Report: Vikings, Redskins agree to trade, only if McNabb agrees to contract

AP

The talk of the Redskins trading Donovan McNabb to the Vikings is heating up. Now the only question is whether McNabb will buy into it.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that the Vikings and Redskins have agreed to the terms of a trade that would send the veteran quarterback to Minnesota.

But the trade will only go through if McNabb agrees to a new contract. There’s no way the Vikings are paying him the $12.5 million he’s due this season.

And getting McNabb to agree to a new deal could be difficult. In Minnesota, McNabb would only be the starter for as long as it takes the Vikings to get first-round draft pick Christian Ponder up to speed. Given the way McNabb was stung by getting benched last year, he presumably doesn’t want to play for a team where the guy he’d get benched for is already in place.

So even though both the Redskins and McNabb are ready to move on, that doesn’t mean they’re both ready to reach a deal with McNabb’s next team.

  1. What is it about McNabb? He always finds a home, and there’s high expectations, but the dude just never lives up to the hype.

  2. They can’t wait until they cut him because Washington can hold onto him until Week 1 before they owe him his bonus. By trading for him, they get him right at the beginning of camp. They may also be making this move to convince Sidney Rice to stay in town.

  3. Vikings: 6-10 Redskins: 5-11 Group of losers trading losers lol!! Steelers: 14-2 SB champs…. again

  4. As a skins fan I’m pretty shocked that someone would actually trade for McNabb. I thought teams would have been smart enough to wait and let the skins cut him.

  5. Dear Donovan,

You are not what you once were. You need to come to terms with that. No one is going to pay you elite type money to play for them.

    Sincerely,
    The Reality Police

  6. This is just priceless. There is just no way this can actually happen. I’ve been laughing at the Vikings for years, but this one…come on, you can’t give me this ammo, Spielman.

I’m convinced that the Vikings wouldn’t sign Hasslebeck if he was available, just because he’s not washed up enough.

  7. If this trade goes through, Minnesota is the stupidest team in the league. They could get him without giving anything up if they just wait. I doubt very much that there is a long line of teams wanting to sign the choke artist, if any.

  8. It would be funny if it was a McNabb for Madieu trade or something where both guys were getting cut anyways…

  9. @steel6times
They both can argue that they didn’t lose the Superbowl last season

  10. As long as he agrees to a restructured deal that does not pay him more than a few million and its not for more than a couple of years, then I have no problem with this. He has enough experience to teach Ponder a few things and he is old enough where he won’t be around long enough to get in Ponders way much the way Favre did to Rogers.

  11. The Vikings are not making my decision any easier to get direct Tv this year (Free NFL sunday ticket) if they are going to suck, what’s the point!!!

  12. It is unlikely that MN gave up much more then a conditional 5th round draft pick, so I see it as a good move with little risk.

  13. McNabb is looking at $12.5M and he is 34, in all honestly he can put the screws to the Redskins.

He is already set for life, now he has a chance to screw the Shanahan who appears to have lost it has a head coach. So I say put the screws to the Redskins, he has nothing to lose.

I’m not sure what this comment means. How is Hasselbeck less washed up than McNabb? Last year’s stats:

    Hasselbeck: 14 games, 3001 yards, 12 TDs, 17 INTs, 73.2 rating.
    McNabb: 13 games, 3377 yards, 14 TDs, 15 INTs, 77.1 rating.

Looks like Hasselbeck is at least as washed up as McNabb, if not more, but he’s who you’re putting up as the guy they should have signed?

Why do I think that certain people would rip the Vikings regardless of what move they made?

  15. Something must be different in MN under Frazier. The Vikings want an older QB to serve as a mentor and aid the transition to a younger guy. In the past they just wanted squeeze the last bit of glory out of a guy past his peak and ended up paying for it in the long run.

Why not just wait til they cut him??????
    ——————-
Because the Skins are trying to drag this out and you have to get McNabb in to learn the offense if you want him.

  17. It isnt a suprise the Vikings were going to get a veteran QB. Even though they will have to give up a draft pick, here is why McNabb is the best fit:

    1. Other names rumored were Bulger and Hasselbeck. The Vikings line got Favre killed, so bringing in either of these 2 is like putting my grandma at QB. McNabb actually has legs. He was behind possibly the WORST Oline last year.

    2. The Vikes need a guy who can start this year, and realize he may be the backup the following year. I think McNabb realizes it.

    3. They need a QB to show Sid Rice to resign.

    4. They need to find a way to get asses in the seats. Rebuilding this year doesnt stir stadium talk either.

McNabb is a good fit as long as it isnt for more than a 4th rounder, and a huge cap hit.

