Bernard Hopkins rips McNabb, says he’s not black but “got a suntan”

AP

Boxer Bernard Hopkins, a Philadelphia native and longtime Eagles fan, is continuing his bizarre campaign of slamming former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb every chance he gets. And this time Hopkins added an element of race to his usual criticisms.

According to Philly.com, Hopkins described McNabb as not black enough.

“Forget this,” Hopkins said, pointing to his own dark skin. “He’s got a suntan. That’s all.”

The paper reports that Hopkins (who’s talking up a storm to promote his May 21 fight with Jean Pascal on HBO) also made a slavery analogy in discussing McNabb’s relationship with the Eagles.

“Why do you think McNabb felt he was betrayed? Because McNabb is the guy in the house, while everybody else is on the field. He’s the one who got the extra coat. The extra servings. ‘You’re our boy,’ ” Hopkins said. “He thought he was one of them.”

After Hopkins got done ripping McNabb, he said he thinks McNabb is a good person.

“Nice guy. I’d trust him around my kids,” Hopkins said.

I’m sure McNabb will appreciate that.

  1. Gee, whiz…you think Hopkins is going to get the same flame-thrower treatment they gave Rush Limbaugh after he made his never-was-racist remark about D-Mac?

  2. It must be hard when you’re a famous athlete, and then you get old and become irrelevant and you have to say outlandish things to get people to pay any attention to you.

  3. Hopkin’s cracks at McNabb have always been racial. If McNabb had ten kids by nine women, he’d be a true brotha, keepin’ it real. That’s how knucklehead like Hopkins think.

  4. Wow. Really? I mean, really? It’s 2011, right? Or did I just wake up in 1952? Seriously, people, get a life.

  5. Clearly a racist and should never be allowed to be part owner of any franchise.

  6. it has to be a slow news day didn’t Reggie Bush tweet anything today or did Dez Bryant go to the mall or something with his pants hanging of his but or something.

  7. Although I’m never rooting for the teams McNabb plays for, I’m always puzzled that he is always such a target for personal comments and criticism. Just from a humane viewpoint it sucks to see someone as classy as him get bagged on this much. What good does calling him “not black but suntanned” do? Sheeeeeesh.

  8. Stick to boxing Bernard. Donavan was to classy to ever play for the city of Filthy. The Eagles were so bad they were locally blacked out on Tv before Mcnabb came to town. Only the fans of Filthy could embrace Vick. Stay classy Philadelphia.

  9. Im just kinda wondering just how black he needs to be, to be considered black??? *scratching head*

  10. Typical Philly trash. As a black person this is very embarrassing. Why would anyone allow this IDIOT even speak about a man who has been nothing but be the most classy player the NFL has seen in the last 30 years bar none. He doesn’t react to comments like this how most African American men would, and is so well spoken it wouldn’t surprise me for one if he ran for office once his playing career is over. I, for one, hope that Hopkins’ next blow erases his ability to embarrass the black race anymore. Complete piece of trash.

  11. I wish BHop would just quit it. He doesn’t like the man, we get it, have had to hear the same diatribe over and over for years. I did not realize having two employed parents was reflected in a man’s skin color. He really sounds mentally ill when he goes off like this.

  12. “Gee, whiz…you think Hopkins is going to get the same flame-thrower treatment they gave Rush Limbaugh after he made his never-was-racist remark about D-Mac?”

That blowhard deserves any bit of rough treatment he gets. He’s a drug addict too.

  13. I have no great opinion on McNabb one way or the other, but Hopkins is a chump.

He’s nothing but some organ-grinder’s pet monkey who enjoys chattering and flinging his Poo at everyone.

  14. Bernard Hopkins and his racist remarks are PROOF that not ALL Dinosaurs are extinct!!

  15. ndallasruss….. Hopkins might be old but he is far from irrelevant. He has a title fight in under two weeks against Pascal. Fought him a few months back to a majority draw with most thinking he won the fight. He has always made outlandish statements, just who he is. Doesn’t make it right though. Just saying he didn’t say these things to become relevant again, as he is currently very relevant in the boxing world.

