Dan Snyder’s employee Tony Kornheiser avoids discussing lawsuit

AP

The lawsuit that Redskins owner Dan Snyder filed against the Washington City Paper seems tailor made for Tony Kornheiser to weigh in on. Although Kornheiser is best known around the country for hosting Pardon the Interruption and formerly occupying the Monday Night Football booth, he built his career as a D.C. media figure who wasn’t afraid to take on powerful people in the sports world.

But Kornheiser’s career now includes cashing a paycheck from Snyder, and Kornheiser is staying silent on Snyder’s suit.

Author John Feinstein, who frequently appears on Kornheiser’s radio show on the Snyder-owned WTEM, has been one of the harshest critics of Snyder’s lawsuit against the City Paper. The lawsuit would be a natural topic for Kornheiser and Feinstein to discuss, but Feinstein revealed this week that Kornheiser has told him that’s a subject that cannot be broached.

“Tony Kornheiser has specifically asked me not to bring up Dan Snyder on his show,” Feinstein wrote on his personal web site. “I feel queasy about this but Tony’s my friend and it is his show.”

Feinstein is right to feel queasy: Journalists shouldn’t be in the business of tiptoeing around stories just because powerful people might not like what they have to say. Whether Kornheiser is avoiding the subject because he gets money from Snyder or, as Feinstein suggests, just because Kornheiser likes Snyder personally, he’s failing his listeners by giving Snyder the kid-gloves treatment.

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post writes that it seems odd that there hasn’t been a single sustained discussion of Snyder’s lawsuit on Kornheiser’s radio show. But it seems more than just odd. It seems cowardly. Kornheiser should tell his listeners what he thinks about Snyder’s lawsuit. Or he should tell his listeners why he won’t say what he thinks.

  1. Kornheiser is placed in a difficult position and it is not his fault.

The issue is the increase in media ownership by uber-rich people with an agenda.

  2. The story isn’t as big in DC as many national media figures are trying to make it. I think thats the reason it hasn’t been discussed on Tony show.

  3. Excuse me if I don’t shed crocodile tears for Tony Kornholer. Just keep him as far away from an announcing booth as possible and everything will be a-ok.

  4. “Journalists shouldn’t be in the business of tiptoeing around stories just because powerful people might not like what they have to say.”

Tony Kornheiser is no more a journalist than Glenn Beck or Rachel Maddow.

  5. “Or he should tell his listeners why he won’t say what he thinks.”

Why? It’s obvious he is towing the company line and protecting his job. Do you really need him to come out and say it?

  6. Mr Smith, why do you cherry pick Feinstein’s comments? Here are Feinsteins full comments: “Tony Kornheiser has specifically asked me not to bring up Dan Snyder on his show. I feel queasy about this but Tony’s my friend and it is his show. It isn’t as if there aren’t plenty of other forums for me to talk about Snyder and Snyder is one of those guys Tony simply isn’t going to go after–not because he’s paid by him but because he likes him.

Look, we all have blind spots. If you tell me something bad about Paul Goydos or Tom Watson or Gary Williams or Mike Krzyzewski or Mary Carillo or Joe Torre or Bobby Cox I’m not going to listen. Snyder is one of those guys for Tony. So is Mitch Albom, who we also disagree on. If I had a show and he wanted to come on and rip Watson’s politics, I’d probably say, ‘look, I’m sure I agree with you but the guy is my friend so let’s not go there.’ And he wouldn’t go there. So, Tony and I don’t talk about Snyder. We agree to disagree–vehemently.

  7. Mr. Tony is the man!

I’m sure he’s just gun-shy due to the fact the mothership (espn) over-reacted and suspended him when he made a very mild comment about hannah storm.

  8. Good for Tony. Not every talking head has to spew about every topic out there. Half the time they are basing their opinions on subjects they know nothing about.

Very smart move to not rip the guy your checks are coming from.

I would classify Tony more of a talking head than a journalist.

  9. “Journalists shouldn’t be in the business of tiptoeing around stories just because powerful people might not like what they have to say. ”

You mean like PFT and all things NBC?

  10. He gives Synder enough grief about the running of the Redskins. No reason to get involved in a legal matter with the boss on this one. No smart person would. There’s enough media outlets to cover this one…….oh my gosh, I’m sticking up for Kornheiser!

