Report: DeSean will be a NoShow

Getty Images

On Tuesday, we reported that Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson was considering his options regarding the contractual obligation to report for duty.  According to the folks at, multiple sources say that Jackson won’t show up.

It remains to be seen when he’ll report.  Under the rules of the Transition Year, Jackson must show up by the 23rd day of the 2011 League Year or lose his all-important fourth year of service toward unrestricted free agency.

It’s no surprise that Jackson wants a new deal.  He’s grossly underpaid in light of his skills, and he’s grossly undersized in light of the game he plays.

The Eagles surely would like him to shoulder the burden of the injury risk for another year.  Jackson surely would like to not do that, and to be paid for what he already has done.

This one could get interesting.  Quickly.

  1. The Eagles have to pay this guy in the are of what Santonio Holmes got, Maybe 3 more mil and an extra year at the back end

  2. Ya the FO needs to hurry up and sign this guy to a long term deal. Vick, too. There is no need for a team that is thinking SB to have the distractions of their best players unhappy about their contract getting in the way of winning football games. He’s wayyyyyy outperformed his contract, too.

  3. Jackson isn’t even the best WR on the team, sorry. He’s good, he’s got swagger, he’s a threat… but he disappeared at the end of last year. He ran routes that avoided him from being hit and Vick felt the need to force things to him at the end of the year which resulted in a disaster. Philly doesn’t need a distraction like this. He obviously needs a new contract, but probably not one he (or Drew) thinks he deserves.

  4. DeSean is only hurting himself if he does not show up. Under the new CBA, Jackson would risk losing 15 % of his signing bonus if he were to miss 6 days of camp, plus 1 % per day after that up to 25%. He would lose about 51,000 if he missed 6 days and about 85,000 if he missed the entire camp.

  5. That story was posted on that website two hours ago.

As I look through the interwebs, not one other reporter has picked this up as a story.

Keep up the great work, Scoop!

  6. As an NFL fan I enjoy watch DeSean play. He’s explosive and it would be a blow to the Eagles to lose him, although I find Jeremy to be the better of the two.

As a Cowboys fan, I wouldn’t cry if he sat out and came back rusty and injures himself

  7. After Drew Rosenhaus said he learned from his experience with TO and the Eagles FO and would handle it different this time around, he has DeSean hold out. Hmm…

  8. Of all the WRs recievers making 4-5 million a year then holding out cause they outperformed their contract in one year (VJAX, T.O. take note) DeSean makes scratch and has a valid point. Hes paid far less then some 1st round bust WRs that have been OUT of the league for a few years.

  9. they have to pay him this season he’s making nothing, the eagles should do a similar move like Tennessee did last season where they add some money onto his current contract then next season maybe we can give him a 3 or 4 year deal. He’s too small do be a 10 year starter in the nfl the hits will catch up eventually.

MeSean is a punk. He is a one trick pony who will break soon. The Eagles would be wise to not pay him.
I think Laron Landry is still laying on the field after being torched….Yeah ok dude, have another.

  11. We havent signed anyone yet…..we still have all that cap room….give him a damn extension! We need to take care of our own a la Ozzie newsome and the ravens.

  12. Fans get on players for complaining about their contracts but he’s been asking for a new one for awhile and no one is doing anything about it. Then the really messed up part is if he plays out his contract, the owner will probably mess around and FRANCHISE him and make him suffer for another year. Sometimes you have to force their hands.

  13. As a Rams fan, I remember when the Rams had the pick of the litter at WR during the 2008 draft. Jackson was Kiper’s highest rated WR, and the Rams instead chose Donnie Avery. We all know how that decision played out.

Whether you consider him a punk or not, Jackson has earned his money. Pay him.

  14. He has outperformed his contract and deserves a new one but the problem is he won’t be content unless he’s overpaid. I’m sure the Eagles would be willing to extend him a year or two and give him 5-7 mil for this year and next 2 but D.Jackson won’t be satisfied unless he’s getting over 10 mil. It won’t work.

  15. Hahahaha! You saw how the Eagles organization choked when it came to re-doing T.O’s contract. They’re not very good at keeping talent happy. Good luck DeSean, and put on some pounds, noone in their right mind is gonna break the bank for a 175 lb punt returner. Well, noone but the Eagles, nothing they do makes sense.

  16. @ eagleempire – and this season LaRon will break the punk in half. You and your drunken fan base will turn on this guy once he is a gimp and cannot act a fool celebrating TD’s. Enjoy another championship less season you drunken scumbag.

  17. “He’s grossly underpaid in light of his skills, and he’s grossly undersized in light of the game he plays.”

His brain is grossly underdeveloped too.

  18. No one SUFFERS through a franchise tag. You make $10Million+ for 1 year of play. If you’re suffering making $10Million, you got other problems.

  19. This is stupid he has taken the high road all along and now he is about to be paid and doesn’t show?

Stupid the Eagles don’t react well to that.

600k is what that bad ass, albeit little, man is gonna make this season… and that right there, is just WRONG!!
    DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Classic Redskins fan…. paying attention to C-SPAN instead of ESPN.

Hey fella, do you know that DeSean is the first player in NFL history to make the Pro Bowl at 2 positions?

Or how about the first in NFL History to end a game with a walk-off punt return?

And finally, DUDE, you just signed Dante Stallworth and you’re going to bag on DeSean. Go back to watching the cherry blossoms grow

Said it before and i will say it again, Kolb and Djax to Arizona for Larry Fitzgerald.

You should stop saying it then, it makes you look dumb.

