Before we all start assuming that the undrafted players who are being rounded up in the wake of the lockout will become Week One starters, let’s keep a few things in mind.
First, teams will be taking 90 players to camp. To take 90 players to camp, a team needs to have 90 players on the roster. And so plenty of these guys will simply be camp fodder.
Second, we’re paying attention to this because football is back and these signings are for now the only source of player acquisition news. Starting tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. ET, that will all change, when teams can begin to negotiate with veteran free agents.
So it’s newsy for now because nothing else is going on. Pretty soon, we will go back to not caring about the undrafted rookies, until one or more of them gives us a reason to care.
