Vince Young says he’s “elite”, plans to start in 2011

The Tennessee Titans have decided to cut the cord on quarterback Vince Young after five NFL season.  Despite being spurned by the Titans, Young remains confident that, in his next destination, he’ll be embraced as a starting quarterback.

“Definitely I am a starting quarterback, an elite quarterback in the NFL,” Young tells Marcellus Wiley of ESPN.  “I want to go ahead and start.  But like it always is, the coaches have the last word.”

For 2011, the labor dispute will influence the extent to which Young will be able to win the starting job.  If the NFL imposes a lockout that wipes out the offseason program and training camp, Young will have to learn a new offense on the fly.

That said, there aren’t 32 quarterbacks in the NFL who are better than Young.  Though at times he may be a little brash for his own good, Young is partially right — he has the skills to still be a starter.  The bigger challenge will be dealing with adversity that will inevitably come once he’s a starter in his next NFL city.

Until he can do that, he’ll never be an “elite” quarterback.

  1. “Definitely I am a starting quarterback, an elite quarterback in the NFL,” Young tells Marcellus Wiley of ESPN.

    ******************

Young shouldn’t smoke that stuff if it affects him like that.

  2. Yeah, he’s elite, if “elite” means “immature”, “self-entitled” and “over rated”.

In that case, he beyond elite!

  3. Vince is still one of the best at the position and has done a lot with a lot less than the other supposedly “elite” quarterbacks. Some team will be getting the real deal when he lands in town.

  4. Minnesota? He’ll have the same kind of weapons their that helped him win games in Tennessee.

  5. My guess…a place like Minnesota with Leslie Frazier and his access to a guy like Tony Dungy would make an ideal landing spot for Vince Young…

  6. Not too sure about “elite”, unless you’re referring to being one of the best QB’s at being unable to read defenses. He could prolong a punctuated career by studying and paying attention more in game prep, but he chooses to rely on already diminishing athletic talent. He just doesn’t get it.

Which may be why he will be asking himself why other teams don’t “get” him ten weeks in to next season.

  7. I think his lack of intelligence is showing here. Does he REALLY know what it means to be “Elite.” It does not mean that you are only good on even-numbered years there slick…

  8. The 49ers will take him. Honestly, at this point it is down to him and Bush man (San Franciscans know who I’m talking about).

  9. Yeah he’s elite alright — An elite Moron — What a joke — I mean prove it in the class room and film room first — then the practice field — Then deal with just a whisper of adversity — Like maybe start out with some spilled milk or something and go from there — What an idiot!

  10. Vince young will always be ok. He has few elite moments in the NFL. He be always be an elite stain on the walls of society.

  11. e·lite   /ɪˈlit, eɪˈlit/
    [ih-leet, ey-leet]

    –noun
    1. ( often used with a plural verb ) Possessing great talent, coupled with zero work ethic and/or leadership ability

  12. Elite my ass. I’m not even sure if he is one of the top 32. Old Kerry Collins beat him out. Yeah he has some great skills, but you have to put up with his childish behavior. Good luck “Elite”.

  13. The Dolphins need a great QB and the Titans didn’t win without him so I think he is a really good QB and the Dolphins ought to wait for the Titans to cut him and then go out and sign him or trade Henne and a 5th round pick for him.

  14. Hey! I’m kind of a not-too-bright spoiled brat who cries when I don’t get my way too! Does that make me “Elite” also?

  15. Narcissistic Personality Disorder – according to the DSM-IV
Symptoms: The symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder revolve around a pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and sense of entitlement. Often individuals feel overly important and will exaggerate achievements and will accept, and often demand, praise and admiration despite worthy achievements. They may be overwhelmed with fantasies involving unlimited success, power, love, or beauty and feel that they can only be understood by others who are, like them, superior in some aspect of life.

There is a sense of entitlement, of being more deserving than others based solely on their superiority. These symptoms, however, are a result of an underlying sense of inferiority and are often seen as overcompensation. Because of this, they are often envious and even angry of others who have more, receive more respect or attention, or otherwise steal away the spotlight.

