The Cowboys won’t be granting a possible sham interview to one minority candidate before making the hiring of coach Jason Garrett official.
They’ll be granting two possible sham interviews.
In addition to receivers coach Ray Sherman, who by all rights should be the next offensive coordinator in Dallas if he’s regarded as a head-coaching candidate, the Cowboys will interview Dolphins assistant head coach Todd Bowles, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Bowles worked for the Cowboys from 2005 through 2007, joining the Dolphins in 2008.
That said, we’re far less uncomfortable with owner Jerry Jones’ decision to interview Bowles than with the decision to interview Sherman. As a current member of the Dallas coaching staff who has generated no buzz as a head-coaching candidate, Sherman would have no reason to decline the invitation to interview, if he hopes to remain employed. Bowles, on the other hand, can accept the interview and gain experience and potentially become an A-list head-coaching candidate at some point in the future.
