of the closest ever, with Vick and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady currently the top two candidates. As pointed out in this week’s Friday 10-pack, the end result very well could be a tie.
