Fine, no suspension, coming for Brett Favre

The NFL will fine Brett Favre but not suspend him for sexually harassing Jenn Sterger when both worked for the Jets, according to multiple reports out this morning.

Both Jay Glazer of FOX and Adam Schefter of ESPN have reported that the discipline is coming. Schefter reported that it will come in the next 48 hours and will not include a suspension, while Glazer reported that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to fine Favre today or tomorrow but not suspend him.

Since we always enjoy pointing out a good media feud, we’ll also note that after Schefter and Glazer tweeted about Favre, NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora tweeted, “I’ve reported for a month Favre to get fined but not suspended for Sterger case, and decision announced by end of reg season. No news there.”

A minute later La Canfora tweeted, “So here is some actual news: The fine will not exceed $50,000, and could in fact be less.”

The lack of a suspension means that if Favre is medically cleared, he will play what everyone expects to be his final NFL game on Sunday in Detroit.

Is the league actually saying he “sexually harassed” her or is the fine for violating the personal conduct policy (tarnishing the shield with “junk mail”)? There is a big difference. I would think that if it had truly been sexual harassment, her lawyers would have filed a suit yesterday and they didn’t.

  2. Funny how this decision comes the very next day after Sterger fails tomeet the NJ deadline for filing her lawsuit. Now if she doesn’t like the punishment the league sets on Favre, she can’t threaten further redress in court.

Favre may finally done after this season anyway, but I can’t see how Goodell sits Roethlisberger for four weeks yet Favre gets only a fine. Any last vestige of integrity Roger Goodell may have had after Spygate II, Thighgate, and Rex the Swinger just disappeared with the decision to only fine Favre.

Worst Commissioner the league has ever had.

  3. I don’t think Glazer, La Canfora or Schefter reported anything newsworthy that the rest of us hadn’t already figured out long ago! For the three of them to quabble about a decision that even someone living under a rock knew was coming is ridiculous. What BF may or may not have did is between him and his wife. The facts as we know them (Sterger waiting 2 years to say anything, Sterger wanting money, the Jets organization never being inplicated or involved when they were the employer, Sterger’s “video library” of other celeb’s, etc. etc.) provide no basis for this being anything other than another “Tiger Woods” situation…….fit only for the tabloids. Hell a case could be made for Roger Goodell (Mrs. Goodell to NFL fans) being a “wuss” and to favoring certain NFL team owners with the wild and whacky decisions that he has made. I for one will be glad when this Sterger thing is no longer newsworthy to others as it hasn’t been newsworthy to me.

  4. The QB on the Vikings roster playing the best football is Joe Webb.

If Leslie Frazer starts Favre over Webb after what Webb did last night, than he doesn’t care about winning the game, just placating the team’s star.

  5. Total BS. If this was ANY other player they would have been suspended. Fining him 50K is a slap on the hand. Nice work comish!

  6. If there isnt a lawsuit no discipline should be taken at all..simple as that.and if there was i dont blame Brett.have you seen pics of Sterger??! she is pretty f/n hot!!

  7. The appropriate discipline for Brett would be to have Sterger spank Favre’s bare butt with some leather whips and so forth, documenting the entire procedure with photos, and then texting those to members of the media. Sadly Goodell doesn’t have the balls to make it happen.

  8. Is there anyone that knows what the NFL does with all this money they are stealing from the players that put their health on the line? I know they say it goes to charity, but please. How about one of you PFT bloggers do some investigating? Maybe in the offseason? Also, how about a total for all money players were fined this season. My guess it is in the 2-3M$ range.

Also, did anyone really think that his Royal Hindass would ever really get disciplined by the NFL?

  9. I say reduce the fine to $40,000, about $10,000 per inch. Its bad enough that BrINT has to go through life with such a small pecker, now the whole world knows about it and his endorsement potential has been hit hard.

Its too bad the story came out this season. The Vikings would have surely gone to the Superbowl without this needless distraction.

  10. Finally, this can be done with!! What ever will we talk about next year (if there is even football next year).

  11. This allows the NFL to CYA by technically punishing him. His real punishment was having it dragged out all season.

  12. .
    where are the sterger pics?

why are they not fining her for participating?

give her a choice either pay a fine or give us pics!

  13. I’m soooo tires of Farve. Please just go away, for good this time. An for sterger, I guess it’s time to go do playboy, those tatas have to get you a payday somehow. I guess u are not getting anything out of old Brett.. Nice try tho.. Here is a thought find a honest job. An not the kind of job your used to. 😉

  14. The first sentence is messed up. The NFL obviously didn’t think there was sexual harrassment going on or they would have suspended Favre. The NFL fines players for everything, so that doesn’t really mean anything.

