Agent: Patriots handling of Mankins a “travesty”

In a pair of interviews Thursday evening, the agent for guard Logan Mankins blasted the Patriots once again for how the team has treated his client.

Mankins’ camp took the scorched Earth approach last offseason without great results. But Mankins’ agent Frank Bauer couldn’t hold in his frustrations any longer after a relatively long period of quiet.

“One of the best players on your football team (a player) that the coaching staff respects, it’s a travesty what they’ve done with this player,” Bauer told Tom Curran of CSNNE.com.

Bauer says they are weighing their options regarding whether Mankins will sign the tag and/or play for the Patriots in 2010. It will be a little tougher for Mankins to get sympathy this season when he’s set to make more than $10 million.

“They keep using the system against him,” Bauer added. “And we’re at a tough point in time because they said they would never tag him, time’s have changed, now they tag him. In negotiations last year they said, ‘We’re never tagging a guard. A guard’s not worth it.’ Now he’s worth it?”

Bauer also spoke to the Boston Herald Thursday evening, with basically the same points. He sounds like a frustrated guy out of ideas who needed to blow off a little steam, knowing full well that his words won’t help get the deal he and Mankins so dearly want.