  16. Bernard Hopkins = suffered multiple concussions without the protection of a football helmet.

And Bernard — you’re not Irish enough for me.

  17. Mcnabbs a fraud. And let’s face it. Mcnabb had little to do with Philly success. Reid is the genius. He plugged and played for years while 5 was hurt. Isn’t Reid the guy who made aj feeley look so good that Miami gave up a second round pick for him? I think the eagles are the only team on NFL history to use 6 QBs to get to 5 conference championship games under the same regime.

  18. “The Eagles were so bad they were locally blacked out on Tv before Mcnabb came to town”

    Lie. Total lie. Made up.

The last blacked out game I can recall, as someone who actually lives here, is Eagles v Houston Oilers, when Mike Quick broke his leg. That would’ve been 1986?

But keep making stuff up, clown.

  19. Ah, that Tampa game in ’95. Damn. You got one.

    One.

Blackouts are standard operating procedure in most US cities up until the 11th hour – San Diego being the worst.

  20. Hopkins was and always will be an idiot.
Gallag, learn the game. If you think McNabb wasn’t a huge part of the Eagles success, you don’t know football. You’re like Hopkins…you have some weird vendetta against McNabb.

  21. Hopkins – McNabb, Philly, summer of 2012.

Honestly, how much would you pay to see that?

  22. As a white person, this is offensive to me because the implication is that “not being black enough” is akin to being “too white”, which is evidently a bad thing. I expect stupid comments from people who get punched in the head for a living, but this is insulting. Boxing, as a sport, has a Terri Schiavo-like existence, so I suppose any publicity by one of its participants is needed. Hopkins, though, is somehow less intelligent than even I would’ve thought.

  23. “Nice guy. I’d trust him around my kids,” Hopkins said.

    That is a complement.

I wouldnt allow Rahard Mendenhall around my kids, he might trying telling them that aliens built the pyramids, or the Neil Armstrong moon landing was filmed in a movie studio or that Elvis is still alive.

  24. drmonkeyarmy – not to get into a detailed boxing discussion – I’m admittedly not an expert, but look at who Hopkins has fought the last 3 or 4 years.

Winky Wright, Joe Calzaghe, Kelly Pavlik, Enrique Ornelas. These guys are all middleweights who moved up in weight class for the first time to fight him. Add in Roy Jones Jr, who hasn’t been “Roy Jones Jr” since 2003.

If he’s relevant at all in boxing any more, it’s only because there’s no one else – not because of any of his own accomplishments.

That’s all Philly haters ever have, stuff they made up to make it seem like the Eagles aren’t the dominant team of the NFC East in the past decade.

The only fair criticism is that they’ve never won a Superbowl, and really only the Giants have any room to talk on that one (and only because of the flukiest play in NFL history) as the Skins and Boys have teenage fans who weren’t alive to witness any of the SB wins there.

But their hatred just lets us know that they want to be us. So sad for them!

  26. Yeah! What’s the matter with you, McNabb? Sitting there all rich and classy! You ain’t never been to prison or nuthin’! C’mon son, keep it real!!

  27. I can’t wait until the generation of people who continue to think like that die off because they are only hurting society.

Some people shouldn’t be allowed to talk outloud without someone to translate the studidity

  28. Vick was in the “house” once. Got the extra “coat”. Shoot, even had some animals to kick around there for a while.

  29. I wonder whose bank account is fatter?
    Bernards or #5’s

I wonder who went to college and who went to prison?
    Bernard or #5?

Bernard Hopkins doesn’t even have a career while McNabb is set to make atleast 6 figures next season.

