After going undrafted by the NFL, Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich wasn’t a top-50 pick in the UFL’s draft for one big reason: Teams assumed he would pursue an NFL career first.

They were right.

SI.com’s Peter King wrote in MMQB that Herzlich will bypass the UFL and wait for a chance to play in the big leagues first.

(At least he didn’t say: “I’m not going to that shit.”)

It’s the path that the vast majority of high quality undrafted free agents will take initially. Some players will head to the UFL or Canada, but we suspect most of them were extreme longshots in the NFL.

If the lockout continues into August, however, these prospects may start to realize what many college graduates do after graduation: It’s hard to pass up paid work when your dream job isn’t materializing right away.
