July 17 emerges as target for the announcement of a deal

We’ve got no interest in breaking the news that a new labor deal has been finalized.  When it happens, plenty of people will have it within minutes, and within minutes after that it will be officially announced.

But keeping with our mission of sharing with PFT Planet the things we’re hearing from our network of sources, we’re hearing that an agreement in principle, subject to league and court approval, currently is expected to be announced on July 17.

Whether a new deal is announced on July 17 is a separate question.  The story for now is that July 17 has emerged as the potential target.

Like every other aspect of the lockout story (which is about to cause Drew Magary’s heart and/or head to explode and/or implode), this one is subject to change.  And change it probably will.

  1. **Insert comment “from someone who has absolutely no idea what’s going on in these negotiations claiming that they “predicted” the lockout would end on the 17th” here

  2. Assuming that a deal IS announced on or about July 17th, all this proves is what we’ve speculated all along……that there was no urgency at all to get a deal done until there was a real threat of games being missed and revenue lost. Nothing short of that matters.

It will be interesting to see if there are more injuries than usual in training camps this year because of the lockout.

  3. Well, I’m sure De is frantically calling all the players to let them know that July 17th is completely unrealistic.

    What?

  5. I think I speak for the majority when I say “Get it DONE”!!!

(or should that be “Git ‘er Doooooone”?! LOL

  6. YES!!!

I would’ve typed this sooner, but I was too busy jumping up and down celebrating!

  7. Don’t kid yourself Mike, when the deal gets done your not going to be able to type fast enough.

  8. My lottery numbers will hit by 2099, but I’m not buying tickets that far in advance.

  9. Contradictory article to follow shortly. Manage your expectations accordingly

  10. But keeping with our mission of sharing with PFT Planet the things we’re hearing from our network of sources

    change your mission please

  11. I think you have things mixed up, Mike. July 17 is the day that Favre is expected to announce his comeback.

  12. No way, they take off the weekends, it would have to be a Thursday or friday lol

  13. Isn’t this EXACTLY what you were complaining about Schefty and Mort doing?

Throwing out an unsourced date so that you have the scoop and then immediately backing off that date to keep your butt covered for when nothing happens?

  14. First, it’ll be the 17th. Then the 21st again. Then the 30th. Then the 7th of August. Then the 15th of August, and that is when we will finally have a deal.

Feel free to prove me wrong, though. Please.

  15. Don’t hold your breath. The next headline will be about how no progress was made and talks nearly broke down. I can already see it. Then, they will be throwing out new dates and false predictions. Hooray!!!

  16. “Doesn’t some judge who is currently on a vacation have a mediation meeting scheduled for July 19?”

The meeting will still take place…..except it will be a wrap party 🙂

  17. This really puts a crimp in my idea that Antonio Cromartie will have another kid before the NFL and the players actually come up with a new CBA.

  18. This date changes more than the end of the world prediction date… beat it with all these updates about nothing..

  19. Where are you getting this from? Let me guess, the media. We want to know when the owners and players think a deal will be done. Not the media, not just the owners, and not just the players…owners and players.

  20. Next article will be about some unidentifed “source”, with knowledge of the inner workings of the secret negotiations, saying that July 17 is unrealistic because they can not agree on the number of cleats allowed on a shoe. This will be blamed on the owners trying to save money by wanting less cleats, which would result in more player injuries. The owners will counter by saying they are trying to protect players by reducing the number of cleat related injuries.

  21. How dare the NFL interfere with the Casey Anthony release date!? They made me have to be interested in other forms of news and this is how they repay me??

  22. Im over dates , i will no longer believe any i hear .. They just need to get a effin deal done , my eyes are tired from reading all these dates !

  23. De-moron Fedora boy will quickly squash those rumors by the time I eat dinner tonight. He knows his job is lost when this is all said and done

  24. Not a big surprise. It is getting close to when someone will start to lose money (ie cancel the HOF game, etc). So that is about July 17. No one wants to start losing money. It will change the deal.

And announcing this on a Sunday? Why is that so unusual? After all, they play football on Sunday!

  25. Deal/No Deal – further proof that Boylan left Favre to mediate on his behalf whilst vacationing.

Read the fine print gentleman – they didn’t say July 17th of what year…

  26. Anything, please, to eliminate the fact that women’s soccer is dominating the sports world. Women’s soccer??? This is what it’s come to?

  27. Twiddling my thumbs and waiting until I read an article tomorrow that says “Expect the deal to be done on July 18th”
It will read: The latest news coming out is that July 17th is a Sunday and the 18th is a more likely date for the deal to be reached.
    What a joke…

  28. If I act excited, I will get thumbs down :(! If I act pessimistic or sarcastic, I will get thumbs up :)! I want to get thumbs up but I also want to be excited. I’m torn!

  29. Favre should totally steal the league’s thunder and announce his ‘return’ in a teary press conference the same day…

  30. Be understanding. The negotiators for the players have to drag this out so it looks like they fought hard, once the players see how much pie is gone from their portion.

  31. Ill Believe it once a press conference occurs but until then let the paint continue to dry.

  32. Casey Anthony is getting out of jail and going straight over to the NFL Network to make the public announcement that the lockout is over and that she is the new sideline reporter for Monday Night Football.

  33. DeMo will do something to screw up any tentative deal, before or after the 17th. There is no chance to finalize a deal with him still involved.

  34. Good, I’ll be on vacation that week far from any news sources.

I really just dont care anymore to be honest.

I agree. He will announce it as “the worst deal in the history of sports and declare total war on the NFL.” I don’t trust him as far as I could throw him.

  36. Great….. now we have to hear about how the Jets are going to the SB again, and how the Cowboys are just so great. Think I would rather hear a lockout story….although I do get a good laugh from the jetcowboy predictions. They’ll be big losers again this year for sure.

  37. I knew NCAA Football 12 would keep me diverted long enough for good news! This coming when only the lawyers were participating. I like it.
