Dan Snyder wants writer who ripped him fired

In November, a writer named Dave McKenna wrote an article for the Washington City Paper headlined, “The Cranky Redskins Fan’s Guide to Dan Snyder: From A to Z (for Zorn), an encyclopedia of the owner’s many failings.”

Snyder was not amused.

The Washington Post reports that Snyder is now threatening legal action against the City Paper and is seeking McKenna’s dismissal.

So far, Snyder has not filed a lawsuit, but one of his lawyers confirmed that a lawsuit is being prepared. For its part, the City Paper is standing by its decision to publish the piece ripping Snyder, and calling McKenna a “stellar reporter.”

So it sounds like Snyder won’t get his wish, and McKenna won’t be fired. And Snyder will also discover that his decision to ask for McKenna’s termination ensures that many people who hadn’t read “The Cranky Redskins Fan’s Guide to Dan Snyder” will now.

  1. I’d like to recommend some good reading material to Mr.Synder………It’s called the United States Constitution. The First Admendent section was of particular interest to me….it talked about this concept called “free speech”. Pretty good read

Does Snyder want the 5 million fans that agree with the writer, fired also?
    ______________________________–

I agree with you, but not on the Redskins having 5 million fans.

  3. From the article: Dan-Jazeera: How Al Koken, a former employee of Snyder-owned sports station WTEM, describes the Redskins owner’s media operation.

    That’s comedy gold.

  4. if you can’t take criticism, then you have no place in leadership. he needs to sell the team immediately.

as a Cowboys fan, I hate the Skins however that is a proud franchise who was a worthy opponent for YEARS and he has now made that organization a joke.

  5. I love this guy – he insures the Redskins SUCK, and will continue to SUCK for years to come & we won’t have to deal with annoying Skin(flute) fans for years to come!!!

…and O, by the way, you Napoleonic, arrogant piece of crap, as a public figure, good luck in winning any lawsuit. While it’s not the be all & end all on the subject, you might want to look into Larry Flynt & Jerry Falwell to understand that you’re wasting everyone’s time & money with a lawsuit…

  6. For anyone who read the article.., or cares to look it up and read it now…, will see it’s a well documented, scathing, but honest portrayal of Dan Snyder’s less favorable accomplishments as Owner of the Redskins.

The reason why Dan is so pissed about it, is because he hires and surrounds himself w/ ‘Yes Men’, who cater to whatever ideas he has. Dan probably had no idea what a prick his was/is, until he read that piece. It’s funny how beloved he thinks/thought he was/is, in the DC area.

    So glad I’m not a Redskins fan…,

  7. you think Dan and Al hangout on the weekends – sippin on gin and juice. discussing how they could possibly screw there teams over anymore?

  8. I read the linked story earlier in the morning wrap-up.

Dan Snyder is a tool and I feel sorry for all the Deadskins fans. If only fans could give up passion and stop buying merchandise, tickets, etc. could a real message be sent that he needs to go. Unfortunately it’s never going to happen as one would have to give up their coveted PSL’s and risk waiting another 20-50 years to get season seats again.

The sheer arrogance this guy has to pass off the expenses of his failed ventures, in business & football ownership, to gouge the fans to still turn a profit are a blackeye to the NFL sheild GODdell “tries” to uphold.

Being a non-Redskin fan, I only get pleasure knowing they’ll never win a GD thing with him owning that team. Sorry to the fans but it’s the truth.

  9. I have been a fan of the Redskins for 30 years so I can’t bring myself to stop rooting for the team. However, I have no problems showing my disdain for the ownership.

“Dan the Midget Man” needs to realize that this is all part of being a public figure. I read the article a while back and the statistics are 100 percent accurate. His beef is that he is being ridiculed for all to see and that won’t hold up in court.

If he can’t take the heat that comes with being a high profile person, the answer is simple: sell the team to someone who can. It may have been his dream but it is currently a nightmare.

