Government seeks Saints assistant’s 2009 rings

When Saints assistant defensive line coach Travis Jones received a sentence of three years’ probation and 100 hours of community service after pleading guilty to filing two fraudulent loan applications, he also agreed to make restitution in the amount of $1.148 million.

As we said at the time, “Unless being an assistant defensive line coach pays a lot better in New Orleans than elsewhere, it won’t be easy for Jones to raise that money.”

Apparently, it’s not easy to raise the money, and it has prompted the U.S. government to commence an effort to obtain his 2009 NFC title game ring and his Super Bowl XLIV ring.

In an Application for Writ of Execution filed earlier this week, a copy of which PFT has obtained, the prosecution contends that Jones has paid only $3,190, and that he still owes more than $1.145 million, and the prosecution asks for an order permitting authorities to confiscate both rings from Jones.

Meanwhile, we’re now even more confused as to why Jones agreed to $1.148 million in restitution when he was in position to pay only $3,190. We’re also confused as to why the government agreed to a sentence including that amount of restitution when Jones obviously doesn’t have the money to satisfy the debt.