    Jealousy

  30. I used to like Hopkins but he is a complete idiot piece of ish for saying this bs. He can go to hell. Mcnabb is a class act by any standards. Who cares where he grew up at

  31. The good news for Donovan is that this means that Albert Haynesworth will consider him for a date.

  32. To all saying who is or Hopkins is nothing, you are idiots.Hopkins is known for defending a world middleweight title a record 20 times. Guy is a real Hall of Fame fighter. Twice the athlete of McRib. He,like many fighters has always ran his mouth to create controversy. Judging by your comments he is still very good at it!

  33. LOLZ, the big media attention is on headshots to football players. They should look at the impact of hits to the head on boxers, starting with Bernard Hopkins.

  34. HOPKINS…..if you hate whites as much as you seem to, how about you don’t take any of the money that comes from WHITIE! He’s just anothe jive ass ****** that plays a race card whenever he can. What would we be reading about if a WHITE person said this?

  35. Not black enough????? That is an ignorant statement if I ever heard one. What does it mean to be black enough mr Hopkins.

Wasnt it Mlkjr who said all men are created equal. Just because he hasnt been to prison like you means he isnt black enough. Each man carves out his own pathway no matter what color they are. You can be a black loser in jail or a black success just like you can be a white loser in jail or a white success.

Seriously you are as dumb as a rock and saying it doesnt help your “street Cred” This isnt the 60s anymore its 2011. Get a life

  36. I wanted to make a Sunny in Philadelphia joke, but someone beat me to it. Well played.

Anyways, I’m sure McNabb is having trouble sleeping at night on his pile of money because some washed-up boxer thinks he isn’t black enough.

  37. Ohhhh myyyy gawwwwd! Again with the Hopkins BS?! Who the heck is this Hopkins and why is his opinion ever relevant in the world of football??????????

    End the lockout! Please!!!!!

  39. Looks like B-Hop got hit in the head a few too many times. Also, what 8 morons disliked the first comment? THIS is news???

  40. @footballkin5:

The constitution said “all men are created equal”.
MLKJR just said he hoped we all live up to the creed.

And for the record all men AREN’T created equal.

  41. I love how a washed up boxer can rip a quarterback that has the ability to make a comeback!!!

  42. Hopkins has hated mcnabb ever since he came to the novacare center years ago and mcnabb didn’t fall all over him and kiss his ass. Funny thing is he always talks about what a big eagle fan he is but all I ever hear him talk about is mcnabb. He’s doesn’t even play in Philly anymore and he’s still talking about him. Ask him who phillys starting left guard is. I bet he couldn’t tell you. If being a nice guy who goes on to play pro football and gets to play in the super bowl (but actually wins) is not being black enough then I hope my son ends up with the same tan mcnabb has

  43. @moochzilla: Actually, I believe the last blackout for the Eagles was at the end of the 1999 season, but the game was actually played on one of the first few days of Jan. 2000, the last day of the regular season. McNabb and the Eagles beat the Rams, who had already locked up a playoff spot, the Eagles finished 5-11, and the Rams went on to win the Supe for Vermeil. As for Hopkins, I don’t think he realizes what a complete idiot he sounds like whenever he recycles this old rant of his, and he’s done it several times.

    ==================================
“And for the record all men AREN’T created equal.”

For the record, that was an idiotic statement. Hitler, Malthus and H.S. Chamberlain would be proud.

I’ll take the framers of the Constitution over your opinion, ANYTIME. All men are created equal then made unequal by a system designed to intentionally do so. (hence, Third World Countries and a “ruling class” that profits from them)

  45. WOW this is one black man slamming another from a period of time we all should get over.

  46. I love how Philly fans rip Mcnabb. He’s the best quarterback the eagles have ever had. Don’t tell me people already think Vick is the best because he’s only had one good year where he missed a few games. Coming from a cowboys fan Donavan was a great quarterback and Philly fans should at least show him some respect

  47. There’s a worthwhile discussion to be had about race, power and the politics of the NFL. I’m pretty sure this isn’t it, though.

