Cam Newton sees himself as football player, entertainer, icon

We in the football media will have little to do for the next week other than pore over every last detail we get about the people participating in the NFL Scouting Combine, so we’re grateful that this year’s most intriguing prospect, Cam Newton, will also be a full participant.

And we’re also grateful that Newton gives us plenty to comment on not just with his arm and his legs, but with his mouth.

Peter King reports that Newton told him in a phone interview today, “I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon.”

As King notes, that’s the kind of comment that makes old-school football coaches blanch. Newton’s talent is undeniable, and yet I have a feeling there are more than a few NFL coaches who see comments like that and wonder if Newton is the kind of guy they want in their locker rooms.

  1. Congrats Cam your stock just dropped.

There are football players, and guys who play football. Cam is clearly a guy who plays football.

    Word up.

  2. Cam Newton sees himself as a football player, entertainer and icon…We see Cam Newton as Vince Young verson 2.0.

  3. Here we go, another TO, Ocho, Braylon, etc, etc, etc, and now we are supposed to believe he had no idea what his dad was up to.

  4. Yeah…this guy will be a bigger version of Mike Vick…or Vince Young…or Shaun King.

Problem is, he’ll see himself bigger than the system and instead of playing within the team’s offensive means, he’ll want to pull the ball down and run, which always leads to problems for any QB. Sooner or later, the big hit will put him on IR.

Let’s hope he can keep up with the hype….I’m going to go with a NO vote on that. Remember how Jamarcus Russell was a “can’t miss”??

  5. You can take Cam’s comment’s in two completely different ways:

1.) He understands the super-stardom that comes along with being an NFL QB and will make strides to act accordingly

    OR

2.) He’s going to be a ‘me-first’ player who will cause more headaches than his extreme talent is worth.

My guess is more folks will be aligned with #2.

  6. Run the headline …and cue all the hateful responses for Cam Newton…

Seriously though. How many “old school” football coaches are there?

Modern coaches know what to expect from today’s athletes. Just like the players themselves, all the coaches are just tv stars in waiting.:Gruden, Herman Edwards, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Cowher, etc.

  7. how about you complete a pass in the NFL before calling yourself and Icon. Your dad tried to pimp you to the highest bidder, and now your an Icon??????

    Cam, Please!

  8. HERE we go. Another little college dweeb thinks he’s actually worth something.

    DRAFT BUST.

  9. Shoot!

I was too late with my “yeah, I think Jamarcus Russel thought the same thing” comment.

Too many busts fit his characteristics and athleticism…and attitude. I stay away from him until the bottom of the first round at the earliest.

  10. Ironically, back in 2006 Matt Leinart and his agent expressed the same thoughts about how Matt easily could cross-over to entertainment and advertising and become a matinee idol and icon as well as NFL QB.

    Wonder how that worked out????????????

I think more folks WANT to be aligned with #2. Hate is all the rage these days. Pun intended.

  13. I admit, this doesn’t look good but what was the question asked to him? I don’t think the question was, “How do you see yourself?” At least I hope not.

  14. And does he realize that not only has a put a bigger target on his back, every NFL defender is going to tee off on him about 30% more to knock the “icon” out of him.

Glad my team has Rodgers. And for whoever gets him … sorry guys.

  15. Most thought that his older brother Cedrick would turn out to be The Entertainer of the family.

  16. Too many haters. I’m not saying he should hands down go #1 overall, but I don’t see how any of this years QBs deserve to be taken before him.

  17. Not sure what he thinks the upside to those comments are. Then again, not sure how much thinking he does. Beware to clubs looking at him. If you don’t know history of this type of player, you are bound to repeat it.

Basically. Let’s be honest here. There are a ton of white NFL fans that, for some reason, want him to fail and do nothing more than stereotype him.

I don’t like the comment but I can’t judge a person based on this. He’s said tons of things that I like, most notably that he wants to be great and will work to be great. As far as I’m concerned, most of NFL QBs are full of themselves. He just needs to learn to pull a Peyton Manning and constantly say “humble” when speaking.

  19. It’s too bad we didn’t know what question Peter King asked to get this answer, as THAT could be very telling.

First thing he needs to do is just do something, anything Positive on the Football field, then do it again, and again, and again….THEN you can turn into Neon Deion!

Icon? It will be nice to see you flop.

    ————————————–

How immoral is it to wish for a 21 year old to fail? This is repugnant.

