Falcons tied to receivers as draft approaches

When coming up with Atlanta’s team needs for the draft — we wrapped up the series on Saturday — wide receiver ranked second on the Falcons’ list.  Matt Ryan needs another speed option to throw to.

It’s no surprise, then, that the Falcons continue to be tied to receivers in the buildup to the draft.  D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution “keeps hearing” that the Falcons love Troy wideout Jerrel Jernigan.

“If he’s still there at No. 59, they likely won’t waste much time turning in his card,” Ledbetter writes.

ESPN.com’s Pat Yasinskas believes Jernigan and Titus Young could be options for Atlanta in the second round.  If the Falcons don’t want to wait, they could use their first-round pick at the position.

“I’ve been hearing the names of [Torrey] Smith and [Jonathan] Baldwin connected to the Falcons a lot in the past week or so,” Yasinskas writes.

Baldwin is an intriguing prospect that could be an upgrade from Michael Jenkins with a little seasoning.  Whether the Falcons take him or not, it’d be a surprise if they don’t wind up drafting a receiver Thursday or Friday.

  1. Ha ha ha the Failcons are going to focus on receivers and their defense is going to be shredded again like it was against the vastly superior Packers. Can’t wait!

  2. They definitely need a compliment to Roddy White. Especially with Tony G and Turner on the decline. This offense will need some more weapons to compete with the quick-strike offenses like GB, Philly, and NO.

  3. I’m from North Carolina. I’d love for my team to win as many games as the Falcons do. I do, however, believe Steve Smith has a fine future waiting for him in the boxing ring. Or the MMA ring.

  4. I doubt they use a 1st rounder on a WR, but would tend to agree that one in the 2nd round is a high probability. My hope is that Kerrigan, Clayborne or possibly even Bowers falls to them in round 1 (Clayborne being the most likely).

Another scenario would be to grab either Jimmy Smith or Aaron Williams in the 1st hope a decent DE falls to them in the 2nd (Bailey out of the U or Sheard from Pitt) and then grab a WR in the 3rd (maybe Randal Cobb or Aldrick Robinson).