  48. @bearsrulepackdrool

Too true. I’m a 5’11, 180 lb white guy. No one is about to say that me and Shaq were created equal. It’s just that all people deserve to be treated as equals, since we are all human beings.

Yes and the class oozing from your handle sir makes these remarks all the more funny.

Hopkins has been hit in the head way to many times. And while i totally disagree with Hopkins, As far as his sport I will always respect him more than McNabb. Hopkins has given his all everytime out and worked his ass off and always loves his fans and his home city back. As far as McNabb goes he never let the draft day booing go.

And this is where my biggest problem with McNabb comes in. Through out his whole time here it was always about him. The guy never seemed to give anyone else credit. But always seemed ready to othrow someone else under the bus. And i think we all should have seen this coming after he was so upset about his draft day. Those fans, while they are morons and were completely wrong, were booing the Team for not picking R. Williams. McNabb took it as they didn’t like him. So it was all about him. There was no way in McNabbs mind that it was about the team and the city wanting a running back, no, it was all about how they hated him. This turned into how it was with McNabb. The city had problems with the passing game because of the recivers and McNabb takes it like they are complaining about him. The fans have a problem with how much Andy throws and McNabb makes public comments hinting that he thinks the city has a problem with HIM throwing to much.

To me what Hopkins says is silly, but I am not black so I won’t even begin to claim i understand what hes talking about. But as a philly guy I will tell you that McNabb made himself a very hard guy to support. If he had just let things go and maybe tlked up his teammates and tryed to not make it all about McNabb so much maybe the fans would like him more.

Oh and what Limbaug said was racist. If a guy who doesn’t make a living race baiting and bullishing on the radio every day had said that, then maybe i would agree it was a good arguement that was wrongly worded. But tht came from a fat racist pill popping piece of crap so my guess is he was trying to pull his radio show racebaiting ratings grab to a pre game NFL show. Not the right place. And pillbaugh is a racist POS, if you don’t think thats true you should put the oxy’s back in the bottle and take down the rebel flag.

  50. i wonder if Bernard Hopkins knows why they put cotton in medicine bottles …

  51. B-Hop was just trying to get his fight out there. But dude you need to move on. Who cares about McNabb? Hes going to be on his 3rd team soon enough. As for the McNabb is classy garbage, stop it. Hes a passive aggressive basket case. I’ve seen him be totally rude and disrespectful to people multiple times. He once ran from 2 kids (one with his jersey on) who wanted his autograph. Hes a creep, just like B-HOP is. The difference is that B-Hop has the heart of a champion. McNabb was carried by Jim Johnson, his defense, and his defensive game planning. McNabb was a solid QB, never great. He isn’t the best QB the Eagles ever had (NVB, The Dutchman was). Oh and stop the talk that all Eagles fans embraced Vick. I’ll admit I’m in the minority but there still are tens of thousands of us Eagles fans who hate this POS.

  52. The nickname “Redskin” was created by an INDIAN!

It was derived from Indian Warriors who would paint their skin in red before a battle.

    Nothing racist about it.

Do a little research before you throw your ignorance about.

  53. First of all Bernard Hopkins is a idiot. Beacause McNabb grew up in the suburbs with both parents and hasn’t been arrested or has 8 children by 7 women he’s not black enough. Hey Bernard if you are the definition of being black why don’t you move your family back to North Philly where according to you the real blacks live. What a terrible message to send to kids that if work hard make sound decisions in life and be responsible for your actions you are rewarded with not being black enough or a sell-out
Yes Bernard you are indeed a JACKASS!

  54. So if Bernard Kopkins says this about McNabb, shouldn’t he move out of his big house in Newark, DE and move to the hood so he can raise his child properly!!!!

  55. The constitution said “all men are created equal”.
MLKJR just said he hoped we all live up to the creed.

FYI it was the declaration of independence (thomas jefferson) not the constitution

When was the last time the ‘9ers were relevant?

