Ed Reed to Hines Ward: You’re a dirty player

Getty Images

With heavy indications that Monday will be the day the lockout officially dies, we can finally look forward to football battles being held on the field by men in uniforms instead of by guys wearing suits in the courtroom or conference room.

One of the things we’re looking forward to the most is the resumption of hostilities between the Ravens and Steelers. Their games in recent years — both regular season and playoffs — have been hard fought and entertaining. Off the field, they’ve made sure to cultivate a healthy amount of animosity that has only made the buildup to their games that much more enjoyable.

The lockout did nothing to cool off any bad feelings. Ray Rice and Ryan Clark spent some time stoking the fires in recent weeks and now Ravens safety Ed Reed has joined the fray. Reed isn’t the first to share the opinion that Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward is a dirty player, but he is one of the first to tell the world that he’s said as much directly to Ward.

“I love Hines as a player and I told him that,” Reed said. “But I told him also for a long time, ‘You’re a dirty player because I know how you play.'”

This isn’t the first time Reed has leveled these kinds of accusations in Ward’s direction. In the last regular season game between the teams in December, Reed felt that Ward tried to “cheap-shot” him by blocking him with the crown of his helmet. Ward was not penalized or fined for the play in question.

Reed also said that he tries to play the game in a different way than Ward because he doesn’t try to hurt people. The NFL hasn’t always agreed with Reed’s magnanimous ways, including a $10,000 fine for a hit to Drew Brees’s head late last season.

The lines of this particular debate have been drawn for some time now and there aren’t likely to be many people changing their own opinion about Ward based on Reed’s comments. It is just a little more fodder for the first 2011 meeting of the teams which is, happily enough, scheduled for the first weekend of the season.

With the overnight developments in the labor situation, that day feels a lot closer than it looks on the calender.

  1. This is like when my uncles argue over who makes the best BBQ……No one really cares, but them….

  2. “I love Hines as a player and I told him that,” Reed said. “But I told him also for a long time, ‘You’re a dirty player because I know how you play.’”

Soooooo, Ed Reed loves that Hines Ward plays dirty? I’m confused.

  3. Ward is the classic if he’s on you’re team you love him and don’t think he plays dirty kind of guy. But if he’s not on your squad, you hate him and think he’s a dirty player.

  4. Hines is so deep into Ed’s head it’s laughable. Reed’s always got one eye out for Hines that’s why he never shows up in the Steeler/Ravens games. Check the stats, Reed might as well stay home when the Ravens & Steelers play.

  5. You know to be such a “tough” team, the Ravens have a really pathetic culture of crying…if it wasnt Bart Scott (when he was there) it was Ray Lewis, if it wasnt Lewis it was Suggs, if it isnt Suggs it is Mason, if it isnt Mason its Reed, if it isnt Reed its Flacco, if it isnt Flacco its Harbaugh, if it isnt Harbaugh its Steve Bisciotti…the NFL is clearly out to get this franchise

  6. Called out, Hines slapped leather, whipped out his long barreled Colt and plugged the varmit. Right thar on the dusty street. Tipped his Stetson to the ladies, and rode off into the sunset.

  7. Oh Ed,
You really don’t have to fear Ward on the field, you need only be worried if you’re driving in front of him after he finished tying one on.

  8. I remember one game when the Steelers were playing the Jaguars, and on one key play in the end zone, Hines Ward grabbed the Jag defensive back’s hand and acted out pass interference. The ref had a bad angle and threw the flag, but replay showed clearly what Ward had done.

He does a lot of cheap stuff like that.

  9. @ aldashex86

Actually, this could be contrued as an illegal hit because Ward ducks his head and the first contact is to Reed’s chin with the top of his helmet. He then follows through high with his arms (hands to the face?). Plus, in a 35-7 game, you would think that a veteran would have some respect for his union brother because, ya know, of the safety concerns they all have for each other.

I’m no fan of either team, but this is a borderline hit. The one hit I think Ward gets unduly criticized for is the hit on the Cincy LB (Rivers). That to me was a legal hit. Keep your head on a swivel dude!

