Cam Newton, Ryan Mallett both have pro days Tuesday

For any NFL team considering both Cam Newton and Ryan Mallett in next month’s NFL draft, there’s going to be a bit of a logistical problem on Tuesday.

Auburn and Arkansas both have their pro days on Tuesday, so scouts and coaches on teams considering both players will have to choose to watch either Newton or Mallett throw, not both.

One college scout told Peter King of that the way schools schedule pro days, often in conflict with each other, “Really drives me nuts.” It wouldn’t be possible to schedule pro days so that there’s never a conflict, but the scheduling could be better coordinated so that there aren’t some days with 13 different schools having pro days and others with none.

For Mallett, the pro day will be another chance to show off the rocket arm that impressed coaches at the Combine. For Newton, who wasn’t particularly impressive in passing drills at the NFL Scouting Combine, the pro day will be even more important.

  1. Don’t most teams employ enough scouts to have at least two scouting teams? I know the Packers have TT and a few, and then a whole other team of assistants and scouts on another.

So it’s not like they can’t be two places at once.

I don’t see what the big deal is. If they want to see both, it’s more than doable.

  2. I don’t see how Newton can learn to drop back and throw accurately in a few weeks.

  3. Newton and Mallett are the polar opposite types of QB. Doubt there are many teams interested in both. Both also have big question marks for NFL teams.

  4. No big deal, the Bengals have hired the world’s fastest rickshaw driver to ferry their lone scout between the workouts….

  5. calloustongue, your logic and reasoning makes too much sense. Also, MDS must not be familiar with VCRs or DVD players.

  6. @wryly1 – really? they are 2 of the top 4 QBs in this class. Both expected to go first round. You don’t think there are multiple teams interested in both?

  7. highfive:

I’m not much impressed by the potential of any QB in this year’s class to become a true franchise QB, even though there are a bunch of teams who sorely need one.

  8. like performance matters? it certainly didn’t at the combine- i’m sure the negative on mallett has already been written and just waiting to post…
