49ers don’t comment on possible tampering with Westbrook

MDS noted yesterday that it’s odd Eagles coach Andy Reid and Brian Westbrook speak on a weekly basis and wondered if the 49ers could potentially pursue tampering charges.

Asked about the situation by Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the 49ers issued a “no comment.”

Barrows thinks it’s unlikely the 49ers would pursue such charges, largely because they don’t seem to have much interest in keeping Westbrook next year.

As MDS noted, there’s also little reason to think the Eagles would be interested in signing Westbrook anyway.

  1. We fans have all seen what it takes to have “tampering” lead to fines and/or lost draft choices. Somebody in charge has to write something down, send an email, or blatantly expose one’s self in an interview to confirm the allegations.

What we all saw with Favre and the Vikings a few years ago, is that a player can call the coach of another team every day of the week, get passed around to other coaches in the building, but yet not cross the line into tampering.

So it’s unlikely that Westbrook or Coach Reid have done anything wrong… if one wants a label, it could be called the Favre Precedent.

  2. A serious question: is it tampering for a coach to befriend a player and then talk to them during the season? Seems kind of messed up to me.

  3. As a niners fan .. I can careless. IT’S time for Anthony Dixon to shine anyways. Go Niners!!!

  4. Its also possible that the 49ers are interested in acquiring Kevin Kolb, therefore don’t want to piss off the Eagles at this point in time…..especially over a player who they really aren’t interested in keeping anyway.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I’d imagine as long as the discussions don’t involve the player/coach trying to lure/offer services then it should be fine.

  6. I feel sorry for you writers. There’s just nothing going on and you have to produce news. If Andy wanted Brian he would never have let someone else sign him. Brian’s probably trying to get a coaching position. Why would Andy think Brian’s body is any less beat up than it was two years ago?
