Vince Young officially joins the Eagles

Cut loose by the Titans on Thursday after five years in Tennessee, Vince Young has a new home.

As expected, he has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Eagles. The team announced the move tonight.

The Eagles reportedly had contact with Young before he appeared on the league’s official Personnel Notice, a violation of the rules that likely won’t result in any penalty. The Bears and the Broncos did the same thing, reportedly reaching agreements in principle with receiver Roy Williams and running back Willis McGahee, respectively, before Friday’s formal announcement of Thursday’s transaction was issued.

The move provides no downside for the Eagles or Young. We continue to believe that there aren’t 32 quarterbacks better than Young, and that a team like the Seahawks should have considered him as a potential starter. In Philly, quarterbacks coach extraordinaire Andy Reid will get the most out of Young, whatever that may be.

The only oddity is that the Eagles didn’t insist on a second year to the contract. After Mike Vick joined the Eagles in August 2009, it took a full offseason before he was able to truly contribute. If Young shows any potential with the Eagles, it may be harder to keep him around.

Finally, the elimination of the third quarterback rule allows the Eagles to get creative in 2011, activating Vick and Young and Mike Kafka and using Young in unique ways without making him the No. 2 quarterback on game days.

Either way, Mike Vick’s physically risk playing style suggests that, at some point this year, Young will be playing.