  10. For those not from the area, we aren’t talking about the Washington Post or Washington Times. It is a local, little, free newspaper that is now going to get TONS of coverage and millions of people will now see this story since it’s now on the sports blogs and sports radio. It was a funny story that was forgotten about a week later, now Danny boy is broadcasting how incompetent he really is to the whole world.

  11. Leave it to the smallest man in the NFL to bring more attention to a three-month old story from a DC rag.

    Small, small man.

  12. absolutely comical. this guy obviously got his a.. kicked in HS….I mean..look at the midget its a given.

If my owner acted like this I would drop my team like a hot potato. But the 4skins fans cant reason that out…LMAO.

  13. “Snyder will also discover that his decision to ask for McKenna’s termination ensures that many people who hadn’t read “The Cranky Redskins Fan’s Guide to Dan Snyder” will now.”
i just now read it. I knew Snyder was a joke of an owner, but it sounds like he’s an ‘effin idiot.

  14. Unless there was slander or if it was libelous, it’s called freedom of speech. I read most of the article…seemed like the author was just stating some facts.

  15. The Little General is a complete failure as an NFL owner and he thinks Dave McKenna is making him look bad?

  16. Hey life sucks when you’re the world’s dumbest rich guy and people take notice of your endlessly moronic and wretchedly bad management of your favorite toy.

  17. I know Dave McKenna. My wife writes for the same paper. Dave is a really nice guy and his articles and reviews are always intelligent and sometimes funny (like the article about Snyder.) McKenna’s bosses at WCP are already in his corner. I seriously doubt Napoleon Jr. will wind up “victorious” in his quest. What a douche.

  18. Yeah great article….only issue is some of it is true but most of this article is NOT true. The facts are bent in favor of making him look bad as this writer can.

That is the problem with today’s news and writers…They don’t report news any longer…its opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!

Example: Snyder was blamed in this article for bringing in Saunders and his play book. NO! FALSE! Joe Gibbs was the one who brought in Saunders ..quote from Gibbs at the time ” I wanted to bring in Al because his system is similar to mine and my offense needs some updating”

there were so many things false and wrong in this article it’s sick and bad journalism. The way this writer continued to bend what has unfolded on the team all his fault.

I never knew the owner called the plays, dropped passes, lost fumbles, prepared the game plan for the opponents, had bad attitude and a teammate,! Bottom line is…YES he has made some mistakes…his main mistake has been over paying players their worth to land them…because he wants to win badly. if anything the man has been impatient to win…looking for the quick fix.

I think the press has unfairly blamed everything on the owner and unfortunately most NFL fans see something reported on espn or in a opinionated blog or article and use others opinions as their own and see it as absolute truth…SAD!

  19. Daniel Snyder is the reason the Redskins are a failure. More proof that rich people are more lucky than intelligent by far. Hey Dan this isn’t some Fed Ex packaging company, they’re human beings . I have played music (my whole life), football, baseball, basketball, worked in catering for 16 years (the very affluent) and have worked for corporations (Wells Fargo, U.S. Bank, TCF Bank) for the past 15 years. I bet I’ve forgotten more about how to treat people well (with respect, work with people and realize that with any group of people you need chemistry as well as talent) than you know. Unfortunately you’re a “rich” assclown, but you’re still an assclown!

  20. Today’s paper is tomorrow’s fish wrap — unless it provokes a stupid reaction like this.

The big papers wouldn’t have the stones to publish this. Brilliant piece, and really shows just how much of a tool Danny Boy is. I was aware of many of the stories, but seeing them all listed is rather breathtaking.

Danny would have been smart to let this die, but when was Danny ever smart about anything? And, last I knew, you can’t sue somebody for publishing the truth.

  22. Snyder is no different from his crayz protege Tom Cruise, who tries to sue anyone who says anything bad about him at all.

Snyder, if you think people hate you now, imagine how much worse it will be if you win and McKenna gets canned. It will be a national news story then!

