Bills fire longtime personnel executive Tom Modrak

AP

Buffalo announced the firing of Tom Modrack Wednesday after he served the team for 10 years, having a big say in personnel.

Hired in 2001, Modrak’s title changed from Director of Football Operations to Assistant General Manager to his most recent title as Director of College Scouting, which he held since 2007.  He’s been in the NFL 34 years.

“This is the time of year when we evaluate every element of our football operation and with the Draft now completed, we have decided to reorganize our personnel department,” said Bills G.M. Buddy Nix.

The timing of the move is a bit of a surprise, if only because Nix chose to keep Modrak a year ago when he took the job.  Modrak worked for the Steelers for a long time before working as the Director of Football Operations for the Eagles from 1998-2001.

  1. The timing makes perfect sense — right after the draft gives them the longest period of time to replace him in time for the next draft. It is hardly unheard of for personnel guys to get fired around this time.

  2. Fired the draft guy after the draft. Makes more sense than firing the draft guy before the draft when he can divulge all your secrets.

Should have been fired a long time ago. The Bills have been pathetic for years

  4. Finally!

Let’s take a look at Buffalo’s 1st round picks, since Modrak has been head of scouting:

2002 – Mike Williams – one of the biggest busts ever
2003 – Willis McGahee – was never better than average. Already had Travis Henry.
2004 – Lee Evans – fast, but totally mediocre.
2004 – Traded up for JP Losman – Really???
2006 – Donte Whitner – Totally average. Hardly worth the 8th overall pick. Passed on Ngata.
2006 – Traded up for John McCargo. Horrible. Should have just taken Ngata when they had the chance.
2007 – Marshawn Lynch – They finally got one right (too bad he was run out of town).
    2008 – Leodis McKelvin – Decent
2009 – Aaron Maybin – Almost as big of a bust as Mike Williams. Won’t be in the league much longer. Passed on Orakpo and Clay Matthews.
2009 – Eric Wood – Finally, a productive player in the 1st round.

  5. I think the timing makes sense. Keep him till the draft and then let him leave after they are done drafting for the season.

  6. Thank you Buddy Nix! I wondered how Modrak kept his job after Donahoe got fired for botching the draft year after year. (Go back and look at the last 8-10 drafts by the Bills, it makes me cringe to see how many times we’ve horribly missed with high picks.) Seems like the personnel guy should have been booted out the door at the same time.

Better late than never, I suppose. Now hire someone good to replace him! Let’s begin the rise back to respectability!

  7. @iamtalkingsolistenandlearn,

True, but aside from that ST coach, everything about the coaching and front office staff has been awful to mediocre.

  8. McGahee, Evans, Witner, Lynch, McKelvin and Wood are all good players. I would say he was batting about .500 for the first round which is about average.

The McCargo, Losman and Maybin picks are ultimately what probably cost him his job.

  9. The Bills franchise is such a joke. In typical loser fashion they make a move 3-4 years after it should’ve been done.

Maybe next year they will actually draft a QB or a legit offensive tackle!

  10. “It’s spring”, said Buddy, “we went through the shelves and tossed out all the stuff that wasn’t being used or was way past it’s best before date.”.

  11. Great move. This should have been done last year when Nix and Gailey came aboard. Get ready Bills fans, we are finally on our way back to the top!!

    Go Bills!!!

  12. Finally! Finally! Finally! I call for a flash mob in front of 1 Bills Drive!!!!!!!!!! You should have been out long ago Tommy Boy!

  13. As a long suffering Bills fan it’s great to see Buddy Nix finally doing things that need to be done. Let Whitner and his $8 million/year contract demand, decent drafts, and thisngs are getting better.

  14. A draft that the national media thinks was good, new jerseys to be unveiled soon and Modrak fired. This is as exciting as it has been to be a Bills fan in a long time.

  15. It looks like Modrak is being made out to be the scapegoat.
Wasn’t Buddy on staff when the Bills drafted that human punching bag Aaron Maybin?
Didn’t Buddy draft CJ Spiller when there were two 1000 yard rushers already on the roster? Then the Bills didn’t use Spiller?!?!?
How did the rest of the picks go? A bunch of sh*t from non AQ schools who barely sniffed the field….and Modrak was the problem?
How does Buddy explain not drafting a LT/RT, an edge rusher or a QB when those are the 3 positions that the Bills haven’t been able to fill in 10+ years!!??
Instead they draft 3 dbs and a RB!?!? Great Buddy, you are no better than the prior regimes.
The only move that you’ve made that was a good one is Chan and now Dareus (I’m suprised that you didn’t eff that one up but he litterally fell in your diapered lap).
Same ol, same ol at OBD. Maybe when the new unis come out, they can put “Ineptitude” across the front!

    WHOOOOOAAA!!!!! SLOW DOWN THERE!!
    LMAO!!

Ok, you had a decent draft this year, but let’s not get delirious.

The Bills hired Buddy Nix as a scout on January 26, 2009, right before Maybin was drafted. One of the first things Nix said when he became GM was blast the Maybin pick.

So yes, Nix was employed by the Bills when they picked Maybin. But no, he didn’t make the pick.

  18. Its about time…I am a Browns fan from Buffalo so I empathize with Bills fans…This guy was single handedly ruining your franchise…

“One of the first things Nix said when he became GM was blast the Maybin pick.”

Please! Leave the link to the quote where Buddy says that because that’s the first i’ve heard about it.
Plus, he was a national scout for 3 months before the ’09 draft and was active with the Chargers as an assistant GM so he scouted Maybin.
How about the Spiller pick? When other teams had half of their draft starting, the Bills didn’t start one player from the ’10 draft last year.
Like I said, the Bills haven’t had a QB, LT/RT, Edge Rusher or a TE in years. So what do the Bills go out and do, draft 3 DBs and a RB! Great job Buddy! The turnstyles that you employ at tackle will get Fitz killed this year and Brady will be sitting in the pocket all day long….sounds like 2000-2010 to me.

  20. Buffalo Bills pick the year with no football to get better….not sure they’ve turned the corner just yet!!

  21. There must be something about the guy, because I remember when he was with the Eagles, Banner and Lurie brought him in to fire him, and said “give us one reason why we shouldn’t fire you”, after which Modrak explained that the Eagles were 3-13 when he got there and made it to the playoffs ( I believe this was 2001) by this point, etc. and they waited to hear his whole explanation, then fired him anyway. Maybe he’s one of those old school guys that don’t like the owner involved in the football decisions. Andy Reid is much more politic, he always gives Lurie a job to do on draft day.

  22. There have been far too many high draft pick busts with him in charge.

  23. he must have had pictures of Ralph to keep his job for this long. Botched every first round pick (except Eric Wood and he was the 2nd 1st round pick that draft)

  24. First Pegula buys the Sabres, then OBL gets whacked, now this, the last of the Tom Donahoe idjits finally getting shown the door. Good times in NY.

‘Bye Modrak, thank you for the no help. Why don’t you go ruin the Dolphins for a while? (ya jackass…)