  21. Who knows how the new CBA will affect rookie players wages, but either way its safe to say that he won’t need a second job to make ends meet.

If I’m an owner that will be investing millions of dollars on Cam Newton, he better damn well consider himself only a QB. There are just too many red flags with this guy……

  22. …we can say what we want – but he’ll be makin’ more than most of us (already than some of us) in a few weeks…

  23. Wonder how this “entertainer, icon” would feel about spending 5 years in Buffalo. That would do alot for his street cred. Look to T.O. for an example.

  24. Let’s look at the NFL. Every QB is the icon of the team. Every football player is an entertainer, because what is football? entertainment! and every football player is (GASP) a football player. so essentially all he’s saying is he wants to be an NFL QB. what’s wrong with that? nothing. stop hating. Let’s see how many thumbs down I get for this one.

  25. Don’t underestimate this guy.

Newton wasn’t some wet-behind-the-ears kid when his talents were being shopped; he was more than halfway through his 20th year and extremely savvy. Auburn wasn’t even on his list of possible schools. He met with them once, signed within two weeks to attend for one year, and has no long-term loyalty to the institution, Since the investigation is ongoing, the school could face major sanctions while he walks away scot-free. But in the middle of all the controversy, he grabbed the mic at game and had the whole stadium eating out of his hand. He sidesteps reporters like a seasoned politician.

He’s smart, handsome, has a Tom Cruise smile–and is both bigger and faster than Roethlisberger (though not as tubby). His biggest challenge will be settling into the pocket and not taking the ball and trying to make every play himself. He is absolutely serious about becoming an “icon,” and his ego is huge.

Whatever he turns out to be, it won’t be another lazy Jamarcus Russell

  26. It is one thing to think it, even discuss it with your close friends and family. It is a whole other thing to purposely tell this to the media. As an Auburn fan I love what he brought to the program. But I liked him better when he just shut up and played ball. Most Diva’s tend to wait till they play in the NFL before showing their diva-ness.

  27. @bigbigodnarb

Obviously you weren’t here during the lead up to the draft for Tim Tebow or to a lesser extent Jimmy Clausen.

Race has NOTHING to do with it

  28. Last time I seen so many angry white folks it was when Barack Obama was elected President.

Chill, I am quite sure the whole conversation wasn’t … I am also a entertainer and icon.

  29. I con the tests in college, I con my fellow students, I con the police, I con the NCAA, I con the media……

  30. Sounds like a douche bag to me… I’d like to see Ray Lewis welcome this “entertainer” and “icon” into the league next season. Who does this guy think he is, Sammy Davis Jr.?

  31. >He’s smart, handsome, has a Tom Cruise smile

    Like OJ.

    >His biggest challenge will be settling into the pocket

Wait till he meets Raji and Green.

Blame it on his age, his meddling father, his agent, or anything else…he has already stepped on his first pile of crap. You’re absolutey right. It’s all about saying the right things and pretending to be humble—especially for black folks. It’s funny. White folks just love to hear about black kids who come from poverty, who have to “fight” for everything they have.

Then, when they succeed, they want them to be “humble,” as if they still owe white folks something.

But I still think its also about my earlier comment. Just a lot of really bitter people masquerading as “fans.”

  35. Amazing how Andrew Luck drops out of the draft and now people care about what this clown has to say.

I think the QBs this year are terrible and I hope Buffalo passes on this guy until (at least) the 2nd round, cuz you know he’ll still be available.

  36. I know next to nothing about this kid but sounds like an arrogant egomaniac so far. Do something beyond the college level Cam before you take yourself too seriously.

  37. WOW!! All of a sudden I don’t like the guy.

What part of Warren Moon did he listen to, Moon would never say something like this.

To me Cam has got “bust” written all over his face, from day one his dad has hyped him and pretty soon he’s gonna answer for the hype.

I have to wonder….When is the NFL gonna fall out of love with the zero intelligent, athletic, strong arm, scramblin quarterback? The NFL longed have looked for the combination of Barry Sanders/John Elway and its a silly quest that always ends up in a BUSTED player.

The problem is, like Cam and Vick, most of these players who are quarterbacks are more “Barry Sanders” less “John Elway” to begin their NFL careers. Thus turn their careers from the hype machines they were into turnover machines they become.

If you consider doing Anchor Bar Hot wing or local snowblower dealer commercials becoming an icon then you’re good. Maybe go the old fashioned route, focus on taking care of business on the field worry about being an “entertainer , after your playing days are over. Good luck whomever picks this dude he has “diva ” written all over him.

