Buddy Nix: Perfect time for Bills to draft a quarterback

AP

Bills General Manager Buddy Nix is talking like a man who wants to take a quarterback with the third overall pick in the NFL draft.

“There’s no doubt it’s an important position,” Nix said. “It’s a quarterback-driven league. But we think that we’re in a good position. And actually, as hard as it is to say when you’ve got other needs it’s probably the perfect time to take a quarterback.”

Nix agrees with the speculation that the 2011 draft could feature even more quarterbacks in the first round than the record six in 1983, saying there could be “a record number” of quarterbacks taken in the first round.

If the Bills do draft a quarterback, it will be either Auburn’s Cam Newton or Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert. At the moment it appears that Newton will go first overall to the Panthers and Gabbert will still be available. Nix said the Bills have “always been high” on Gabbert.

So third overall next Thursday might be the perfect time to take him.

  1. Or they might take a QB in round 2 in Kaepernick, Ponder, or Dalton, if they are there of course.

  2. Remember that we are in “silly season” and everyone is lying to anyone who will listen. See Belichick working out Ingram and Locker……

  3. God I hope so if both are off the board cincy wont gamble I’m not high on either newton or gabbert and think second rd or trading up late first will net a quality qb if any this year actually hit and don’t bust

  4. A reach for a quarteback that didn’t win in college. Look a the recent history of QB’s drafted second or third.

    — Rick Mirer (No. 2 pick in 1993): Disaster.
    — Heath Shuler (No. 3 pick in 1994): Disaster.
    — Steve McNair (No. 3 pick in 1994): Good quarterback, led Titans to Super Bowl.
    — Ryan Leaf (No. 2 pick in 1998): Beyond disaster.
    — Donovan McNabb (No. 2 pick in 1999): Very good quarterback, led Eagles to Super Bowl.
    — Akili Smith (No. 3 pick in 1999): Disaster.
    — Joey Harrington (No. 3 pick in 2002): Disaster
    — Vince Young (No. 3 pick in 2006): Not a disaster….Yet
    — Matt Ryan (No. 3 pick in 2008): Looking good.
The Bills needs to build their defense and draft Von Miller. Their offense can score points, they just can’t stop anyone. In their first 6 games they gave up 30 points five times. Defense is what they need.

  5. With their first pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Toronto Bills select Borje Salming…..

  6. xstatic, you honestly think Ryan Fitzpatrick is the guy to take you to the promised land? I understand your rush defense sucks, but you do not have a chance at winning Super Bowls until you get the QB position locked down. It’s the most important position on the football field.

That being said, this smells like a smokescreen or a “Kaepernick is our guy if he’s there in the 2nd round” type deal.

  7. I don’t get it……maybe Cam if he’s available because of the dynamic potential, but they got a QB that is very comparable to Gabbert etc…..

If they do, then one more impact defensive player available for others to take.

  8. This one is obvious… the Bills know that some teams may be desperate to take Gabbert, so they are looking to get maximum value. The Bengals, Cardinals, 49ers, Titans and Redskins all may be interested in a trade up. If they stay put, I would think Von Miller is the obvious choice.

  9. Man, Ryan Fitzpatrick should be their QB. He had a heck of a year last year. I think they need to address other needs like outside linebacker and receiver.

  10. Bills will trade back into the bottom of the 1st and grab Locker.
They will assuredly take Miller or Peterson. (though Peterson will probably go to Panthers at 1)

  11. So in honor of the fact that every year all the predictions about the draft are wrong, I want to predict something…

The Panthers won’t take a QB and it’s going to cause a chain reaction of QB’s slipping. There will only be maybe 2 taken in the first 20 picks, and then towards the end of the first, start of the 2nd, they all come off within about 10 picks. But like I said, all the predictions are wrong anyways.

  12. “If the Bills do draft a quarterback, it will be either Auburn’s Cam Newton or Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert. At the moment it appears that Newton will go first overall to the Panthers and Gabbert will still be available”

    Addendum…

If they draft a QB “in the first round”…

  13. Has to be a total smokescreen, I think he is saying with that comment that they want Marcellus Dareus and hope someone trades up to Denvers position to get him. Cam Newton to Panthers 1st pick, Blaine Gabbert second to (Arizona, Cincinatti, Tennessee), then Dareus falls to them at number three, where they don’t believe he will land unless a someone trades with Denver.

Our run defense is 32nd ranked and this moron wants to draft a QB. this better be a smokescreen or I’ll take a crap on his front porch

Your run D will improve a lot if you get an offense that might get you the lead in a game or 2.

  15. Smokescreen. All the teams not intending to take a QB early are hoping others will, so better positional players drop to them. That’s why there are so many teams talking about QB and the media repeats it as news. I think 3 QB’s go in round one (Gabbert, Newton, Mallet), and 4 more in round 2 (Ponder, Locker, Kaepernick, Dalton), which still represents some “reaching”. The best way to stay lousy is to reach to fill needs, passing up on better prospects.
