Derrick Mason gets the axe too

We should probably wait ten minutes to write this post, because the Ravens may cut another big name before we’re done.

After dropping Kelly Gregg, Willis McGahee, and Todd Heap, word has leaked out that the Ravens have also cut Derrick Mason per Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun.

This is the most surprising cut yet. The Ravens are clearly dead set on getting younger, faster, and cheaper.  Mason gained over 800 yards last year, but he was well paid for a 37-year-old player.  We wonder if he’ll consider retirement after flirting with it last year.

Baltimore suddenly has a big hole at wide receiver with T.J. Houshmandzadeh unlikely to be back.  They have Anquan Boldin, rookie Torrey Smith, and a veteran to be named later.  Carolina’s Steve Smith would make an intriguing target.

  1. Wow. If he doesn’t re-sign for cheaper pay, and doesn’t retire, then that’s a solid pick up for a team needing a veteran presence on wide receiver.

  2. Considering that Mason was one of the players who acted like a 13 year old with his comments on Goodell, he got what he deserves!

  3. I don’t know what they’re doing, but it looks like they’re making room for something big. Nnadmi maybe?

  4. Tough to see such good and classy players go. D. Mase was a real pro as was Todd Heap. Props to the Ravens for being the classy team that actually gives these players the best opportunity to find the team that best fits them. Gonna get a lot of hate from Steelers/other “fans” (who previously no doubt said these players weren’t any good but will now change their tune), but the bad news for them is that this almost certainly means the Ravens will be aggressively looking to re-sign Marshall Yanda, potentially a right tackle, and/or Steve Smith, Sidney Rice, or Santonio Holmes. Dagger.

  5. Wow. Clearly, the Ravens had a plan for the end of the lockout. They better get some real nice targets for Flacco, or else they’ll start looking like Billick’s team again on offense.

  6. DUMBEST MOVE by the Ravens thus far. And hey, they’ve had some dumb ones. But this takes the cake. Yes, this is worse than Kyle Boller.

Please just cut Ed Reed so I can be done with this team and join all those who enjoy watching the coaching staff and offense choke year after year.

  7. Steelers fan here. I’m shocked that Mason and Heap are released. They’re great players who are the core of that offense. Best of luck to them.

  8. Heap was a Steeler killer! Glad he is gone! Get Steve Smith because he only shows up against bad teams and disappears in big games. Also go after Santonio “wake and bake” holmes! Ed Reed and Holmes woudl get along just fine…

  9. All these cuts are surprising; yes. But to imply they may be interested in Steve Smith in the same post that you claim they are “dead set on getting younger, faster, and cheaper”? LOL

    Come on guys!

  10. @ watermelon

Please be done now. We don’t need garbage fans like you who think they could do the GM’s job from their armchair.

  11. If you look where Anquan Boldin’s season last year started trending downward it was when Mason started crying about a lack of touches.

I think the FO felt like Flacco was forcing the ball to Mason. Need to get your best the receiver the ball and that’s Anquan Boldin

  12. I just hope he doesn’t become a Ram…he may be old, but he can play and the Rams are desperately seeking solid wide-outs. Clayton worked out well for the Rams before he got hurt.

  13. GREAT moves by the Ravens. All four of these guys are past their primes, and we need to make room for younger, faster players. To that idiot up there, Ray Lewis may be getting slower, but his leadership is unquestioned, and still puts up productive numbers. Ozzie has something big planned, whether its Nnamdi Asomugha or Santonio Holmes, just watch.

    In Oz We Trust.

  14. It won’t just be Baltimore that does this all the overpaid dead weight even productive overpaid guys are going to be cut from every team. It’s a buyers market with this many Free Agents and every GM knows it!

  15. “Dear Ravens,

Ray Lewis is taking up too much salary, you may want to get rid of him too.

    Steelers Nation”

Is there anything more annoying than when fans of a team refer to themselves as a “nation”?

  16. As a huge Ravens fan I have to say I like these moves. I love Heap and Mason and will miss them, but there time is done.

Now let’s go out and get some players!

  17. Are the Ravens done? So far they have cleared 18.6 mil in cap space along with the 5.33 mil espn said they are under the cap spells nnamdi and steve smith

  18. Wow! Talk about cleaning house…..Bring in the maid.

Guess they gotta get some new players to try and beat the steelers.

It wont be one of our ex-steelers Holmes. Sorry Raven fans.

  19. @watermelon1 -the beginning of your post is so ironic, because it’s the DUMBEST POST I’ve ever seen! Please find another team. You’re a moron.

As to the moves: Kelly Gregg has been a warrior, but they have his replacementS …yes, plural…Todd Heap has been an oft-injured stud & great guy…but they have his replacementS…yes, plural. Willis Macgahee has been a nice player. Nothing spectacular, and sometimes inconsistent. His contract was way too high for ’11. They believe they have his replacement (and don’t be surprised if his name is LeRon McClain who we all know can carry the rock). D Mase is a tough one, but we need someone to stretch the field. They’re not going to bank on T Smith. Steve Smith? Maybe. I assume they sign a speedy veteran receiver, keep McClain (if they don’t keep him, look for Vonte Leach and C Peerman at backup to Rice) & Yanda…and then what do they do??? I’d like to see a solid pass rusher (Osi?) or corner (Namdi?)…we shall see…

  20. Something big is coming…. Like Nnamdi and Ray Edwards or Nnamdi and Sidney Rice big….

    Ed Reed> Troy Polamalu

Yea, which is a terrible thing for their team when they don’t look like Billick’s team on defense.

  22. I realize that this is the result of having a salary cap lower than 2009 (and an uncapped 2010) but he release of Mason and Heap seems nuts to me.

If you gice Flacco a letter grade of an A or B rated QB; he’s easily a B or C without these two.

  23. The axe man is swinging in B’more. This will definately make it the Joe Flacco show. Who is the veteran W.R. to be named later ?

  24. @ screechingllama, the Ravens were already under the cap.

@danrooneyii, could you back up your statement with some type of facts ? Didnt think so because there aren’t any.

  25. whats up with the steve smith talk? the one from carolina is not a FA and carolina is not going to give him up for nothing. believe that!

  26. The Ravens also drafted Tandon Doss and they’ve got David Reed from last years draft that they really like. They also signed James Hardy. They’ve got wr’s. The problem is that outside of Boldin they are all unproven but I guess they’ve got to get these guys on the field sometime. Now appears to be it.

Heap is the most startling and as a Ravens fan its much more heartbreaking. Unlike Reed, Heap’s backups actually had a shot to step up and push Heap off the roster because he missed 3 games. They couldnt do it. The Ravens need Heap. And if they know whats good for them they will get him back. I am not ready to retire my 86 jersey.

  27. Mase is reasonably healthy and can still play. If he doesn’t retire, he will be a valuable addtion to most any team that signs him.