  10. Hines is absolutely the dirtiest player in the NFL, after seeing all the retire players not even able to walk or having serious memory losses, seeing someone like Ward deliberately trying to hurt people is just low. I understand it’s a physical game, but even a 5 year old kid could hurt you by hitting you when you’re not looking. He is the master of cheap shots. No place for that, that’s not what the NFL is about. Not to pick on the Steelers, but Kemoeatu is anoter dirty cheap shot Sob, I hate what he does after the whistle

  11. “Steelers WR Hines Ward was voted the NFL’s dirtiest player in a poll of his peers by Sports Illustrated. The magazine surveyed 296 players, and Ward drew 11.6% of the vote.”

Ed Reed’s not the only one who thinks this! UPTHEHINES Ward is a cheap shot artist and one day he’ll get his pay back…….hopefully the first week of the season, if he’s not in court then for his DUI!!!!

  12. Best rivalry no doubt. However, I’m partial to the Ravens simply because of that fat piece of crap QB Pitt has and Heinze Wards annoying smile.

  13. A lot of people see Hines as a dirty player, which he is not. I think its just that wide receivers are generally divas and they are not used to seeing one block and hit as he does.

  14. Kudos on giving us such a provocative headline only to tell us Ed loves Hines. What opposing defenders don’t love is that Hines hits back. Receivers aren’t supposed to do that … kind of like safeties who catch more balls than the receiving corps 😉

As a Steelers fan, Hines is my guy, but I love both of them.

  15. I love it when defensive guys cry when they get hit.. can’t wait til Hines knocks him again. Ed Reed fears a wide receiver… thats right a wide receiver

  16. Reed is washed up, talking smack is all he’s able to do now with his gimpy neck.

  17. Hines is now best at taking Cheap Shots on the field — AS WELL AS – taking Cheap Shots of Booze and getting behind the wheel — yeah, he’s a real upstanding guy.

  18. Ed Reed SOFT???? what a moron… the man has been playing with a neck impingement for years that could end his career with one wrong hit and he STILL knocks the crap out of ballcarriers… Hines is dirty… and all you Squealer fans that defend him are just as dirty and idiotic as he is… i have personally watched from lower level 50yd line in Baltimore AND Pittsburgh and have seen first hand the damage he can do COMPLETEY AWAY FROM THE BALL… they even made a RULE named after him… WHAT OTHER PROOF DO YOU NEED?!?!?! he is single handedly the dirtiest player in the NFL and he also gets away with the most! FORGET YOU HINES! and FORGET YOU people who defend him… fans like you are the REASON people get into fights… CUZ YOU DON’T THINK

  19. Hines Ward to Ed Reed: Hey Mr. I missed 10 games in the last two seasons, you have to actually play more than a few games before making that comment.

  20. What’s Reed whining about? Ward got the penalty on their typical early-game scrum when it clearly should have been thrown on both players.

It’s the kind of battle you’d love to see both of them talking about on NFL Films 10 years from now. I have a world of respect for Ed Reed, so does Ward, that’s why he goes after him. It’s good, hard football between the two of them.

  21. its funny how Goodell doesnt penalize Hines for his cheap shots on defensive players.

  22. Without helmet-to-helmet cheap shots, Hines Ward has no business even playing football. The guy has made a career out of being an absolute goon, and any Steelers fan is lying to themselves if they say that they would like him were he a not a Steeler.

Overrated and cheap. That will be how I will always remember Hines Ward.

I also very much enjoyed watching the Packers beat he and his teammates on the biggest stage.

    Packers: 1, Hines Ward: 0.

    ______________________________

Meanwhile, Ed Reed is one of the most talented safeties to ever play football, and he did that through God-given talent, not by being cheap.

  23. ncoolong…. DID YOU NOT SEE HINES jack Ed ILLEGALLY before he retaliated??? fines don’t go to both players because of that… they go to the player that initially made the illegal deed… go watch again

  24. What’s up with Ed Reed? He has been relatively silent in comparison to his teamates. I guess 0 and 3 in the playoffs against the Steelers makes him grumpy.

I seen Hines make a LEGAL pancake block and Ed Reed get mad and grab Hine’s facemask and Hines grab his back….what did I miss?

  27. Let’s face it:

1.) Santonio Holmes other foot still hasn’t touched down.

2.) James Harrison was the clear-cut MVP of the Steeler’s last Super Bowl win.

3.) Without their linebackers and Polamalu, the Steelers would be the Chargers, minus the offensive prowess.