  41. @chapnastier, who says:

Race has NOTHING to do with it.
    —————————————–
Yeah, it’s mostly about hate. It usually is. Hate for Newton, hate for athletes, hate for life in general. Got it.

Only question is: why so much hatred? Were you people not hugged as children?

  42. @chapnastier

not sure how you can say race has nothing to do with it when the only people that Cam is being compared to are other black quarterbacks as if no white quarterbacks with great upside have ever flopped. Why does he have to be Vince Young 2.0? Why can’t he be a modern day Warren Moon or Doug Williams?

A few months ago Joe Flacco says he is an elite quarterback and everyone you agree with himeven though it was proven again that he is not. Cam says he is an icon- object of great attention and devotion, and you intimate that he is arrogant. Let’s see, are we paying attention to him? Is this article devoted to him? I’d say he spoke truth but its hard to hear it when he has been placed under an amazing amount of scrutiny. All that any of us who respond to these blogs can do is make predictions concerning his possible professional career. What I do know is that he has indeed become an icon with all of the attention and devotion that has been given to him. Let’s just let the kid do what he does and time will tell all.

  43. Newton will change his tune. All it will take is a couple of days of rookie hazing at training camp. Big man on campus means nothing in the NFL.

  44. @alltimeballa. Joe Flacco never called himself an elite QB.

But most of these people are hatin pretty hard. Just bcuz the kid has confidence doesn’t mean he’s gonna be a flop and it doesn’t make him a bad person. this kid has done nothing to anyone. bcuz his dad tries to get some money from some colleges Cam is a bad person. From what the NCAA has said and from what they found from their investigation Cam had nothing to do with that scam. But I’m sure you random people posting on here know much better than the NCAA. This kid has never done anything to anyone. He’s never harmed a person. But you all have to hate. You all have to hope he fails and hope he doesn’t make it just because he has some confidence and talent. You should be ashamed for yourselves. what’s wrong with you people? Oh he said he sees himself as a football player, an entertainer and an icon. you never stop and ask what was the question that that was the response to? you just assume he’s a bad person. Everyone hoping this kid fails must be miserable and hate their lives.

Good luck Cam Newton. I hope you win a SB your first year just to see how many of these worthless people change their tunes afterwards.

  45. Last time I’ve seen a lot of mad people, it was when Barack Obama won the election.

Football players are entertainers and that what he is. Is he an icon? Yes, he is an icon in College football. *He has awards to show*

You guys need to get your panties out of a bunch.
You didn’t hear the whole conversation, so stop assuming.

  46. football player, entertainer, icon, and bust.

He’ll fall to the 32nd pick and the Packers will…… trade the pick to the Vikings so they can draft him.

  47. @alltimeballa …

Wait a minute. Bad behavior is bad behavior, and that has nothing to do with race. And you can disapprove of bad behavior without wanting people to fail.

I think Newton is a shrewd, savvy, egotistical guy who’s first priority is Cam Newton. That’s not unique in professional sports. I’m certain Auburn paid for his services and that he was in on the deal but will never face punishment. As always, those who’ll suffer most will be future Auburn students who had nothing to do with it but will live under the sanctions.

But despite all the double-dealing, Cam’s talent is real, and I’m anxious to see how it translates to the NFL. I have a skepticism about spread QBs, but that has nothing to do with race. I’ve never been more skeptical about anyone than Tebow. But Newton has the arm if he can learn to hang in the pocket. I hope he doesn’t go to Buffalo because I’d like to see him on a more visible team. I don’t particularly care for him personally, but I can’t stand Brady and there are few QBs I’d rather watch than Captain America. Newton is an amazing talent. If you love the game, you have to be excited about watching that kind of talent progress.

  48. Basically. Let’s be honest here. There are a ton of white NFL fans that, for some reason, want him to fail and do nothing more than stereotype him.

If you’re white then you are just a pathetic little dweeb that wants everyone to see how not racist he is.. which makes you even more racist. I don’t really care what you are dude, I’m just sick of this race war crap, its getting really old.

  52. @lucky5927 …

Thank you. Despite the rivalry, nothing personal in saying I think Auburn paid. Just don’t believe he’d have played for free. No program is squeaky clean.

  53. @ alltimeballa

The only people who are saying this is about race is the obvious people that are black. I specifically referred to Tim Tebow and Jimmy Clausen to make a point. I could also referr to Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, Kevin Kolb, David Carr, Alex Smith etc etc. in terms of QB busts.

