Whisenhunt: No one in this draft stands out like Sam Bradford

Very little seems predictable about the top ten of the upcoming draft.  Practically the only the thing the national media agrees on is that the Cardinals are likely to take Blaine Gabbert if he’s available at No. 5.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, for what’s worth, made comments Wednesday that run contrary to that notion.

“There is nobody [at quarterback] that really stands out like Sam Bradford did last year,” Whisenhunt told Mike Jurecki on WTAR via Mike Sando of ESPN.com.

“There are a lot of guys that are intriguing athletically like Blaine Gabbert, like Cam Newton, because of the skill set, some of the things they can do. But I don’t think they have shown the ability to do some of the things that you have seen in the past by some of these guys like a Matt Ryan or, obviously, like a Sam Bradford.”

Sando thinks Whisenhunt isn’t blowing smoke; he’s just being honest.   Most NFL people agree: Gabbert and Newton are shakier top-five picks than some quarterbacks over the last few years.

While the national guys all think the Cardinals will take Gabbert (if he’s available), it’s worth noting Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic is going in a different direction.

“On Gabbert, my opinion is Cardinals will pass to take someone who can help in 2011,” he wrote on Twitter.

Whisenhunt’s draft history supports that theory.  So do his words on Wednesday.

“We need somebody at that spot [fifth overall] that is going to have an impact for us this year, that can make some of those plays,” Whisenhunt said.

UPDATE: Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com thinks the Cardinals will go defense.

  1. Just trade for Kyle Orton or Kevin Kolb already… that team isn’t going anywhere with anyone else. If you guys take Vince Young, you might as well just forfeit all of the [potential] 2011 season.

    Matt Leinart is available!

  2. Just because they’re not ready to start now doesn’t mean they’re not good prospects. If they had any guts they’d draft one of these guys then sign a stop-gap at QB for the next couple years, someone like Bulger. Develop the QB you picked and you’ll be set for a decade or more.

Of course it’s a risk, but fortune favors the bold.

  3. As long as Whisenhunt is the Head coach in Arizona no rookie QB is going to be good enough for that system, only a vet can run the offense system in Arizona…

  4. so trade that pick to the eagles for kolb. Oh sorry you can’t do that until a new CBA. Well maybe next year

  5. If the Bidwell family is smart, they will let their football evaluators make the selection … Gabbert is the heavily rumored selection …

I think these statements from Whisenhunt are more of a no thank you to trade up to get their guy.

  6. which is why it boggles the mind that so many mock drafts have 3 qb’s going in the top ten. I’m not sure I think any of these guys are worthy of a top-ten pick.

  7. They don’t have to be an AllPRO first round QB like Aaron Rodgers/PhilipRivers/Peyton

they just have to be a better QB than derek anderson and whatever backup QB arizona has.

  8. So…with the lock-out, could they still sign Jeff George?

I think every year I hear that he’s available and working out. It’s kinda like me and the PGA Tour. I tell them I’m ready and hit balls at the course every weekend…but no one shows up. 🙁

  9. Bradford is extremely overrated. He threw all his passes sideways last season and still ended up with a poorer passer rating than Tebow. He was nowhere near Josh Freeman in terms of production, and Freeman is bigger, faster, stronger, and younger than Bradford. So is Matt Stafford.

  10. Whiz is a doofus. The only thing he won of consequence in his career was behind a rookie QB. Gabbert is better coming out than Big Bentnose was.

  11. Cardinals will NOT be taking Gabbert…even if Von Miller and pp7 are gone.

Cards draft board has Von Miller #1 and PP7 #2

if both are gone they’ll go with best player available.

Cam Newton won’t even be on their draft board.

Our qb situation will be Marc Bulger, McSoup/Palmer/Orton, and John Skelton.
it’ll be those 3 with Max Hall going to the practice squad.

  12. It’s time fix the defense and this draft will be the second installment of talent in finishing this issue the Cardinals have had for a while now. The Whiz is trying to build the team through the draft so I don’t see him trading any picks, not for Orton, Kolb, or anybody else! He is going to go after Bulger and see if any of the other QB’s can develop or have any potential to become their future man under center.
