Mike Pouncey invited to the draft, too

Of the 20 players invited to the 2011 NFL draft, 15 names are now known.

No. 15 is Florida center Mike Pouncey, brother of Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey.

The other are Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, Cal defensive end Cameron Jordan, Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller, Alabama receiver Julio Jones, Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn, Alabama running back Mark Ingram, Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert, Georgia receiver A.J. Green, Wisconsin defensive end J.J. Watt, Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith, Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers, Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley, Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara, and Alabama defensive tackle Marcel Dareus.

Earlier this week, Mike Pouncey told Sporting News that he’ll attend the draft if invited.  Now that he has been invited, we assume he’ll be accepting.

  1. The question I have is this: when does one become a member of the NFLPA*?

Specifically, when can a rookie no longer communicate with team staff? The moment they are drafted? Once they have a contract signed? CAN a contract be signed now?

Based on that – do agents try and get a contract done fast so they don’t get trapped by a rookie wage scale? Does management drag the process out for that very reason? Do coaches try and put it off so they can get an pre-season training program and playbooks into these kids hands?

I am sure you have already answered all these questions, but I have a short attention span.

  2. I love how these player invites are being broken down into 20 different posts (note sarcasm)

why not wait until you have an entire list of the draft attendees and then release it…..nobody is on the edge of their seat waiting to hear who the next invite is.

    I hate this off season

  3. Are there usually that many dudes there? Is the NFL trying to become buddies with as many young peeps as possible? Does this look like a rash to you?

  4. Paul I believe they are treated like restricted free agents the moment they are drafted. Meaning they cannot communicate with team execs until the lockout is over so no deals can get done in the meantime.

  5. There’s no way Patrick Peterson wasn’t invited…so who are the other 4? I’m thinking Robert Quinn, Tyron Smith, Ryan Kerrigan and maybe Jake Locker.

  6. Thanks Mike – makes sense. Wonder if anyone will be greeting them on the podium besides Roger?
