Eagles call ESPN claim that they pulled Vick “ridiculous”

ESPN says the Philadelphia Eagles pulled Michael Vick out of a scheduled interview this morning. The Eagles say that’s “ridiculous.”

In a statement e-mailed to PFT, Eagles spokesman Derek Boyko pinned the mix-up on Lou Tilley, who works in media for the Maxwell Club, where Vick is picking up an award today.

“Lou Tilley booked Michael for an interview with ESPN and never asked Michael or myself or any Vick representative,” Boyko said. “I was here with Michael. He never canceled. He was never asked. It was ridiculous.”

But ESPN First Take made it clear, both on the air this morning and on the show’s Facebook page, that their understanding is that Vick committed to the interview and it was the Eagles who called it off.

“To our fans, we truly apologize,” the First Take Facebook message says. “The Philadelphia Eagles have pulled Michael Vick from our interview. First Take and Oprah now have something in common.”

Vick was at a Maxwell Club press conference this morning, where it was announced that he is the recipient of the 52nd Annual Bert Bell Award. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Eagles also said at that event that they never pulled Vick from any ESPN interview.

We’ve asked ESPN for a response. We’ll let you know what we find out.

  1. Maybe it’s the agent who keeps pulling him? There’s nothing good, only bad, that could result from Vick doing interviews. If it goes well, ok fine. If it goes bad, it’s the possibility of a huge payday that goes bye-bye if he royally screws it up; which is always quite possible.

If you’re his agent, you lock him in a closet until he signs a big contract. Then let him do interviews.

  2. So someone pulled an ESPN on ESPN? That’s like cupchecking Lakers GM Mitch Cupcheck… brilliant Philly, I always knew you guys weren’t so bad…

When I first read this my mind inadvertently (but not without cause) read Albert Bell (spelled differently, I know)…. I thought ‘how appropriate’!!!

  4. So it’s neither the Eagles or Vicks fault.. What a heart breaker for the guys at PFT who love to attack him. Sounds more like an ESPN gimmick at the Eagles organization’s expense.

    Wake me when September comes.

  6. Everyone wants to just throw Vick under the bus. He was receiving an award at the Maxwell Club Awards and obviously would not have committed to an interview with that already on his schedule. People are trying their best to make Vick look like he is still a “bad man” for canceling all of these interviews. Stick to the important stories….not the “Michael Vick canceled another interview” stories. If he does something that actually is a transgression, let us know about it.

  7. You don’t think there’s a chance that Lou Tilley is the one telling ESPN that it was the Eagles orchestrating this to save his own butt … ?

  8. Well, personally I do not trust either side in this debate. The Eagles are notoriously dishonest about many things and well ESPN First Take straddles the line of credibility. I mean, I believe they have had their own legal issues in the past (Jay Crawford sexual harassment, etc.) and continue to put out a tabloid like program filled with sensationalized opinions with the sole purpose of grabbing ratings. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Eagles pulled the interview but conversely I wouldn’t be surprised if First Take lied about having the interview in order to gain a few more viewers.

  9. PFT I’m trying to figure out how you are spinning this as Michael Vick canceling when he clearly had nothing to do with the scheduling of First Take. Oprah, yes Vick canceled. First take and by their own admission said that the “Philadelphia Eagles have pulled Mike Vick from our interview”

  10. ESPN messed up….The Eagles did nothing wrong, Vick and Reid were at the banquet at the Maxwell Club…it was announced 2 days ago that they will be there. ESPN producers need to double check

  11. Hey Michael David Smith, you’re really on a roll!

Go adopt an abused puppy. That’s a better way to make use of your Vick bias than bombarding us with non-story garbage. What, now that Favre is actually done for good you need another news topic to exhaust?

“People who keep it real just bang it here.”

    Seriously?

Well, I guess that’s one way to make sure your post isn’t censored.

  13. Was Bert Bell an infamous torturer and killer of dogs, or was he convicted of knowingly infecting women with STD’s while using the alias ‘Ron Mexico’ to get treatment?

Just trying to figure out what Vick could be collecting an award for…

  14. Vick was at another location, but he couldn’t have done the interview via remote? There’s a pattern here, & b/c the Eagles have a credibility issue, we just have to figure who the LIAR is? IF there’s a LOCKOUT who’s going to tell Vick what to do?

  15. Haters…how does it feel knowing that you are all beet red and mad and Vick makes you feel that way? LOL

  16. That is ReVickulous! It’s not like the Eagles pulled him off the Oprah show or something…. Oh wait..

  17. What is this award for? Honestly, I’ve never seen a player who has accomplished so little, receive so many awards.

  18. The Eagles, Reid, Banner & the young kid are
notorious liars. I mean come on. How many times has Reid lied to the media,
” Kolb is my QB, print it….24 hrs later IT’s Vick ”
his coaches it goes on and on….The EAGLES LIE….BIG TIME

  19. Once upon a time there was a group of football bloggers who had nothing to do. “What can we do?” they asked one another. “Let’s make up stories about the really bad guy who plays football for the eagles.” So off to their computers they went, typing away. “Lets see, what can we write so that we can get 100 responses?” “Let’s say that he’s a liar even though its our fault for not VERIFYING a story before putting it in print. The people will still believe us over that really bad guy.” So off they went with their little story. Eventually people got tired of them telling the same story everyday. One day, after making up story after story, people started changing their minds about the really bad guy from PHILLY and saw that it was really just lies in print.

BE CAREFUL PFT, YOU MIGHT START CAUSING PEOPLE TO FEEL SYMPATHY FOR MIKE…. WOULDN’T WANT THAT!