  11. everyone is bashing snyder for this lawsuit, he has a right to stick up for himself, im a skins fan and it seems like the popular thing to do is bash snyder (everone hop on the band wagon) this guy isnt perfect but he does everything he can to try to bring a winner, wrong or right

  12. Let’s be clear about one thing, Tony was never and will never be a journalist. He is/was a columnist and that’s it. As a DC native, I thoroughly enjoyed reading his work, but his ego got the best of him. One can not expect him to be impartial when he works for and is good friends with Danny.

  13. Give me a break. Tony Kornheiser works for Dan Snyder. Dan Snyder has forbidden him from discussing the case.

End of story. Tony Kornheiser is not an investigative reporter, not really any type of reporter at all. He freely admits this- he calls himself a “yodeler”. There is nothing wrong with him obeying an order from his employer. He is a talking head who comments on news, not a maker of news, and he is completely out in the open about that.

Bill Simmons of ESPN has freely admitted in his columns that he is forbidden by his employers from being critical of other ESPN employees. There are times on his podcasts where he will intimate that he is not allowed to talk about certain things.

At least he doesn’t make up fake stories to pump up his coworkers, like this site does every time they put a screaming headline about Tony Dungy turning down another head coaching job he wasn’t even being considered for.

  14. This story is funny to me and just shows how out of whack the media has become. Formerly there used to be broadcast standards, you couldn’t just loudly spout off about anything without these things called “facts” or risk public outcry over poor taste. Be that as it may, running your yap had consequences and still does.

  15. I see no issue. If someone totally criticized their employer or fellow employees or on-air personnel on air, they’d be gone (particularly if it was ESPN). Kornheiser already got suspended for criticizing Hannah Storm. So he’s going to criticize a guy that pays him? No way. I detest Kornheiser but he’s handling it as best he can.

  16. I suspect the truth is closer to Kornheiser just liking Snyder. I suspect his income from WTEM is a small fraction of his income from ESPN and even he lost that job the infamy would get him another show on a competing station if he wanted it. In the end, like him or not, does anyone really think he’s working two jobs because he needs the money?

  17. Typical nonsense story. Tony has given his opinion on the air about this story on 980 and ESPN TV. Get a real scoop please.

  18. Kornholio, I am disappointed. This is just the latest in you going soft on controversial sports issues. You will take pot shots at Hannah Storm about her clothes, but you refuse to discuss the biggest story about one of the most controversial owners in sports? Light-weight!

Tony, you no longer deserve to host ANY sports show. You’ve proven you can be bought.

  19. I love how Kornheiser’s rival station ‘105.7 The Fan’ can talk about the Washington Post suspending its own employee and his ex-Post colleague Mike “Wise Ass”, but Kornheiser doesn’t have the balls (ahem, I mean fortitude) to talk about the dumbest employer in the world, Dan Snyder!!!

  20. Kornheiser is an ignoramus, an egotist, and a useless self-aggrandizing piece of rubbish. He fits right in D.C.

  21. You’ve got to be fair….although it is a double edged sword…Tony knows where his bread is buttered, and we all know Snyder is a fool a straight lunatic! he’d fire Tony just as he may say good morning, so Tony cant’ really play with it, now….as a journalist, and as part of his craft, he should speak on these items, (Danny’s foolery) but hes’ caught up in the matrix on this one. Being an impartial journalist, or having a paycheck!
Tony wanna show you have big ones and write or speak about whatever, or are you a good company man, and need the check every week? not a hard choice.
    http://www.reallionnaire.blogspot.com

  22. Why are other media members calling out Tony? Do they need Tony to start on something they are missing? Seems like the sharks are circling themselves here.

  23. I’m no brainiac on all things Kornholio…

But there’s 2 ways to go here… 1. Kornholio thinks Snyder is a jerk or 2, he thinks Snyder is right and has every right to sue.

If it’s #2, then why no defense? But you can’t be in the business of sports journalism, be it just an opinion guy, and think it’s alright to sue a reporter or opinion writer out of a job because you don’t like the message… And in so doing make stuff up (nothing was said about your wife’s breast cancer Snyder and there’s no proof of antisemitism.

