Olindo Mare agrees to terms with the Panthers

After spending plenty of cash on a couple of their own free agents, the Panthers have attracted someone from another team.

Per a league source, veteran kicker Olindo Mare will sign with the Panthers.

The deal, according to the source, is worth $12 million over four years, with a whopping $4 million signing bonus.

For a kicker.

  1. Jerry Richardson wasn’t joking when he said something along the lines of a spending spree.

But that doesn’t mean he should go all AL Davis and start overpaying freaking Kickers.

  2. Mare has been solid for the Seahawks. Sad to see him go. He has been a great player for a LONG time.

  3. Ok, three Seahawks are the top FA at their position, and they have lost two (Mare and Hasselbeck). They had better sign Mebane.

  4. Yeah, Mare was excellent with SEA in his time here. Talk of him being a fair weather kicker from MIA was thrown out the window season 1, and really can’t think of any game where he ever cost the Seahawks a win with a bad miss. Decent leg, very good accuracy.

But for that kind of coin thrown at him, a kicker would be crazy not to leave wherever he was at.

That said, all for David Akers in Seattle if possible.

  5. Kickers are a strange group. They have a limited function BUT if you don’t have a good one you are going to lose 2 games minimum-maybe 3. Ask the Ravens or the Cowboys or the Saints.

As a Packer fan I can remember we had a string of kickers between the departure of Don Chandler (1967) and the arrival of Chester Marcol (1972) that were collectively the biggest group of losers ever assembled.

Thats one reason I was very happy to see them re-sign Mason Crosby. He’s almost as good as traitor Ryan Longwell.

  6. Maybe they know something we don’t. Maybe the new coach wants a competition. The Panthers have had a kickoff specialist along with Kasay in recent years, but I can’t imagine paying Mare this much just to handle kickoffs.

Hmm…this is like the third time I’ve seen you trolling the Seahawks in two days. I wonder what team you’re a fan of, hmm…

Seahawks insane to let him go? That’s a really astute obervation considering they DIDN’T.

Did you see what the Panthers are paying for him? Not only that but 4 years when he’s already aging fast? Sure, he’s good but NOBODY was going to top that contract.

  8. I wonder how much of this was done to free up the number 7 for Clause, and consequently number 2 for Cammy Cam…hmm.

Kasay was #4. Baker is #7.

  10. Well, Iknow he can’t kick in the superdome. So, I guess thats good once a year…

  11. Panther fans do not yet realize what a steal this is but they will. Not only is Mare a solid FG kicker who won’t lose you any games, but he has also consistently been among the league leaders in touchbacks. With the new kick off rules in place, this guy is almost a sure thing to have3-4 touchbacks per game, and that can be a huge Special Teams advantage. That kind of advantage is worth that kind of a deal. The Seahawks are really going to miss having such a sure thing on their roster.

  12. The does seem like a lot to pay a kicker, but hopefully a lot of that is incentives. Sad to see Kasey, the last original Panther, go. He was always a solid kicker except when he kicked it out of bounds with a few minutes left in the Super Bowl.

  14. Kasay started his career with the Seahawks…now they’re taking Mare.

Seattle signed the kid from Auburn who made the FG to beat Oregon in the title game. I think they should bring back Brandon Coutu, who lost the job to Mare because he could only KO to the 2 yard line. Back that up five yards, and he’d be getting it three yards deep. Have a nice healthy competition, best kicker gets the job.
