If he had it to do all over again, Wes Welker wouldn’t try to turn a press conference into a stand-up comedy act.

Welker made a bunch of foot jokes at the expense of Jets coach Rex Ryan before the teams met in the playoffs, and Patriots coach Bill Belichick wasn’t amused, deciding to bench Welker for the Patriots’ first offensive series of the playoff game. Now Welker is saying he’s sorry.

“I’m not going to get into any details about it, but I don’t think it’s worth putting coach [Belichick] in that situation,” Welker told the Boston Herald. “So in a sense, I do regret it. . . . As much as you might want to get enticed into that stuff, at the end of the day, it’s just not worth it.”

Although Belichick had ordered his players not to respond to the relentless trash talk from the Jets, Welker says he just couldn’t help himself.

“It’s not always easy to keep a lid on it,” Welker said, “but at the same time, there’s a greater goal, and that’s winning the game and playing good football. That’s what matters. All that other stuff doesn’t matter at the end of the day.”

Asked if he’s glad the Jets aren’t in the Super Bowl, Welker said, “I think if you’re a Patriot fan, a little bit.”