While I cannot speak for everyone I ASSUME he will be a bust because of his off field issues. People throw around racism too much in todays world. As a result it casts a shadow over real racist acts that still occur and deserve real attention.

  54. ICON…really 14 games and he is an icon, wow i think this kid is overstateing his stock in most peoples eyes,as far as entertainment football is passion not entertainment it does entertain but i just want my team(the bungles so i know a thing or two about clowns who think they are more than football players) just play and from the looks of it less talking by u equals more money, dont think anyone is confusing you with a rhodes scholar

  55. The kid has a plan for life after football not sure why you can hate on him for that. He wants to be known more then just being a football player. Not sure why that is a sin.

You know its funny those that knew him best last year, a lot better then any nimrods on this board, mainly his teammates and coaches loved the guy. Anyone remember his teammates putting him on their shoulders after the SEC Championship game?
Guess they didn’t find him a me first egotistical self centered player.

Also Its good to see those on this board know more then then NCAA President when you continually say Cam was paid, NCAA President Mark Emmert “There was no evidence that money had changed hands and there was no evidence that Auburn University had anything to do with it,” Emmert said. Hello!!!

Show me the evidence, where is it? The NCAA can’t find it.

  56. Ravensfan4life you apparently are the only person with common sense on here that examines the facts. Of course we could be intellectually bankrupt morons and live in rumor and innuendo.

  57. Cam’s wonderlic score, over/under 10, I say under.

Thumbs up if you say under 10, thumbs down if you say over 10.

  58. anyone who says there is too much hate on here has to get it through their thick skull that people are sick to death of one showboating big mouth college kid after another who hasn’t proven squat on the field, walking into the league and poisoning it with their ‘tudes! Just play and shut up, make a real name for yourself first. Dont follow in the footsteps of T.O., Ocho, Vince Young, and any other guys who are just popular for having diarrhea of the mouth and s**t in their brains. Winning championships isn the goal, right? Not doing back up on a 50-Cent album. MAN!

  59. The QB position is all about leadership and what’s between the ears, and we’re getting a clear picture of what goes on in Newton’s noggin, and it’s delirious. Some chump GM is going to pick this knuckler in the top 5, and live to regret it.

  60. @augradoo …

Cecil Newton’s asking price from Miss. State was $200,000 but he said he would knock off $20,000 because of his relationship with Dan Mullen. Then the Newtons paid a single visit to Auburn–a school not even on their radar–and Cam signed within two weeks.

So their asking price was six figures. They were willing to give Mullen a $20,000 discount for old time’s sake. But Cam inexplicably switched to Auburn after one meeting … for nothing? Right.

Emmert has said the investigation is ongoing and more people were questioned this week. In June, 10 defendants including two major Auburn boosters, begin trial on federal conspiracy, bribery, and fraud. If convicted, they face millions in fines and nearly 300 years in prison. A third booster took a plea deal and will testify against the others. Evidence includes 50 hours of 2,700 wiretapped phone calls. The FBI’s probe is also ongoing, and the feds have indicated there’s a link between their probe and Auburn recruiting practices.

Perhaps nothing will come of it. Or as with USC, it may be years before all the info is released. Say what you want publicly, but at least prepare yourself.

  61. OH MY GOD…HOW DARE CAM HAVE AMBITION OUTSIDE OF THE NFL WHEN HE GETS OLDER. HOW DARE HIM DREAM OF BEING AN ICON. So let me see if I get this straight, this Peter King guy has a phone interview with Cam. Then posted on his tweet of what the kid said in what appears to be an attempt to set him up then Mr. Smith picks it up and repost the Peters tweet and tries to use to to sabotage this kid.

Mr. Smith, why are u and your sporting buddies so treatened by Cam. Why are u intentionally “Tiger Woods-ings” this kid. Ur continual undermining of this kid’s talent and scrutinizing of everything he does screams of elitist SNOBBERY. I wonder why??

Ur posting reads like a typical arrogant behind, who enjoys hating simple because everyone else is. The fact that ur hating on QB just because he didn’t perform well enough for u, speaks volumes.

Cam is right…He is “an entertainer and an ICON.” Judging by the many sports writers who simply incorporate his name into everything just to get folks like u to react and help them keep a job. How dare him speak the truth..

But why should we be surprised, these sports writers actually make folks like u feel relevant by feeding ur weakness so they can keep a job and feed their egos.