Explanation for the brain dead: Favre sent texts. Rapenstein fed college co-eds booze and sexually assaulted them. And he didn’t appeal his suspension either.

After the sparking performanceof Joe Webb last night, SHOULD Brett play in Detroit if cleared?
    =================================
He didn’t even put up a point in the first half and the Minnesota offense was just not that good yesterday. I saw a kid, who is a good athlete, but lacks the arm strength to be a legitimate starter at the NFL level. Maybe he can be a serviceable backup. If the Vikings and their fans think he is the answer, they are in deep trouble.

  17. Haven’t we all been harassed by Favruh too much at this point???

Go away old man and take your lapdog(Goodell) with you!

  18. there is the nfl rules and then there are the brett favre rules. i knew he would get away with nothing. yet big ben got the big weenie. way to go commish now take him out to dinner.

  19. HE just made $20 million this year, and they will fine him $50,000 or less? Wow.

Goodell is the worst commissioner in sports history. Ben was never convicted and there was no proof, yet a 4 game ban? WOW! This is ridiculous and Goodell should be fired and/or relieved of his duties asap. He is a communist leader of our favorite game, and is destroying it!

  20. Goodell heard everyone giving him crap because they knew Favre would retire and Goodell wouldn’t suspend him before the last game of the season.
So instead Goodell fines him a paltry sum to act like he did something. Roger is just like Daddy.
$5 says Goodell doesn’t make the Favre report public.

  21. Favre may finally done after this season anyway, but I can’t see how Goodell sits Roethlisberger for four weeks yet Favre gets only a fine.

Ummmm, Big Ben “allegedly” forced Little Ben into somewhere it shouldn’t have (ie: Raped a college co-ed). Brett just sent pictures of Little Brett. Besides, this happened two years ago and was only brought to light because of a Internet editor not Sterger herself. If she was truly offended I would thing this would have been brought to the league by Sterger a lot sooner.

  22. This was a no brainer, as many posters pointed out. I really don’t think he will come back…finally.

  23. Another fine example of Goodell’s hypocrisy. The man’s blatant double facedness knows no bounds.

He must think the fans are either blind, stupid or he really doesnt give a damn.

Kick that smug mug off the face of the NFL please!

  24. Please….please….please….start Favre, Coach Frazier.

I don’t know what I’d rather see more…Favre having a career day (and by that, I don’t mean records for fumbles, getting sacked, and INT’d) and reconsider his retirement to come back for another drama saga, or him getting slayed on the turf at Ford Field.

    Could go either way.

  25. Curiouser and curiouser. Apparently, only the hint of impropriety draws a fine. But then again, the commissioner did see the footage. This only makes the commissioner look indecisive and politically motivated. Apparently, Goodell doesn’t want to tarnish the image of a football legend.

    Fire Goodell.

  26. Goodell is the worst commissioner in sports history. Ben was never convicted and there was no proof, yet a 4 game ban? WOW! This is ridiculous and Goodell should be fired and/or relieved of his duties asap. He is a communist leader of our favorite game, and is destroying it!

Seriously? Ben was accused of RAPING someone on MULTIPLE different occasion. Brett Favre sent pictures to Sterger who most likely was reciprocating at the time. It’s not even close to being on the same level.

  27. mean13 says: Favre sent texts. Ben fed college girls booze and sexually assaulted them and didn’t appeal his suspension.

Favre admitted to sending texts, but we don’t know the content of those texts. I’m guessing you think his texts were harmless, but I wonder if your opinion would change if they were made public (just like Ben’s was made public)?

I’m guessing most of you guys think Favre’s comments went something like this: “hey I want to have sex.”

I’m not comparing the Favre situation to Ben at all, but I’m going to repeat the one comment many people have given with regards to Ben:

What if Sterger was your daughter and Favre was telling her he wanted to screw her in the locker room and sent her pictures of his you-know-what? What if he made comments about her body. Favre is a married man with kids and grandchildren. Are you telling me it would be okay for your daughter?

Ben didn’t appeal his suspension, but Favre isn’t really defending himself either. All he said is that he sent texts.

Before all of you jump down my throat, I agreed with the 4-game suspension. However, I also believe the league took their time with Favre hoping this would pass and they wouldn’t have to suspend him. They got their wish.

  28. Jason L is a lil bia. Always so quick to say I told you so and I’ve been saying this forever…..STFU.

But is nowhere to be seen or admit his error when he’s wrong.