  23. Let’s clear a few things up for the constitutionally uneducated: Freedom of speech only applies between the government and individuals. It is to prevent the government from suppressing ideas from individuals that have ideas that the government is against. Again, applies to the government only.

If you are an employee, your boss can disciplice you for saying just about anything that they disagree with and there is no constitutional protection (see Wes Welker and his ‘foot’ comments about the Jets). Also, the constitution does not protect you to slander and libel someone. Individuals can sue.

Now the freedom of the press is the right to publish without government censorship. Once something is published, it is subject to being sued if it can be shown to be slander.

Now we can add the limited rights of public figures to be libeled and slandered (a basic protection of political advertising). The courts have ruled that government and other public figures have fewer protections to slander, and is one the basic protections of the editorial cartoon.

I think everyone except Dan will agree that he is a public figure and that satire against him won’t be actionable. However, he can force the publisher to burn a tremendous amount of money defending a bogus case and prevail simply by having a deeper pocket.

  24. Bobhk,

Tough to compare little Danny and Jerry Jones. Jerry understands the media and its purpose. He’s ripped in Dallas on a daily basis, but still grants many interviews to those that have ripped him in the past.

  25. Wow. I’m not a Redskins fan but never liked this guy and just read the article. What a douche. As pointed out, would never have know he was this dorky had he not made headlines for wanting this guy fired.

  26. Dave McKenna told the little Emperor he wasn’t wearing any clothes and instead of opening his eyes, little “Danny Boy” Snyder flew off in a miniature-sized temper tantrum.

  27. Good point, Synder is such an idiot that he doesn’t realize his lawsuit based on this article is only succeeding in exposing this article to more readers, making more people realize what an ass-clown he actually is.

I want to personally think Dan for convincing me to quit the Skins many years ago when my hometown got a team… I really agonized over my loyalties to the Skins but Dan made it much easier for me to walk away.

  28. Wow i just finished reading that article,i heard all the jokes about Snyder before running the Redskins into the ground, but he seems like a scumbag also.

    ———————————————–

Actually, I think *you* may have it wrong. Newspapers (even if they’re free weekly types) have to be responsible and do fact checking, etc. While several City Paper writers have been accused of hatchet journalism, there have been extremely few cases of having to retract something because it was out and out incorrect. Just like this example, most “bad journalism” charges leveled at CP have been from people whose feelings were hurt- not because the piece copntained falsehoods.

McKenna’s overlords are already on record as saying the article is factual and does not contain anything that needs to be retracted/corrected.

While you assert that there “so many” things that are wrong in the article, but only give one example, I have to wonder if you’re not exaggerrating for a little dramatic effect. On top of that, you’re naive to believe that just because the coach (Gibbs) said, “I wanted to bring in Al because his system is similar to mine and my offense needs some updating,” It could VERY well be a case where Gibbs was not about to admit that he brought in Saunders at the direction of Snyder. A coach is s’posed to be a man’s man. He’s not gonna say “I brought in Saunders (because Snyder told me I had to bring a new OC, so I just picked the one I knew.”) Even if Snyder didn’t pick out Saunders personally, it’s almost a given that word came down (or maybe up, given Snyder’s height-challenged visage) that Gibbs was ordered to find a new OC. Therfore, Snyder set the boat rocking.

Dave McKenna hads been writing articles about Dan Snyder for *years*. Forgive me if I think he may just know a little more inside info than you do.

  30. Can I see a similar article written about Mike Brown? Love to see the stupid stuff he has done. But man Snyder seems like a piece of sleezebag work.

  31. Not sure why some of you are ripping on Redskins fans. Like most of you we grew up rooting for the local team. We did not ask for this guy to be the owner and we have no control other than to boycott games and merchandise. It could happen to anyone’s team.

  32. I can promise you this..The Redskins will not win a Super Bowl in at least the next 5 years…..Nor The Vikings, Bears, or The Eagles ! four future very, very, very bad teams

  33. Someone seriously needs to explain to me how a guy this dumb made enough money to buy the Redskins.

    ================================
Mostly true. Snyder would need to show actual malice and satire is protected. Furthermore, if the case ends up in the Fed Eastern District there is a REAL likelihood Snyder will get hit with the atty fees incurred by the newspaper. Also, I can’t imagine he wants to litigate “the truth” in open court.