  18. Vikings will be a told you so moment for McNabb. If he lands with the Vikings teams better watch out! I say this because the moments McNabb was at his best he had some options and a line to protect him. The moments he was at his worst he had limited options and no line to protect him. Im telling you, with what the Vikings have at their skilled positions McNabb will be a huge assest for the Vikes. McNabb takes alot of negative publicity but he had 1 season in Philadelphia where he had an veteran outside threat and B-Westbrook in the back field with a line to block and look where they went. To much was put on his shoulders to win. Look at all QB’s who had “great” careers, they had weapons to compliment them….

  19. Yeah, McNabb to Minnesota will really sell tickets… to the Wild and Wolves games, because NOBODY is going to waste money on the McNabb led Vikings.

This tells me Kenny Stabler truly has nothing left.

OK, OK, you got me. They are both completely washed up beyond belief. I mean, they could just try to develop Ponder, but their offensive line and receiving corp is so pathetic that Tom Brady wouldn’t be able to operate the offense.

  21. I love the vikings but come on who’s calling the shots. this team needs to pull it’s head out more wasted money. this guy is done put a fork in him.

  22. So if McNabb goes to Vikings.. does he encourage the vikes to bail Min and go to LA since its warmer and close to where McNabb likes to spend the offseason in AZ.. Just a thought

  23. @therealfranchise…

It was GREAT as I recall…I can see Tracy Porter picking Brett and Hartley booting the GW in OT like it was yesterday.

Any Viking fan justifying this move is just plain sad and disingenuous.

    Skol!

  24. Uh, yeah… That’s a big if. I get the feeling that Donovan is under the impression that he’s an eight figure QB. I wouldn’t think anyone would tie up more than 4-5 mil or so on him. Who knows? He’d be smart to agree to a new deal.

  25. That’s some pretty negative comments considering not a single aspect of the deal was in this article. What if it’s a “Player to be named later”, or a conditional 5th round draft pick?

  26. “Everyone hated on the idea of Favre to Minny 2 years ago.

    How was that 1st year?”
    ———————–

The one he ended with a patented Special Olympics interception as usual? Is that what you were referring to?

  27. Why do I think that certain people would rip the Vikings regardless of what move they made?

Truer words have never been typed on here.

They could trade for Philips from SD and Packer turds would still be on here cutting it down.

You see, its not good enough that the Packers win the SB. It’s gotta be that Minnesota is the most horrible franchise ever.
I honestly think that the Packers got more enjoymentout of Minnesota being bad last year than they did in GB winning the Bowl.

How warped and immature is that? It’s screwed up and it’s an affliction suffered by a majority of that fanbase.
You aren’t going to change them, which is why i don’t even try. It’s much more fun to make fun of them and make them look even more stupid than they make themselves.

Don’t help the Redskins out, they dug their own grave…

    ——————————————————-

why don’t you worry about your own $hithole 49ers?

  29. NO, another washed up black (ie 1 lucky superbowl in the last 40 years) qb at minnesota. This seasons over already. I wouldn’t doubt at all that they give the redskins two or three picks and pay his whole salary. He may have been good in the day, but his day is over

  30. Since Collins retired, McNabb is one of the oldest QBs available which has been the main prerequisite for the Vikings QB moves over the last 20 years. Favre, Johnson, Cunningham, Moon, etc.

  31. ruvelligwebuike says:
“The one he ended with a patented Special Olympics interception as usual? Is that what you were referring to?”
    ===================================

Yeah, the one that he blew up the Pack twice, dominated the North and ended up in the NFC Championship game.

    That one.

Oh, and BTW, the Vikings just signed Devin Aromashodu. LOOK OUT!!!!! <—-Sarcasm

  32. Kolb – Young and probably be some teams franchise QB but since they drafted Ponder Kolb is not a wise choice besides he would cost too much.

Hasselbeck would be a nice fit but he can’t stay healthy.

    Bulger retired already.

Orton has flairs of brilliance than sucks at times. obviously Denver would try to deal him for more than he is worth.

McNabb has taken the bad rap for years just like Bledsoe. If you check out his career he has had good numbers. Minnesota needs to not spend much no matter who they get. Vikings are involved in 4 of the vet QB talks so we will just have to wait and see.

  33. Vikings just signed D.Aromashodu to a 1 yr contract to catch the deep bombs McNabb can throw…..Rice must be going…Btwice too?? I’m just glad there is football this year. SKOL FANS!!!

  34. I hope he agrees to the deal. I don’t want him out there while my team is looking for another QB.

  35. Why do I think that certain people would rip the Vikings regardless of what move they made?

It’s a little late in the game to be so disingenuous to play the “woe is me, whatever did my team do to you” card.

Even at the beginning of last year, the Vikes thought they were a SB Contender and made sure everyone in the USA knew it.

