Bruce Matthews expected to join Titans staff

Two weeks ago,  Texans offensive assistant coach Bruce Matthews said that he signed a two-year contract to stay in Houston.

Now he’s headed to Tennessee to meet with Mike Munchak, which is considered a formality before Matthews joins the Titans staff.   So what happened?

Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean indicates Matthews never actually put pen to paper in Houston.  Since he’s technically unsigned, he’s free to join the division rival Titans.

Matthews must have changed course when Jeff Fisher was fired in Tennessee.   As John McClain of the Houston Chronicle points out, Munchak and Matthews are “best friends” that presented one another at their respective Hall of Fame ceremonies.

The Titans may not have a quarterback, but they will definitely have great depth when it comes to legendary offensive linemen on staff.

  1. They are best friends and even being a Texans fan it is good to hear about Matthews leaving and going to coach with Munchak. Besides in Houston Matthews was like 3rd in line when it came to coaching the OL, he wasn’t the main man. So overall this will be a better move for him not only in his personal life but in coaching too.

Hope that works out for them. Art Shell had Jackie Slater on his staff and they had one of the worst offensive lines I can remember. Good players don’t always make good coaches.

  3. This should be an excellent hire.

If Tennessee can hire the coaches who I’ve heard are rumored to be up for the remaining vacancies, they should be fine.

Haven’t heard any names yet for the newly open OC job yet, though. Not surprising, since it just came open yesterday…

  4. Don’t forget Bruce’s son Kevin plays Center for the Titans. That may have had something to do with the decision as well. Good research there 3Gs!