  35. If you haven’t already, read the article. It’s truly hilarious. Some people have a keen business sense while others sell mattresses at amusement parks.

  36. We all know that NFL Players and Coaches read this site, I would be willing to bet my next paycheck that Snyder has read the comment board and was the one person hitting the thumbs down to every negative Snyder comment for the first half of this comment section. He probably only stopped because he wore out his mouse.

  37. I live in DC and never heard of this paper. This article was referenced in a washington post sports blog in November but it got very little attention then. It’s absolutely hilarious, one of the best articles I’ve read in a long time. Snyder is an idiot this morning the story was shared on fb less than 1000 times that number is up to 5000 now. If he wanted to keep it a secret he should have kept his mouth shut. Once again he has made the redskins the laughing stock of the nfl

  38. Objectively, he’s among the three worst owners in the NFL. He is the only common denominator of our failures over the last dozen years. He has, contrary to popular belief, made a few good decisions, but at this point anything said to support that gets lost in all the mistakes.

I wish he’d sell the team. I cannot – no matter how unflinching I am as a Redskins fan – support him and be honest with myself.

    ———————–

You must be a really weak fan if you could just drop your favorite team like that. I grew up in the DC area before Snyder was the owner, so I will always root for my home town team. But I guess, if you are a Cowboys fan living in DC or whereever, only rooting for the Cowboys because they are “America’s Team,” it would be easy to find another “favorite team.”

  40. @leevi98:

Is there someone higher up in the Redskins organization than Dan Snyder? Did Dan Snyder work for Joe Gibbs, or was it the other way around?

In any business, you are responsible for the actions of anyone in the organization that reports to you.

If you don’t want ultimate responsibility, don’t put yourself in a position of ultimate authority.

  41. iluv2play76:

  42. Nice job Danny Boy. This little outburst just probably helps to prove what McKenna wrote is spot on.

  43. MDS says: “his decision to ask for McKenna’s termination ensures that many people who hadn’t read “The Cranky Redskins Fan’s Guide to Dan Snyder” will now.”

    ————————————————

Truer words have never been spoken. Immediately following the article on the City Paper’s site it says: “PLEASE NOTE: Due to very high traffic on February 2nd, comments are being cached on a separate page.” Oh, Danny Boy, you are a putz!!!

  44. Hold IT!! Stop The Presses!! It’s a boystroll sighting!! Where have you been , loser? Do you have tickets to JerryWorld for the big event? AWWW!! Probably sitting at home like your over-hyped, under-achieving team. Did Jerry hang super Bowl tickets in their lockers when they were cleaning them out? BTW, where have you been? Seems like you went MIA about week 3. LOSER… back to Mom’s basement for you.

  45. Question is this: If Dave McKenna gets fired, how many jobs will be offered to him?

    50
    100
    500

I don’t know, but it will be a lot.

Don’t ya cry no more Danny Boy.

[PS: Dan, with all that money, you still could not pull that chick from the NFL commercial that you are in with and you know it 🙂 ]

  46. As soon as read this I started laughing really hard over it. I am so glad he is not the owner of my team.

I am not a Redskins fans although I have lived in the D.C. area for more than 25 years. Correct me if I’m wrong, Skins’ fans, but Jack Kent Cooke built JKC Stadium (now FedEx) with his own money and did not go the PSL route. Redskin fans do not have coveted PSLs. If they did they may be willing to sell them for a profit. And there is no 20-50 year wait list. See M is for “More than 200,000”: Number of names that Snyder claims are on the waiting list for Redskins season tickets. So why were the Redskins reduced to putting ads on the sides of Metrobuses this season?

I have many friends, including one son-in-law, who are loyal Skins’ fans and will always be and I feel sorry for them.