    Packers SB-XLV Champions!!!!

  36. I think this is actually a good move for the Vikings. They should double their wins this year. No longer 3-13…….I can actually see 6-10. The Wilf’s better get Spielman a contract extension for this one.

Sorry Queens fans……still a crappy O-Line, new system, new coach, crappy secondary….

Trade AP, blow the team up, and start over. It’s your only hope.

  37. Why would he sign anything? He has a contract. They pay him or cut him.

If they cut him, he can sign with anyone.

  38. The players better get a life size cut out of the Ziggster in suit with 16 puzzle sections that they can pull off like the Indians did in Major League.

Only problem is that the one or two sections they will get to pull off will reveal an I Love L.A. T-shirt.

What does a cat sound like choking a fur ball?
    SKOL!

  39. Norm Van Brocklin should probably get a cell phone pretty soon. You never know what next year’s Viking free agent splash will look like.

  40. You can’t wait for him to be released or camp will be over and he’ll be even more worthless to the Vikes than he may be now. As much as it pains me, you’re dead on Favreblows (except the AP part) even if you meant to be sarcastic.

  41. It’s McNabb and Haynesworth for Randy Moss’s old jockstrap and Childo’s “Coaching for dummies” book.

  42. @Purpleguy–

I am serious about AP. I think he is a great RB, but I think teams are not wise to sink all that $ in RBs anymore. You can get a couple of guys off the street that can do the job. Seriously, they are better off getting strong on OL, DL, secondary and QB. I like the start at QB….you never know.

But I would trade AP rather than pay him that monster contract.

  43. They could trade for Philips from SD and Packer turds would still be on here cutting it down.

You see, its not good enough that the Packers win the SB. It’s gotta be that Minnesota is the most horrible franchise ever.

    ———————–
Can we help it you’ve got 0 championships in 50 years? Can we help it you try and build a team with our washed up players? Can we help it your loser team isn’t profitable enough to exist without NFL handouts? Can we help it you call Rivers “Philips” while handing out who’s a turd or not? You must be the same guy who went on about how the Packers’ 60’s was so long ago, but how the Packers never had a run like the Vikings in the early 70’s. Talk about a turd.

And, yes, by the time you set about signing Rodgers, a decade and half from now, he will be no good.

  44. While I cringed initially, I’m starting to wonder if it doesn’t make sense. He wouldn’t be asked to be the whole show here like he was in Washington.

His arm’s still got some zap in it, he’s a decent dude, and he’s got truckloads of experience to mentor Ponder. What the heck, bring him in.

As long as we don’t have to take the price tag with him, he won’t make us worse.

Oh, I’m sorry, Darth. Did we hurt your feelings by feeling optimistic about our team? That was really insensitive of us. That does explain your knee-jerk negative reaction to everything the Vikings do. At least the Packers don’t think they’re SB contenders and they don’t let everyone in the USA know it, or else I would feel the need to make stupid comments on every Packer post.

  46. What? Arm has zip/zap? Are you kidding?? He was throwing ground balls to Santana Moss last year. Guy’s got nothing left. I’m speechless. And a trade? I wouldn’t take him if the cut him loose. If the Vikings are that stupid, and it is possible, bring back the old man Favre. Go Joe Webb.

Seriously, the WR???? Rice & Harvin pathetic??
Shanco is at least above average .

Don’t act like you are superior to anybody on here Hargis. You’re on a NFL blog you nitwit. And you know what……us Packer fans LOVE the fact that it just burns you up.

You guys are so whiny. Why don’t you shut up? All you ever do is complain about other commenters. It’s not our fault that you trade away draft picks for bags of garbage (aka Randy Moss). Or that you trade away a pretty decent punt returner and a QB who, funny, would be the perfect mentor for young Christian Ponder for a 5th round pick that I bet none of you can name without looking him up. Why don’t you spend a little less time complaining about us and a litte more time complaining to the vikings to put a decent product on the field. Oh, and how’s your stadium coming?

You aren’t that dumb to play victim.

    Make fun of chillys trades-check
    make fun of the stadium-check

What the hell happened to you? You used to be a worthy advesary, now you just fall back on cliches. You sound as dumb as Favreblows.

1.) I’m not acting. I am superior to you and a lot of others on this site.

2.) I’m not pissed off about the Packers winning it. 99% of my freinds are packer fans. I was extremely happy for them when they won it. I do have a few that are turds like you, completely irrational and incapable of having an unbiased, non-homeristic view on football.

You’re last line proves just what type of fan you are. You revel in the fact that it “burns” Vikes fans up. You’d think a normal person would revel in the fact that their team won and not care about any other team. That would be normal though, God forbid you have a rational bone in your body.