  28. Ward is a dirty player, and he has been fined a lot more times than Ed has.

The 10K fine Ed got last year was not a cheap shot on Brees at all, he just touched his helmet while going for a strip sack. This year that would not likely even be a penalty.

Ward is constantly looking to hit guys with the crown of his helmet while they are not looking. The NFL changed the rules because of Hines Ward’s cheap shots.

  29. @raven4life21

I seen Hines make a LEGAL pancake block and Ed Reed get mad and grab Hine’s facemask and Hines grab his back….what did I miss? Look it up on you tube. Hines Ward Ed Reed fight. Hines puts ed on his back (as usual) Ed Reed grabs his facemask, Hines pushes his, 3 Ravens have to pull Hines off of Ed.

    ____________________________________

This is the argument I simply do not understand. I love seeing a big hit in football. But the reason Hines is considered dirty by everyone that doesnt root for Pittsburgh (and some that do root for Pittsburgh) isnt because he hits hard from a position not known for having hard hitters, its because he never uses his shoulder to deliver a knock out hit. The youtube video that was posted above, if you ask me, yes that is dirty. Hines could have used his shoulder to blow up Reed, but he chose to use the top of his helmet into Reed’s facemask. The hit on Rivers (Cinci) was also mentioned above, again I say, Ward had the option of using his shoulder, but instead put the top of his helmet into Rivers’ jaw. No one thinks Ward is dirty because he lights guys up, hell I think everyone can appreciate a receiver playing the game that way. People say Hines is dirty because of the tactics he employs. When given the choice of A) lowering his shoulder into an opponents chest, or B) putting his helmet underneath an opponents face mask, Ward chooses helmet to chin every time, that is dirty football. And the intent behind those hits is to injure. Maybe that is taught in Pittsburgh, since he isnt the only Steelers player to have that reputation

  33. I hate the Steelers and Ward but hopefully Reed isnt basing his “dirty player” opinion on that particular play (on the video). It looks like Reed just got blown up–point blank end of story. And memo to the Ravens –stop crying and making excuses and just beat the Steelers.

    ================================

ummm…he led the league in interceptions LAST YEAR after only playing in a little more than HALF of his teams games. I bet all of the other teams in the NFL would want a “washed up” safety like that…

Shouldn’t you go back to needlepoint, or some other hobby you’re good at?

  35. Call Hines Ward dirty is like calling the sky blue.

That is if the sky was a weepy alcoholic korean boy anyhow.

  36. Hines Ward does a cheap shot or two…or three, Bur he is one tough SOB and can play for me any day!!!

  37. I wonder if Reed was ever compensated by his teammates for injuring another player. Bounties are par for the course in Baltimore, where it’s almost impossible to find someone working for that organization who doesn’t whine and complain at every opportunity. Starting with their head coach.

Reed has taken plenty of cheap shots in his career. He’s just pissed that he has to absorb hits from the offensive guys.

    – and was promptly arrested by sheriff Colt McCoy for RUI (riding under the influence) and was never to be heard from again.

  39. I don’t know about any of you, but I would much rather have this type of talk and get ready for the big opening game match up between these 2 huge rivals, than to read and hear about the lock out! It’s FINALLY football season!! I’ll take Hines on my team any day. WOOO HOOO!!

    GO STEELERS!!

  40. Us here in Baltimore… or should i say “Bawmer”? lol… do not call players dirty because they hit hard…. cuz guess what? The Ravens will hit you even harder! it’s not about the hard hitting… it’s about HOW you are hitting… illegal elbows to the head… using the crown of your helmet to inflict pain instead of doing it the right way… in NO WAY do ANY of the Ravens fear Hines… but they DO however have to keep an eye on their blindside for an illegal hit that for some crazy reason the Refs never see (but when do they EVER get stuff right to begin with, i think both sides can agree to that one) so bottom line… Hard Hitting??? BRING IT! Hines Ward… FORGET YOUUUU!

  41. A Baltimore Raven saying that a Pittsburgh Steeler is a dirty player….

in other news, water is wet.

  42. Ward is probably a dirty player. He looks to block players who won’t see him coming, with the intent to take them out. I don’t really have a problem with that but he does lead with the helmet most of the time and if its illegal defenders to tackle receivers that way, it should be illegal for receivers to block a defenders in the same manner

  43. @ravens4life

Santonio Holmes was down, Harrison made one of if not maybe the most exciting play in the history of the Super Bowl. And if I can remember correctly, it was Roethlisberger and the offense that drove down the field and put up 6 to win the game, not the linebackers and Polamalu.

