Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones always wants to create a buzz with his team’s first-round draft pick. Now there’s talk that he’s looking at drafting the player who’s generating the most buzz of any prospect in this year’s draft: Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.
Multiple reports surfaced yesterday that the Cowboys will interview Newton at the Scouting Combine. And Chris Mortensen said this morning on ESPN Radio that Cowboys coach Jason Garrett went to the Davey O’Brien Award ceremony, where Newton picked up his trophy as the best quarterback in college football, and that Garrett likes Newton’s pro potential.
“They’re going to do due diligence on Cam Newton,” Mortensen said. “They’re committed to Tony Romo right now, but Cam Newton clearly has them intrigued.”
For Newton’s part, he said he’s eager to talk to the Cowboys.
“Jerry Jones, man he knows how to get hold of me, let’s just say that,” Newton said.
But while talk of Newton to the Cowboys makes for a good story, it sounds too good to be true. The odds that the Cowboys would use the ninth overall pick in the draft on a quarterback seem remote, as all indications are that the Cowboys feel good about their current quarterback situation: Romo is under contract through 2013, backup Jon Kitna is signed through 2011 and Stephen McGee is signed through 2012.
So Cam Newton to the Cowboys is a fun story to talk about in February. Even if it probably isn’t going to happen in April.