Somebody get this guy a shrink

  16. Adversity like a coach who is hell-bent on undermining him?

Yeah, that’s a tough one. Not many could deal with it.

  17. unknown fact is that vince youngs minor in college was the language “elvish”. and elite in that tongue actually means over rated, streaky, diva, and washed up already. so yes he elite…. wander if he will fair well in the black hole?

  18. It literally offends me as a football fan to hear Vince Young refer to himself as “an elite QB in the league” Its more offensive than him saying, “I enjoy punching babies after a victory”.

  19. Oh boy this is some low hanging fruit.

VY has a Million dollar arm and legs and a 10 cent head.

I agree there aren’t 32 QB’s better than VY but there may be 22 you’d rather have leading your team.

  20. Following up: VY shouldn’t just look for any old starting job. Find the right situation, even if it’s not a sure-fire starting position. Minnesota, for example, as long as they remember to hire a decent coordinator.

  21. VY might want to be schmoozing the Cards. That’s the best option I can see for him if he can learn the option. Got a couple good ones in Fitz, and Breaston.

  22. I believe the Miami Dolphins could use the skills that Vince Young has. However the Dolphins have passed up on Drew Brees and Matt Ryan. Why would they start now making intelligent talent acquisitions? Well one reason is that Parcells is not mentoring or making the decisions in Miami anymore. That is a positive direction for the Dolphins!

  23. this is a good job by young. he’s showing his future employers that he has matured into a leader for whatever team he lands on

in 5 years, he still has a false sense of entitlement. he will never be better than average starting quarterback who will occasionally make a great play

  24. This is the funniest thing I have heard in weeks! I hope he was joking, because he is a good backup, AT BEST. I cannot even fathom that he truly believes he is the same ballpark as a Brady/Manning/Brees/Rivers/Rodgers, or even a mediocre starter like the little Manning, McNabb, Sanchez… He’s not better than the 84 year old Kerry Collins!

  25. He gets a lot of crap, but I feel a lot of it is personal issues between him and Jeff Fisher, and neither could keep their cool.

He is still a decent starting QB with good stats that is young enough to be elite if he wipes the slate clean. However now he is not elite.

  26. Hahahahaha! Oh man, thank you for that, I needed it. I’m sure Eldon Wonderlic would have a few choice words on this subject.

  27. I guess this proves true the jokes that young has been hanging out at mack browns house watching texas highlights and listening to mack brown tell him he is canton bound……young is a joke what LITTLE intrest he had from any teams has gone down after hearing this clown open his mouth and dig himself into a deeper hole

  28. Poor guy, doesn’t even know what “elite” means. I don’t know what’s worse. That he knows what it means and thinks he’s as good as Brady, Manning, and Brees. Or that he doesn’t know what it means and just says it because his uncle’s cousin’s brother’s grandaddy’s cousin’s mama’s sister’s cousin told him to tell them reporters you elite, VY.

  29. The fact that VY says that he’s elite now tells me he still doesn’t have the level of maturity and sound judgement needed to start and be successful now.

  30. i wouldn’t say elite but arizona, seattle, san fran, minnesota, miami, jacksonville, Cincinnati, and carolina all could use a upgrade at QB and vy would be an upgrade

  31. Why would learning a new offense on the fly be a problem for Young? He’s never bothered to learn an offense before…

  32. He is elite . . .

    until someone boos him.

until he has to do work.

until you actually watch game film of him.

I mean, how else could you have 60+% wins and never have won anything.

  33. There aren’t 32 QBs better than VY in the NFL?

    1. Tom Brady
    2. Peyton Manning
    3. Ben Roethlisberger
    4. Drew Brees
    5. Phillip Rivers
    6. Aaron Rodgers
    7. Michael Vick
    8. Matt Ryan
    9. Joe Flacco
    10. Matt Schaub
    11. Josh Freeman
    12. Matt Cassel
    13. David Garrard
    14. Tony Romo
    15. Mark Sanchez
    16. Eli Manning
    17. Jay Cutler
    18. Kyle Orton
    19. Jason Campbell
    20. Carson Palmer
    21. Sam Bradford
    22. Donovan McNabb
    23. Chad Henne
    24. Matt Hasselbeck
    25. Jon Kitna
    26. Colt McCoy
    27. Kevin Kolb
    28. Shaun Hill
    29. Bruce Gradkowski
    30. Matt Stafford
    31. Ryan Fitzpatrick
    and last but not least….
    32. Kerry Collins!

