Reid tells McDermott his predecessor’s shadow was “too large”

Just when some had begun to forget the stark say-one-thing-do-another example that Eagles coach Andy Reid provided when he insisted that Kevin Kolb would remain the starting quarterback of the Eagles two days before giving the job to Mike Vick, Reid pulled an identical maneuver this week.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, who broke the news on Saturday night that Reid had fired defensive coordinator Sean McDermott after two years on the job, mentioned during Sunday NFL Countdown that Reid publicly had said this week that McDermott will return.

In the end, Reid decided that, per Mort, that the shadow created by McDermott’s predecessor, Jim Johnson, was “too large in a place like Philly.”

In other words, the man who for years was able to thicken his skin and ignore the chatter is no longer willing to ignore the chatter. Or maybe it was a convenient excuse.

Either way, Reid continues to prove that he can never be taken at his word.

Mort says McDermott could join John Fox in Denver or Ron Rivera in Carolina. ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned that former Falcons and Seahawks coach Jim Mora could be a candidate to replace McDermott.
