The NFLPA database shows wide receiver Santana Moss’ contract as extending through 2012, but the Redskins were forced to restructure his deal during the 2009 offseason to account for their excessive spending. One of the clauses added to Moss’ deal made him eligible for free agency in 2011.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Moss’ contract will officially void on Friday, five days after Super Bowl XLV.
He’ll be eligible to test the free agent waters once a new C.B.A. is established.
Moss set a career high with 93 receptions in 2010, playing all 16 games for the third straight season. His yards-per-reception average fell to 12.0, a career low, but that was due mostly to playing a different position in first-year Redskins coach Mike Shanahan’s offense. Shanahan used the longtime deep threat as a slot receiver.
Washington is dangerously thin in the receiver corps, and it’s fair to wonder if Moss might be under consideration for the franchise or transition tag.
Moss turns 32 in June, so the Redskins probably aren’t going to sign him long term.