I am sure there are some backups in the league that are better as well but you said 32.

  34. Vince has never been an elite quarterback. He has been an elite athlete and head case for a while now.

  35. Ok now that I have cleaned up the coffee that I sprayed on my laptop, let me say this – Vince, you are totally delusional….

Perhaps the in CFL or UFL you might be a good qb but in the NFL, it’s not going to happen…

  36. To Seattle where this ‘Elite’ QB can ride the bench, get some perspective, and learn form Hasselbeck and Carrol about being a QB. Then after about 10 games, maybe a year, he can start.

  37. Mr. Young needs to take a long hard look into a mirror and be honest with himself about his behavior as a person, not a quarterback. I don’t see anything elite about him right now.

  38. Correct me if I am wrong here but has an elite QB ever called themselves elite? I think someone needs to smack VY with some humility followed by a dose of reality. This guys attitude of self entitlement will never allow him to fully use his natural talents. Sad.

  39. Young just doesn’t get and likely never will. You have to be able to make more than one read to be an NFL quarterback, let alone a good one – never mind elite.

  40. ” an elite quarterback ”

    He was misquoted!

He really said “an ‘el-ite’ quarterback”

In spanish this translates to ‘the quarterback with no heart or spine’.

So he was spot on! He is ‘el-ite’!

  41. Give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they are changing the name of the UFL the the Elite Football league. Much like David Tyree a outstanding play in a big game doesn’t mean you are a great player.

    ========================

Did you just use the word “learn” in a post about Vince Young? If he has shown the capacity to”learn” anything at any point in his career, he wouldn’t be where he is now.

  43. “E” is for Entitlement, and the strong sense of it that he has…
“L” is for Lazy, because Lethargy is just too damn long a word…
“I” is for IQ, low…because if he can’t handle Lethargy, you know Intellectual Capacity isn’t an option…
“T” is for Tell me nothin’, ’cause you know you can’t (also, see: Tequila party, all-male shirtless)…
    “E” is for…damn, didn’t we already have an “E”?
uh, how about Ego? or maybe Everybody Take Off Your Shirts and Lets Drank Some Tequila…

    and that spells…oh crap, give me a minute…wait, I got it…ELITE!
(need to find a better word, maybe something with a bunch of “H”s so there can be some HOOK’EM HORNS in there…)

  44. He may have the skills of an elite QB. He’s just yet to demonstrate the work ethic of even a mediocre. Just because you were a hot-shot kid in college and have a few million in the bank doesn’t mean that eliteness will be handed to you on a silver platter. Get off your ass and work for it, Vince. As Fisher would say – Working hard: Its A Man Thing.

  45. The only thing young is elite in is screwing up time after time after time. Guy is a joke!! He will sign with another team and them screw up again . Mark it down it will happen!!

  46. Vince may be spelled E-G-O or H-E-A-D-C-A-S-E but you can’t argue with the numbers and as a starter he would fall into the “elite” range –

  47. I’d love have the mirrors that these egotistical slobs use. It must be great at distorting reality. Even the evil queen’s mirror in Snow White pales by comparison.

  48. What do you expect him to say…he’s interviewing publicly for his next job. All the people on here bashing him for saying that. How many of you have stretched the truth on your resume or in an interview. “Sure I can type…watch me hunt and peck with my 2 index fingers”.

Maybe if he goes to MN they can have Samurai Mike coach the QB’s too. That will keep him in check. Give Vince a 1-year contract like T.O. heavily weighted with incentives and see what he can give you. It’s worth a shot.

  49. He was truly amazing in college @ Texas and i would say he has the physical skills to play with the big boys but not the maturity.

    IOW – grow up.