    Week 4 – 49ers at Eagles. See ya then…

  57. As a black guy I find this disgusting. I (and many other black men) would kill to have had the upbringing Donovan had with both parents and a stable environment. People like Bernard are why the black community is where it is at today.

I’m no Eagles or Redskins fan but Donovan is a solid guy who has been done wrong throughout his career by the media and Philly fans.

  58. This all started because McNabb blew off Hopkins when he visited the Eagles locker room one time. Hopkins has taken way too many blows to the head and should not be taken seriously. The guy is a clown. McNabb is a good guy and doesn’t deserve these kind of attacks.

  59. “I love how Philly fans rip mcnabb.”
When will people figure out that Philly Fans is not a person? Philadelphia is a big city, with lots of different people and different opinions, but we love our teams. And this article is about an idiot (every city has at least one!). who should not be confused with any real Philly fan. PULEEEZE!

  60. this cat always spews racist chit…he also said Pacquiao should fight slick african american boxers because they would pose the most challenge…wrong.

If a white athlete said this about Donovan all types of folks would get their panties in a bunch..Sharpton, Farahkhan, etc. Enough with the nonsense.

  61. As someone who was “raised” as a child by a brain-damaged black (ex)-boxer from Philly, let me just say that this story doesn’t surprise me. LOL

    ———————-
Yeah!! Like they should give him a standing ovation when he returns to the Linc, right dez?

The load mouth moaners and groaners speak for themselves, not all Eagles fans. Just so we’re clear.

  64. “The nickname “Redskin” was created by an INDIAN! ”

You should watch an interview with one of the team’s best alums Charles Mann.

When asked if he thought it was offensive, he had the best answer I have ever heard on the subject: “It doesn’t matter if I find it offensive, all that matters is if they [Native Americans] find it offensive”.

Great answer, and one we should all adhere to. I gained a lot of respect for Charles that day.

If the group doesn’t find it offensive, as the Seminoles don’t, then OK. But if they do it doesn’t matter what you and I think.

And, yes, I find the image of a stunted, belligerent, clearly drunk Irish lephrauchan to be slightly off-putting as an Irish Catholic!

  65. All I’m saying is that its estimated (since we didn’t keep count) that the US killed more than THREE TIMES as many native americans (not “indians”) as the nazis killed jews. Like, in the 20 million range. Any other country in the world and that’s considered genocide. But, alas, history is written by the victor.

I just try to show some respect for the people we basically wiped off the face of the earth, save for a few caricature sports team logos.

  66. Your all morons! B-HOP is trying to get attention for his fight. Any press is good press. All you people who don’t know who he is should hand in your pants and start wearing skirts. The man was and still is a great fighter. Excellent boxer, with fantastic counter punching abilities, fast reflexes to dodge and move, and the smarts to still be a very good fighter. He should be champion right now but was robbed because of a punch to the back of the head by Jean Pascel in there first fight. It was a very good fight. Pascel is younger, faster, and more powerful but isn’t even close in boxing ability. If B-Hop can make it out of the first 5-6 rounds he should win this fight and become the oldest major Champion in boxing history. If you idiots realized boxing has more then heavy weights, you would see that there are good fights every week. Between non heavy weight boxing and MMA we have a lot of good fighting to watch week in and week out.

  67. What B-Hop said is stupid. He’s been attacking McNabb for the aforementioned Novacare incident for years, he admitted he felt slighted by it. As for lumping Philly fans and the city in with his comments, what the f- is wrong with you scrotum sniffers? If you knew what we were generally thinking (and you don’t, you all just comment based completely off perception), you would know that there has actually been a little backlash around here towards Hopkins. People are sick of him slighting McNabb, especially his character and upbringing. And one more thing, McNabb is not as classy as you think. But because he is so media friendly, everyone defends poor St. Donovan whenever he’s been “done wrong.” Well, Favre got traded late in his career, Steve McNair, and Joe Montana, too. The worst thing you can do to your franchise is to keep around aging, declining players and overpay them. Think about that instead of just assuming he is being treated poorly.