  48. Dan, nice job taking a story that EVERYONE had long forgotten and bringing it back into the news.

  49. Dan Snyder’s lawyer just announced everyone who posted a derogatory comment on this forum about Mr. Snyder will be sued. Furthermore, he is calling their employers to demand they be fired. Ha, ha! The joke is on them because half of the posters here don’t have jobs already!

  50. Cant wait to read the article , because I am a cranky Redskins fan and it is mainly because of Dan Snyder. This just in Dan Snyder just got in the Guinness book of World Records for being the richest piece of dog poop on the face of the Earth.

  51. Dave McKenna is not only a great journalist, but a very classy guy. I guess Little Danny Boy finally found a local reporter he could not buy, and he handled it just like I expected. His tantrum and thin skin in this case is probably the best evidence that the article is completely accurate.

  52. City Paper’s circulation manager should send the Synder family a thank you basket for tripling his sales.

  53. Sounds to me like they are going back to the Redskins of the 50’s-60’s, before they got good (for a while). I think they will be the new doormats of the NFL replacing the Lions and the Bengals (Thank God).

  54. After reading this article it makes sense to why the Redskins are the joke of the league. I am surprised the guy can put his socks on in the morning. I am glad I am not a fan of this team.

  55. I wouldn’t recommend to Danny boy that he asks for a jury trial. If he does, I’m volunteering to be on it. Ok, who’s with me?!!!

  56. McKenna’s article is a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a supremely incompetent madman. Snyder has failed at nearly everything he has ever done, yet he is still a billionaire. So much for our merit-based society.

  57. Ok Skins nation, time for a change. If we can raise enough to buy Danny out, then we can be true fan-owned team like the Pack. I am throwing my hat in the endzone right now to be the GM. I promise to hire real football people to actually run the team. Lower ticket and food prices. And we will run one play each half that is submitted by a fan. Show me the money!!!!

The first amendment protects free speech from the government. Snyder’s reaction has nothing to do with violating the first amendment. He’s free to say what he wants, just like the reporter is. Doesn’t mean he’s correct, but he has the same rights to speak as the reporter does.

  61. From what I’m reading elsewhere the part of the article Snyder is so upset about is the accusation of forgery, a federal offense. Apparently Snyder attempted to have that part of the article changed and the City Paper refused.

  62. Cmon Snyder, do you have any brains at all? Try getting some winning teams for a change…

  68. One-million sperm and he’s the one who gets through. What a waste. Thank you for destroying my football team.

  69. after reading the entire thing I have to say, what a friggin tool! I can’t believe anyone that dysfunctional could ever be successful enough to buy and manage a pro team. I feel sorry for the Redskin faithful.

  70. Kudos to Bill Gates for kicking him off the board of Six Flags. Everything Snyder touches turns to crap. I saw the light after Gibbs left. I gave up my season tickets when they gave Haynesworth 100 million and hired Zorn. I’m the Super Bowl champs won without a 100 million dollar man why cant we? Snyder = dbag!

    —–
I guess if you choose your team because you like their pretty helmets or because you jumped on the band wagon during their super bowl years then dropping or boycotting your favorite team would be relatively easy.
Unfortunately some fans have been raised on their teams and have a relationship built on the good times and the bad. Those of us that have these kind of feelings cannot dismiss them so easily as guys like “boysroll”. This is why owners like Snyder really hurt us and why we live with the hurt season in and season out.
We still love our glory era coaches and players and cling to them with loyalty. Our owner may be our biggest frustration but because of our loyalty we cannot simply abandon our favorite team.
It would be convenient to be a fan like “boysroll” and jump on and off the wagon at will or to pick our favorite team based on logo, helmets, cheerleaders, or whatever other reason “boysroll” may have. However its obvious he didn’t choose the “boys” because he grew up with the team, loved them back in the day, is from the hometown area, or some other reason that most of us choose our teams.

Simply giving up is not an option for most fans we don’t follow a team because it is the “cool” thing to do.
