Saints cut Jeremy Shockey

The New Orleans Saints are cutting ties with tight end Jeremy Shockey.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports first reported that the Saints are terminating Shockey’s contract, and the Saints have confirmed the move.

“It’s a business, I understand,” Shockey told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols. “I’ll just go play hard for someone else. Whoever gets me it’s going to be a steal.”

Shockey has long been a favorite of Saints coach Sean Payton, who was the Giants’ offensive coordinator in 2002, when Shockey was the Giants’ first-round draft pick. So in that respect this move may seem like a surprise.

But the Saints loved the production that rookie tight end Jimmy Graham had in 2010, so it’s not a shock that Shockey is being let go to make room for Graham as the new No. 1 tight end in New Orleans.

  1. I’ve never bought into “Shockey is great”. He is pretty damned good for sure. But great? Nope.

  2. Shockey’s body is breaking down and the Saints have two other quality TE’s. I’ll give this to Shockey, the man plays so hard it’s ridiculous. The guy goes over the middle and runs with no helmet on. I think he’ll land somewhere, it just won’t be easy since there are so many good young TE’s in this league.

  3. Hey Jeremy…just try not to “Over exert” yourself at any Vegas pools this off season and you should have no trouble finding work in 2011.

  4. so it’s not a shock that Shockey is being let go to make room for Graham as the new No. 1 tight end in New Orleans

I see what you did there.

  5. ..it makes sense – even to him…but i always hate to see it end that way – good luck & Geaux Saints!!!

  6. Shockey ‘s better days are behind him. Big mouth, big money, not enough talent. SEEEE YA !!!!!

  7. Shockey is a tough SOB who played hurt a lot and was key figure in Super Bowl run….his leadership and toughness in locker room will be missed. That said, it is a business, and Jimmy Graham is a star in the making and was a steal in the third round for us.

  8. Between Graham and Thomas, they should be fine without him. Where will football’s answer to John Rocker go next?

  9. “Whoever gets me it’s going to be a steal.”

Only if he plays for free. He is barely worth the veteran minimum if he agrees to keep his mouth shut which he hasn’t done yet in his career.

  10. come to atlanta, backup gonzo for one year and he’ll prob retire n starter is all urs n teach rudolph the ropes wen we draft him n michael palmer already on our roster

  11. hmm.. I wonder if this is purely a monetary issue or something else? There will be teams lined up for his services though.. And he’s right, he will be a steal when he signs for the veterans minimum..

  12. couldnt have asked for a much better career though. statistically one of the best tight ends ever, won a superbowl with the saints, and held on while the defense in new york won one for him.

  13. Shockey will land on his feet soon enough. He’s proved that he can be a team player during his time with the Saints. There are a lot of teams that could use a TE like him.

  14. Great line “Whoever gets me it’s going to be a steal.”. Just slightly optimistic there Jeremy..as if you are ‘definitely’ going to be picked up. Then again..he’s always been blissfully ignorant.

  15. Wow. Remember this kid in his rookie year? He was a freak. Now, he’s a castaway.

NFL really does stand for Not For Long.

  16. his production didn’t match up with his salary, and Jimmy Graham is shaping up to be a bona fide stud. hope you enjoyed your stay, Shock. we loved having you.

  17. Too bad he couldn’t stay healthy. He’s talented as hell but you can count on him missing 3-4 games/year and another 3 being nicked up to the point of being unproductive.

He helped us win a SB though, and I’ll always remember him dragging a safety 25 yards down the field against Miami in 09.

  18. I knew it
    The hack got cut again
Best thing the giants did was cut him and now the saints

I hear al davis calling or the dead skins one of those teams that like flash and no sizzle

  19. Thanks for your contributions Shockey…especially that TD in the Super Bowl. But you were always hurt (like Reggie Bush) and make way too much. You’ll be missed. xoxo

  20. Every coach has players he loves….doesn’t mean he should keep them when they can no longer play.

  21. I wouldn’t mind seeing him and Visanthe giving the Vikings a nice 1-2 punch for our single back sets.

Doubt it will happen, but for the right price I suppose it’s possible.

  22. He was a great tight end for NY and N.O. when he was on the field but he’s never played a complete season without missing a game from injury. I guess you could say that for a lot of guys though.

  23. Shockey will definitely make someone happy at TE if he can stay healthy. I never cared much for his decision to go to NO, anyways.

  24. Shockey was a good tight end but a lousy team player, double fisting at the superbowl in a suite but to good to sit on the sideline a root his team on. Just another thug from U of Miami.

  25. Better days behind him yes. But still better than anything the Eagles have at tight end.. If the price is right they should get him. Celeg drops to many balls and the rookie is mediocore at best. They could use some speed at that position too.

    dude, this is not twitter

  27. Undoubtedly some of you can’t see a good player when you see him. And then again you don’t care to. Whichever it is I must say that if it was one of your favorite players you’d be shouting from the rooftops how unfair it was that they be cut. We the Saints fans feel that Shockey was good for our team at one time and maybe he hasn’t been of late but that’s not to say that he’s a has been period. Some of you so called macho men wouldn’t last a nano second in his shoes. And before you say it I’ll confirm it: I’m a girl and I do know a thing or 2 about football. Too, there are veteran players out there today who need to be gone who are liabilites to their teams so lets not pick on just one player shall we. The main thing is lets just hope there is a season and we can all enjoy the game we enjoy.

  28. As a Saints fan I am sad to see Jeremy go. He was a bigtime postseason hero in the run to the Lombardi Trophy. I know he wasn’t as productive last season and Jimmy Graham is a huge breakout talent, but I still feel it would have been fine to have the two work in tandem.

Thanks Jeremy, for helping the Saints win the Super Bowl. No matter what happens, you will always be a Super Bowl champion.

  29. Shockey has a Super Bowl ring from each of his last two teams.. maybe the lunatic is a good luck charm.

  30. I agree with JayRock123. But he’s lived out his usefulness. Maybe now he’ll be paid what he’s worth on the field.

  31. After the news conference, Shockey decided to go to the French Quarter for one last night of dehydration.

I never would have guessed it but that’s true. I saw a list yesterday and he’s pretty close reception wise with some really great TEs.

  33. I suppose no one bothers to read statistics. They don’t lie. As a native New Orleanian and Saints fan, I am devastated that this outstanding gladiator has been cut. Not only is he enthusiastic and plays the game with a huge heart, he is one of the finest Tight Ends in football statistically also. Of course, he can actually do something other than type nasty emails….that alone makes him a source of envy. Whatever team is lucky enough to get him has a new fan. Me!