  58. Deb/Steelers faithful:

What I’m doing, is ensuring that the rest of the NFL’s fans know exactly how full of themselves you Steelers fans are.

You people have always acted in such a biased fashion towards your Steelers it’s sickening.

I’m a fan of the Green Bay Packers, but I don’t believe we’re greater than any team ever, because, you see, I’m not on the team, football players are. I root for them, yes, but I don’t hold them to some infallible status-level, wherein they would NEVER drink-and-drive, commit sexual assault, or do wrong in any sense of the word.

Your bias runs so deeply, as I insinuated above, were a player of yours, say, James Harrison, as a Cleveland Brown, for example, to level Steelers WR Mike Wallace, the way he did a defensless Mohammad Massoquoi last year, you would want him kicked out of the league, or at the very least, horribly penalized.

Further, football is a sport. Sports are about competition, not hitting a player with a cheap shot when he is not looking, or when he is unable to defend himself.

Playing on a professional sports team in Pittsburgh is no different than playing on a professional sports team in any other city.

You see, I realize the PEOPLE I root for, are just that, people, and further, I realize that the success garnered by these people in the realm of their sport does not, and will never, make the community that calls them their team any better because of it.

In other words, hop off your proverbial high horse, and get over yourselves, because the rest of the country is so damn sick of your city’s constant, everpresent self-righteousness.

Also, Deb is awful. Thanks for your time.

  59. I see your Still Bitter about Hines Ward Laying you on your ass “huh” Ed Reed.
Man up and take it like a man you little sissy. Didnt expect that coming from a defensive player like reed. You dont see Troy Polamalu crying about things of this nature. Hines plays the game the way its supposed to be played. Physical.

  60. If Hines is deep in Ed Reeds head…. then Ed Reed is in EVERY OFFENSIVE PLAYERS HEAD PERIOD! as well as Ray Lewis… case in point… the Top 100 List voted by the only people that matter THE PLAYERS… When you are on offense, who are the two defenders you DO NOT wanna go against the most that are on the same team… you guessed it… Ray Lewis and Ed Reeeeed… eat it up Squealers….

  62. @gregjennings85 …

Well, I’m just sure the rest of the league appreciates you explaining Steelers fans to them because they’re incapable of deciding to hate us on their own 🙄

As for your hatred of me … that’s total bull. I posted condemnation of Harrison’s hit on Massaquoi, condemned his disrespectful comments of the league, and called for him to be suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. I condemned Hines for driving under the influence, and if players were typically suspended for that, I’d have called for a suspension. I’ve written repeatedly that Roethlisberger is a dog and a jerk. However, the woman in Nevada texted that she couldn’t wait to see him again before waiting a year and suing him and others for $3 million. And the woman in Georgia had a medical exam showing the vaginal intercourse she alleged never happened. I can’t condemn the man for assaults the evidence clearly shows didn’t occur. However, I publicly supported his suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. I’ve called out Ryan Clark for taking head shots and Mendenhall for exercising poor judgment then not taking the consequences like an adult.

I’ve never made excuses for the Steelers’ bad behavior. Nor have I ever trolled other teams’ sites the way you do, posting garbage about all their players and trying to pretend bad behavior or homerism is exclusive to any one club.

You’re welcome to think I’m awful. It’s obvious from the way I posts that I don’t worry about winning pals on the football blogs. But don’t lie about your reasons and paint me to be the hypocrite and bad sport you are. And as for self-righteousness …. oooh, honey, you’d better work on that beam in your own eye.

There has NEVER been controversy about the refs when the Ravens beat (no asterisk, no quotation marks) the Stealers. What does that tell you??? Hmmmmmm…”

It tells me that you spend a lot of time creating controversy to explain away a loss.

  69. In ccoolahan14’s world winning by a touchdown or less is controversial.

  70. This is perhaps the best current rivalry in the NFL – but the trash talking between the teams is getting old and tiresome. “You suck – no you do – you’re weak – you’re dirty – blah – blah -blah”

Maybe that is taught in Pittsburgh, since he isnt the only Steelers player to have that reputation.