  50. They forgot to add that this statement was taken at 2:30 am as he was leaving a club and being held up by 2 friends. The only thing he is “Elite” at is making excuses.

  51. I think Miami would be a great spot for Vince because Henne sucks and Vince could get a fresh start.

  52. It’s funny seeing you armchair quarterbacks swallow the ridiculous media reporting that VY was a quitter, headcase, etc. Do they spoon-feed that to you, or pour it directly down your throat?

  53. More like DELETE QB which is what the Titan’s have done. Elite ability for sure but the guy doesn’t get what it takes to be a top tier player.

  54. You didn’t post the next segment of the interview! Marcellus pointed at him and said, “Not elite,” in a teasing type of tone.

Young sat in the corner and refused to talk to anyone for the remainder of the interview. He hasn’t been seen since, and is reported to be suicidal.

  55. It’s a pity when you see someone squander an opportunity that so few people are afforded. There are not even 15 elite QBs starting in the entire NFL which gives you an idea of how rarified an atmosphere the NFL really is. Once upon a time, Vince Young could have been a decent QB, not elite, but in the McNabb class. But, he is also a psycho, which puts him in the Ryan Leaf class, and thus should never play in anything other than UFL or Arena football. Or, better yet, just go away and spend the rest of your life daydreaming about success you would have had if only someone would have given you a chance!

  56. You know, even Randy Poss has his defenders (Chris Carter anyone?). But NO one thinks VY is elite. No one anywhere.

  57. Teams aren’t going to learn their lesson and Cam Newton will get drafted a round or two higher than he should.

  58. He has great athletic ability but he is stupid…yes, i mean stupid, and emotionally unstable. The only way he could be elite is if the helmet speaker stays on and the OC tells him when and where to throw the ball as the plays develop.

  59. Somone is going to take chance on him and end up VERY Disappointed! He has all the physical tools and there will be a coach who will feel he can fix him, just don’t think it’s going to happen.

  60. This guy is so full of himself, mainly because a certain few in the brocast arena want to tell you he is a winner because of his wins. He needs to watch some film of the elite QB’s in this league.

  61. Funny, you say there aren’t 32 QB’s better at leading a team than Vince Young. First, it’s hard to tell because the weapons on Tennessee are completely different than in other places.

I actually believe there are a lot more than 32 QB’s in the league better than VY. That’s because I can easily say that at least a few teams in the NFL have more than one QB they’d rather have than him. I’m a friggin Lions fan, and I still would take Stanton, Hill and the oft hurt Stafford over him. Problem with Vince Young has never been talent. It’s his utter stupidity and immaturity. By his own words of, “I’m an elite QB in this league”, it’s obvious he still doesn’t get it. Talent in the NFL doesn’t make you a great QB, it’s the smarts to read a defense and the maturity to handle both the criticism and pressure. Passing the buck and blaming others does not make you elite.

  62. Everyone keeps saying VY is a winner, he’s not a winner, the Titans won all of those games with an elite (in the actual sense of the word, not some quasi-definition from VY) running game and a stout defense. This simpleton wouldn’t know elite if it smacked him in the face, probably because he’d be running the other way, just like he does from all adversity, on and off the field.

The only difference between VY and Jamarcus Russell is the teams they played for. Give Jamarcus a stable situation, rather than the mess that is the Raiders, and the running game and defensive improvements he would have gained going from Oakland to Tennessee and he’d probably even be better than VY, at least the kid can throw the ball!

  63. VY, your time is over. You are, however, in one elite category: QB busts. Right up there with Leaf, Russell, etc.

I’m shocked to see Vikings fans actually wanting VY. I would think that, after getting rid of one sub-performing diva QB you wouldn’t want to go right out and replace him with a younger version of the same model, with less credentials.

    —————————–

Look, I get it. You went to school in Austin – as did everyone in my family but me – so we both know it is a good school but how long is it going to take for you to come to reality?

While you were getting your EE degree, VY was trying hard to grasp the intricacies of middle school grammar. He is a spoiled child and will never be an elite qb in the NFL…

Feel free to use some mouthwash; it will help get that taste out of your mouth…