There is ZERO chance of that deal going down

  23. I love the Eagles for life, and DeSean HAS outplayed his contract… yet for some reason I wouldn’t give him a big deal. He is not going to have a long career. Too small, when his speed diminished and he gets beat up his game will deteriorate quickly. If they could give him a little bump in money for 2 years then let him go that would be wise.

MeSean is a punk. He is a one trick pony who will break soon. The Eagles would be wise to not pay him.

Wow that sounds just like bitter ‘skins fan lmao
I still have that MNF game on my dvr and I watch it from time to time and I never get tired of seeing all that pregame build up just to see on the 1st play D Jackson torch Laron to the point where he was belly-down on the turf looking at Jackson taunt them while running backwards!!!!!! Oh and whats a one trick pony??? Last I checked he can do just about anything…punt return, end arounds, ect. And for the record im a Ravens fan who rarely leaves posts but you left me with no choice after reading something so boneheaded.

  25. Its much better if he just stays away until this contract stuff gets settled than if he reports to camp and becomes a distraction (which he surely would). The Eagles have to give this situation some priority and not put it on the back burner. The sooner its resolved, the better for everyone.

  26. If you pay Desean early, wait until Jason Peters gets a hair crossed again like he did on the Bills. I’d watch your steps in Philly derr’.

  27. @humble – you have no life then. focus on your squad, you don’t want to associate yourself with the drunken Eagle fan – Raven fans are better than that. I know you probably used to be a Skins fan and Baltimore’s general inferiority complex towards DC makes you a purple lover but you are still a better person than the obnoxious Eagle fan.

@polishrod – I live in Philly you twit – i know of which i speak. But cherry blossoms are pretty and there is nothing wrong with paying attention to things other than football. It may do you well to try to find some other interests because by October you will have that stupid confused look that every Eagle fan gets when he runs out of Lager and realizes the Eagles will not be winning the SB yet again. Have fun with that.

I would warn all you drunken slobs not to sleep on the Redskins, or Giants, or Cowpukes. This Eagle team has 8-8 written all over it.

  28. this has been such a disappointing start by this team… they hype their fans up with “we’re going to be aggressive in free agency” bit and none of that has happened thus far… im preparing for a 6 and 10 season now… too many distractions going on to this team to succeed… what a bummer…

  29. This isn’t anything like the T.O. situation. T.O. was one year into a seven year contract and wanted to rip it up. Completely asinine. Jackson is heading into the last year of his rookie deal, which currently finds him underpaid.

But he’s going about it all wrong. The Eagles are going to take care of him…they don’t renegotiate in the middle of contracts, but they’ve never had a problem re-upping young players in the last year of their deals. But every front office is a little busy right now. He’d make a lot more hay just coming to camp instead of pulling this nonsense. But hey, when you hire Drew Rosenhaus, you make it known that you’re only looking out for number one.

  30. and how is desean a one trick pony? the guy ran a 7 yard slant pass for a Td and can run all the routes. Anyone that says DeSean Jackson isn’t a top 10 WR. A. doesn’t understand football B. is a fan of another jealous NFC East team. Jackson has back to back 1,000 yards receiving and is always covered by 2 people.

  31. I’m an eagles fan and I wouldn’t give him crazy money. Yes hes electric and super fast, yes he makes big plays all over the place, yes hes a game changer, but what if he loses a step? You sign him to the type of deal he wants it will only hurt you else where. If you pay him that kind of money are you still going to let him return punts? Probably not. Fact is as a complete package hes awesome, but if you take punts out of it hes just a big play wr that will never be consistent. He didn’t even have 50 catches last season. And after he got drilled over the middle he seem timid any time he got near the middle of the field. I love him and would try and sign him to an extension, but not as a number 1 stud wr contract. Somewhere between a number 1 and a number 2 wr get. Good money not great money, and not for too long either. 5 years tops.

  32. “Jackson surely would like to not do that, and to be paid for what he already has done.”

Jackson should agree to an incentive based contract, then he’ll get paid for what he does. All contracts should be heavily incentive based (see Albert Haynesworth).

  33. This deal will get done, and this would be the year that the Eagles would redo this deal. There is no need to hold out, even though I agree that he is underpaid.

Keep your mouth shut. Do your job. It’s not that hard to understand. The deal will get done. It would have been done last year but the 30% rule would have screwed Jackson so HE chose to wait.

  34. “burgundyandgold says:

Hmm, you said the same thing in the last thread about DeSean. Are you actually a U$C fan? That would explain your irrational and jealous hatred of Jackson.

  35. Hahahahaha!

    “Don’t sleep on the Redskins”

Yeah, because even after a quick nap, they could already be wayyyy out of playoff contention.

  36. this isnt desean fault. hes been quiet for 4 years after playing at a decent to high level.

the eagles need to open the wallet and pay the f&$% up. they’ve done this with too many stars which is why we still dont have a super bowl.

  37. He is vastly underpaid. If he played for the Cowboys, Jones would have given him a new contract by now.

The Eagles continuing to be skinflints has cost them talented players bolting town when their rookie contracts are up before.

And how much of that money from Jerral would he see? Ask Roy Williams and Marion Barber how that’s working out for them.

The Eagles aren’t skinflints. They’ve spent money, and I can think of exactly ONE player they’ve let go over money that made them look bad – Derrick Burgess. And that was six years ago.

  39. Is he underpaid? Yes.

Should he be overpaid? Absolutely not.

He will not have a long career because of his diminutive size, and the way he showboats, it’s only a matter of time before someone snaps and blows him up real bad. Take away his speed and he’s Sinorice Moss with better hands.

  40. Desean and Chris Johnson both deserved to get paid before the season starts. Superstars should be paid like Superstars period. Eagles need to do the right thing!
