Thomas Davis practices despite ACL recovery and other Panthers notes

So Cam Newton has impressed everyone during his two weeks working with the Panthers.  While he was the reason ESPN showed up to Panthers practice Thursday, he’s not the only player on the team.

Here a few other Panthers nuggets, courtesy of beat writer in exile Darin Gantt and Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

1. Gantt notes linebacker Thomas Davis was in attendance, which is risky considering Davis coming off his second ACL tear in as many years. Davis doesn’t have a contract, but the Panthers figure to bring him back assuming he stays healthy.

2. Jonathan Stewart was also practicing. This is the first healthy offseason of Stewart’s career; he has almost never participated in minicamps and OTAs because he’s always recovering from a foot injury.  The timing couldn’t be better for the Panthers as Stewart seems likely to take over as the team’s starter with DeAngelo Williams set to be a free agent.

If Carolina is going to surprise teams in 2011, Stewart will be a huge key.  He has the talent to be a 1,500-yard type of runner.

3. Steve Smith was not there on Friday, but did make a guest appearance during the week.

4. Free agents like Williams, Charles Johnson, and Richard Marshall weren’t there. The Panthers have a lot of free agent questions to answer after the lockout.

  1. At least Smitty took the time to at least show up to see the guys… From what was said Cam has been working his tail off. I’m optimistic about the whole thing. I also hope Thomas Davis makes a strong comeback.
We need to keep DeAngelo Williams even though mike goodson did well. I think he’s just too dynamic to let leave. But the most important man to keep on this team is Charles Johnson. We don’t have a pass rush without him. They also need to get Greg Hardy more reps, Everette Brown is not the guy we thought we drafted…

  2. To PANTHER NATION…please feel free to elaborate on this….my biggest fear is NOT that we won’t be a good NFL team fast….cause I believe we will be…. but I am afraid that with this lockout, we won’t be able to gel as fast as some of the veteran teams in our division…and we end up picking tp 10 if not top 5 in 2012. I HATE THIS CRAP!

  3. Ok I like this also I think we will be a better team sooner than most think & a lot of older retired Panthers where at this weeks Player run camp just to help & those are Former Panthers such as Kevin Donnalley, Muhsin Muhammad, Jeff Mitchell, Wesley Walls and Steve Beuerlein have been there helping run it.

& i must say Steve Beuerlein Helping Cam Newton WOW