  29. Way to go Brett. You proved that some men just don’t get it. Ya shoulda walked away from the game with some class a few years ago. But no, you thought you were so invincible. Ha Ha. How bout that losing season Brett? How bout that not getting any lovin from Deanna cuz you acted inappropriately with a female Jets employee. Ha Ha. What goes around comes around pal. I have a policy i follow called the, “I will never feel sorry for a millionaire policy”. Now pay your fine cuz you were a bad boy. You may go in the Hall of Fame someday. But right now we all just want you to go away and shut up and keep your hands and sexting to your beautiful wife. And please, just watch football on TV. Please don’t bore us with your retirement antics anymore. Ha Ha. Geaux Saints!

  30. Wow. I didn’t know Favres johnson was stumpy. I never saw the alleged photographs. This is really cool news. I mean, a mans johnson is his johnson. Thats important. And now we learn that Mr football super bowl winner future hall of famer still has his infant johnson. No wonder he’s having all these life decision dilimas. Because the one true REAL dilima in his life is permanent, he has a “not big” johnson. I rather be me. I’m not a football player and i ain’t goin to no stinkng hall of fame and i ain’t rich but, i got a big ole growed up man Johnson! And i’ll take that over anything brett favre ever had or is ever gonna have. Ha Ha. Why would he send the picture to a hottie proving right off the bat he ain’t even a REAL man. Too Funny. Geaux Saints!

  31. All those who would like to see Brit Far go away please say Yea. All those opposed please say nay. The nays win. End of stories about Big Brett and Little Brett. Only a complete moron or a senile old man would ask this guy if he wants to play next year for his team. Any word from Al Davis?

Yeah but while Ben was only accused of sexual assault, all the evidence showed that he actually most likely didn’t, whereas Sterger actually had Favre’s dong shots on a phone cam.

  33. I would almost GUARANTEE there will be no wording in the announcement of the fine such as Sexually harassed. Most likely, he will be fined for violating the Personal Conduct Policy.

The Personal Conduct Policy is the ONLY thing he is guilty of.

    @richm2256

Biggest difference between Favre and Benji is that it was multiple times Benji had been caught. Favre only did this once (that we know of)

  34. I want Sterger fined for harassment because she keeps sending me pics of herself via television directly into my living room. she continually shows images of herself spilling outta clothes that are way too small for her and I feel threatened.

won’t the NFL commissioner do something about this hootchie?

  35. suspending BF for his last game would’ve cost him a million dollar game check, right? too steep for this high school stuff, and they want him to play, if he can. he IS a big deal in nfl history

webb and frazier really helped themselves out last night, big time! frazier will get a HC job, probably with the vikings, and webb will for sure get more respect and opportunities

now hit the snooze button, back to sleep

  36. PROOF of sexual harrassment of a league employee = nominal fine.

No proof, no charges, mere unfounded accusations of rape = 6 game suspension.

How in the world can anyone find this fair and balanced punishment? Goodell and his conduct policy is the biggest farce in the history of pro sports. (since the spygate cover-up at least)

You obviously didn’t see the 2 throws to Harvin.
The last one split 2 defenders on a laser line.
Keep in mind, this was his 1st start and he outperformed an MVP contender.
Let me guess, you are either an Eagle or Packer fan. Here’s a clue, JimmySee is a Packer fan and he admits to seeing the talent. Idiot.

Obviously this dude has 1st hand evidence of what Favre’s “dong” looks like. You don’t know that is him or not, you turd.

  38. Just because the evidence overwhelmingly show that no sexual harrassment took place doesn’t mean Goodell shouldn’t suspend him anyways. This shows favoritism.

Favre and Rex Ryan should be suspended because embarrassing photos/video of them was put on the internet. Plain and simple.

The fact that Sterger’s evidence wasn’t even enough to attempt a lawsuit probably tells you about how much harrassment takes place, especially considering that the woman gets the benefit of the doubt in these situations.

Guy flirting with team employee. Girl flirts back. Girl’s career in NFL broadcasting ends. Within weeks photos she has of Favre are sold to Deadspin and she’s in the news looking for a payday. Story gets overblown because it is Favre.

  39. On another note, does anybody on ESPN (or any other network) speak more words without saying a damn thing than Schefter? “James Harrison is not going to change his style because of the fines”. WOW!! You really are the NFL Insider, man! He says NOTHING when he is on. NOTHING. Worthless. Don’t know about Glazer or the other guy.

Oh yeah about Favre. She got nothing and deserved nothing. He’s done after next week. Hopefully that’s it, but I’m not optimistic.

How do you suspend someone who is never going to play again anyway??!!

Anyone mad that he didn’t get suspended is an idiot.
    ————————————————–
If you don’t see what happened here, you sir are the idiot.

Goodell waited until the last possible moment to pass punishment. He easily could have suspended him early on in the season, but didn’t want to wreck their season or streak. He couldn’t care less about the Steelers, as always, and targeted Ben and they still get a top seed.

But yeah it would be dumb to suspend him now, 2 months ago it should have been done… Idiot.