Kornholio is weak and he’s gonna plummet and get no ratings. Snyder should hire him as a PR guy, not as an opinion guy if all he wants is good press.

Oh, and the guy who thinks Snyder cares about winning? Ha ha ha! No, he cares about money.

  24. He’s talked about it before, but briefly. Everyone knows his show is mostly not about sports. Everyone knows he is paid by Snyder, and is friendly with him. Kornheiser has been in Snyder’s box for at least one Redskins game. Everyone knows this, there is no need for him to explain it. Poor reporting by MDS. There is no story here.

    ======================

You’re right, he doesn’t need the money from either job.

The fact is, and TK has said this hundreds of times, he loves his radio show more than anything else he does.

He hated giving it up when he took MNF (which, by the way, he walked away from, and was not fired from) and is not going to do anything to jeopardize his show now.

    @raj:

What the hell is the comparison with some hack Catonsville station talking about Wilbon leaving the post and TK not talking about Snyder?

Get back on your meds, dude.

thats right cuz we can all go on national tv and talk dirt about our bosses and keep our job…
    ______________________
yeah, because Kornheiser really needs that check from Snyder. He’s one of two hosts of a very successful show on ESPN and he has a daily talk radio show. If the talk radio gig is the one that’s linked to Snyder, then Kornheiser is still fine. I’m sure there’s more than one talk radio station in D.C. If Snyder fired him for commenting on the lawsuit, Kornheiser would get picked up in no time. Not only would he bring in listeners, but there’s the added benefit of that station hiring him after he was fired for speaking out against Snyder’s actions. That’s the kind of press you just can’t buy, and it would no doubt please the station owner to stick it to one of his main rivals.

  27. A lot of people are ripping on Kornheiser… I can’t. It’s easy for us to take the high road but it’s a totally different animal ripping on the guy who signs your paycheck and is proving right now that he vindictive. I would do the same thing as Kornheiser.

  28. “Tony Kornheiser is no more a journalist than Glenn Beck or Rachel Maddow.”

You are so far off base on that statement it made me laugh. I don’t like Maddow’s show that much but the woman happens to have a degree in journalism and she presents stories which have actual facts in them. Beck is a morning dj reject with a communications degree (just like half of the nfl players do) and just makes up random conspiracy theories on his show sans facts. Please try to understand the difference between these two people.

  29. People should listen to the show or not comment at all. He has talked about it on his show.

Oh i know…he should just spend his whole show bashing the Redskins like the idiots Lavar and fat boy

  30. ” I don’t like Maddow’s show that much but the woman happens to have a degree in journalism and she presents stories which have actual facts in them. Beck is a morning dj reject with a communications degree…”

I have a degree in business administration. That doesn’t mean I’m a boss.

Rachel Maddow is an Air America reject.

Beck is on in the middle of the afternoon, when everyone is driving home, and still gets more ratings than Maddow, who is on in primetime.

That said, they’re both non journalist hacks. Beck is just better at it than Maddow.

This post will be deleted along with my other one, since PFT has to protect their own NBC properties.

  31. Sweet, 4 posts deleted in under a half hour. PFT loving their censorship of posts criticizing their Liberal overlords, and get this, with no offensive language.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

That may all be true, but you have to admit Kornholer does a great Penguin Dance.

  33. Who is PFT to say that Kornheiser must rip Dan Snyder for this lawsuit? Snyder might win the lawsuit and be justified. It seems that PTF just want more people to jump on the bandwagon to criticize Snyder. Folks outside of D.C. only hear the D.C. media’s perspective of Snyder which is not always accurate because he seldom speaks to the media. It’s all second hand nonsense in most cases and sensationalism. TK is smart to stay quiet until it plays out in court. PFT can be a-holes sometimes.

  34. Everyone is missing the point. This story goes wrong here, “Feinstein revealed this week that Kornheiser has told him that’s a subject that cannot be broached.”

This Feinstein is a tool and living in the market I have to endure his “analysis”. Thank god for the mute button!

Ugh not this guy again, talk about nepotism.

You realize beck is a cnn reject with ratings that are steadily falling right? Why wouldn’t your comment get posted? It’s not against site rules to post moronic, politi-bable you know.