Semperfi24: Hines Ward was using what is known as the hands technique of blocking, which entails getting your hands on the core of the defender’s body and then exploding/driving through him, which is EXACTLY what Ward did on the play in the video. It is also EXACTLY what offensive linemen do hundreds of times per game.

Furthermore, in no way, shape or form did Hines Ward use the crown, or top, of his helmet in blocking Ed Reed; rather, he led with the top of his FACEMASK, and his hands, which is sound fundamental blocking technique.

Finally, Hines Ward came STRAIGHT AT Ed Reed, who had plenty of opportunity to see him coming and protect himself or evade the block accordingly. He didn’t and got laid out as a result. So, as much as this was a good play by Ward, it was also a bad one by Reed.

I think the players themselves are total professionals and only do this to give the bottom feeding media something to write about. It’s only internet fans that like to run their keyboards nonstop and talk about payback and bounties. Why? Because on the internet we’re all safe from having to pay the price for voicing outlandish opinions.

  73. Hines needs to hit Reed a little lower next time to shut his big mouth. Also, Harrison was at Big Ben’s wedding on Saturday. Steelers’ solidarity, crybabies !!!!

  74. All these Ravens fans make me laugh. The steelers are SOOOO afraid of Ed Reed because he has picked Ben off how many times?? Come on man.

Tell him to show up for the big games in his big boy pants and play football. Quit whining!! The only Ravens I respect are Suggs, Haloti, and Zibz cuz they back up their talk by hitting. Let’s get this bloodbath goin tomorrow!!

  75. Just watched a “Ed Reed big hits” video on youtube and the only big hit came at about 13 secs and was on a defensless colts WR. As a matter of fact it looked alot like the Massaquoi hit. But, I’m sure the ravens fans would disagree. I think the hit was fine but, I’m not one to whine about cheapshots like Ed Reed.

The rest of the video is filled with Ed Reed getting tipped ints and fumbling alot. So watching past the hit is pointless. Must be nice to become a pro bowler by just catching a ball that gets tipped in the air by your teammates great defensive play. Ed Reed is a glorified punt returner. Hines Ward is a football player.

What opposing defenders don’t love is that Hines hits back. Receivers aren’t supposed to do that…

Although that’s true, I’ve seen him unnecessarily level opposing players while they’re looking the other way – and 30 yards away from the ball. I’ve also seen him pull-up like a school girl when a defender was ready for it. Watch him closely, he’s smart, and although admirably physical, he knows what battles to pick. He knows what he can get away with, and only succeeds due to the element of surprise -usually on a player totally irrelevant to the outcome of the play .

  77. @ ccoolahan14:

Are you kidding me!? What controversial call? The Santonio TD where sportscience (or something else) proved he scored? And No asterics huh?? How bout the fact that your last 2 wins came vs. our 3rd string QB!!! Charlie was 3rd string last year and the year before Dixon was our 3rd stringer. But, let me not make too many excuses or I will start to sound like a Raven’s fan.

  78. Come on Steeler and Raven fans, quit fighting over what happened in the past. I’m sure both teams have had some great highlights etc. What you need to worry about is the future. There you will both see that the Browns should be your main concern. Both of your teams WERE great in the past, but with the age of your stars injurys, off field issues etc. both franchises have seen better days. Be prepared for your linebackers, secondary players being Trucked by Peyton Hillis, Monterrio Hardesty and Greg Little on the regular for years to come. By the way the only Ward you need to be concerned about is TJ “the Boss” Ward not that sissy dancer guy named Hines, that wears the piss yellow and black uniform. He will be laying the wood to your WR’s TE’s and Rb’s in the near future. GO Browns!

  79. Ive been saying this for years, Ward is easily the dirtiest player in the league and has been for years. Id love nothing more then to see someone knock his head off as he goes across the middle before he gets the ball, thats what the old Raiders would have done and that would have taken care of that idiot. steelers have been the dirtiest team since the 70’s, end of story!! Steelers wont be going anywhere this year once again, cant wait to see big ben get pounded in the pocket this year over and over

  80. Poor Poor Eddie – how dare a wideout try to throw a block at YOU. Bro, you can go spit on Hines’ Hall of Fame (soon 1000+ catches, 12k+ yds, SB MVP) bust some day!!!
