We were leery last night about accepting as accurate the widespread reports from sites and/or Twitter feeds of which we hadn’t previously heard regarding the destinations of undrafted free agents.
Perhaps the biggest name is former Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich, a cancer survivor whom the NFL foolishly invited to the 2011 draft without assurances that someone will pick him.
Multiple reports have linked Herzlich to the Ravens. A team source advised us that the team had not yet signed Herzlich, a response that we interpreted as a matter of semantics, given that teams couldn’t sign undrafted players last night, after all.
Herzlich himself supplied a less equivocal response via Twitter: “For everyone I have not signed with anyone yet and am still making my decision.”
It doesn’t mean he won’t pick the Ravens. It apparently means that he hasn’t, yet.
The placement of a per-team cap of $75,000 on signing bonuses for undrafted free agents complicates Herzlich’s decision, given that teams no longer have the ability to put their money where their mouths are.
