Daily News uses classic “Drop Dead” headline for Nnamdi Asomugha snub

When Nnamdi Asomugha chose the Eagles over the Jets, the folks at the New York Daily News took it personally.

The back page headline in today’s paper reads, “Nnamdi to N.Y.: Drop Dead! Sticks it to Jets and Giants by signing with Eagles.”

Today’s headline is a callback to what may be the most famous headline in the paper’s history, a front page shot at President Gerald Ford saying, “Ford to City: Drop Dead.”

CNBC’s Darren Rovell calls the headline unfair, noting that Asomugha didn’t actually tell New York to drop dead (and neither did Ford). But the Daily News thought it made for an attention-grabbing headline. It certainly is that.

  1. hmmm….i wonder if that conversation rex and revis had about all that “I want to be the highest paid corner in the league….even if its only a dollar more than nnamdi is making” had anything to do with NA’s decision…

sorry, boys. but sometimes that bravado stinks away all the tail you’re trying to bag. what a shame.

  2. I believe Nnamdi told the NY/NJ area “DROP DEAD” not the other way around.

What a colossal embarrassment to the Newark Jets. Left at the alter, hahaha. I guess everyone doesn’t want to be a jet.

    Keep restructuring those contracts.

42 years soon to celebrate 43 years of accomplishing NOTHING.

  3. Why does the “national” media think the other 49 states care AT ALL what’s on the front page of a New York newspaper. New York, GET OVER YOURSELVES!

  4. If this was a headline about Dan Snyder they’d already be served to appear in court later this month.

Wow, NY…..You sound like the little girl that just got stood up at the prom. I guess, that’s actually a pretty exact analogy.

  5. At minimum the Jets would have been using 20-25% of their cap on two players.

The fact they were even considering it tells you how stupid the Jets are.

Nnamdi did Jet fans a favor.

  6. Don’t be bratty NY. If anyone should know business, it’s New Yorkers. Don’t put words in another’s mouth, and be happy that there IS football this year…

  7. NY Sports Torture Checklist 2010:

    1. Eliminate Rangers from playoffs via shootout in the last game of the year.

    2. Steal Cliff Lee from the Yankees.

    3. Erase a 21 point deficit to the Giants in 7:39 and score on the final punt return, all in the New Meadowlands.

    NY Sports Torture Checklist 2010

    1. Steal Nnamdi Asomugha from the Jets

    2.

    3.

    The adventure continues!

  8. Trust me Nnamdi did the Jets a favor….Hes only a lock down corner cause he can run with a reciever…he is not good at attacking the ball or breakin up a pass play…No one ever challenged Nnamdi cause there was no reason too when you have TE running free cause our LBs cant cover and the corner on the other side gettting burnt every other play… If Nnamdi choose the Jets he would be a failer and he knows it thats why he choose the Eagles cause there gonna trade or cut samual…He knows if he played on the opposite side of Reevis everyone would see how weak he is….And I think the guy is a great guy and Im a huge Raider fan…Trust me if he was that great DAVIS would not let him walk…He over pays everyone!!!!!!!!!

  9. He didn’t say drop dead to the Giants because the Giants were never in a position to pursue him. And the Post and the Dailey News are tabloid rags anyhow. No more respectable than the Enquirer ever was.

  10. They’ve done better. This is the tabloid whose most famous headline was “Headless Body in Topless Bar” back in 83′, and another Post classic: “Granny Executed in Her Pink Pajamas.”

  11. Why is it that people around the country feel that the sentiments of some douche bag writer are how all new Yorkers feel about something? And to the guy that said Fu@k ny, come on guy really. I don’t think a city or it’s fans should be judged by a guy who’s trying to sell a paper.

  12. One thing Philly fans will learn is that they just acquired the CLASSIEST player in the NFL.

Nnam would NEVER say “Drop Dead” or any other ridiculous statement to anyone.

We will miss him as he is way more than just a “football player”. Thoughtful, intelligent, and very giving of himself.

Yeah you sure find a lot of those people in the NFL.

    thats what the headline says…….

  14. Wonder what the headline will be when Cromartie tells FATBOY where to go, as he tries to talk his way out of this one, and get him to stay now?

  15. whats great was watching the media, this outlet included fall all over themselves with no clue where he was going. The media stated who was in the lead for a week and didnt even have Philly on the radar

  16. @jaypace really f&^K New York it is the arm pit of this country and smells like a restaurant dumpster and anybody that lives there is rude hate the city hate the people. And above all I HATE YOUR SPORTS TEAMS

Dang, that’s some seriously funny stuff!

  18. Giants have a habit of that. That’s exactly what they did in 4th quarter last year in the Meadowlands!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!! FLY EAGLES FLY!!!!

    _______________________________
Well if they can win 90% of pass defense then they are winning 25% of football if you say 25% is run defense (even though it is less than that since most teams pass the ball)
25% is stopping the pass, 25% is being able to pass the ball and 25% is being able to run the ball. Then It would be logical to spend 20-25% of the cap to be able to win 60% of defensive plays, 90% of the time. but you think whatever can help you sleep at night, HAHAHA

  20. Not to get ahead of myself, but as a Raider fan, I believe we were 2-0 without Nnamdi in the lineup last year, don’t quote me on that but that’s based of memory.

  21. First Cliff Lee tells the Yankees to stick it in their rosin bag and signs with the Phillies. And now Nnamdi Asomugha tells the Giants/Jets to go take a hike.

My, my getting a little Philly-envy, are we?

  22. It’s a freakin’ News Headline for crissakes! Ease up on the whole friggin’ State of NY. (Giants fan living in Dallas). So my Eagles friend calls me to talk SMACK about how NOW they’re gonna win the Super Bowl because of the Nnamdi signing… I just SMH, chuckled and reminded him that while I think Nnamdi is an exceptional talented player, one special guy doesn’t make a team (that has no Lombardi’s) win the Super Bowl. Honestly I’m glad they had to pay one guy so much when their star receiver is holding out. Sure, that won’t cause Jackson to want even MORE of the pie after seeing “game changer” money hit the fan! ALL the more reason I want to see Plaxico back along side Nicks, Manningham and Smith when he returns. When the Giants win, what will everyone say about the biggest free agent signing then???

  23. Its all about money …not NY or Philly…Philly swept in with a bigger better deal…thats all there is to it. The overreaction in here by Jet haters is infantile….See you on the field…bring it!,dont sing it!

  24. Nnamdi’s decision came down to this: Michael Vick or Mark Sanchez? Pretty easy decision.

  25. The Daily News came out with the headline…not the New York fans ….so get a grip you envious 2nd class city dwellers. Go back to your flea ridden couches in your septic tank like shacks that you call home. Then wait for them to roll up the side walks at 8PM cause theres nothing to do in your dump of a city anyway!!! Yea …we pay alot of taxes…and we make alot of money too ..and have and endless amount of entertainment and night life to spend it on. So go eat another corn-dog and stop making judgments on a City you have probably never been to anyway. For every bad thing you think you know about N.Y. I have 5 great things about it that I know are true….So why dont YOU DROP DEAD!!!

  26. LMAO! LMAO! LMAO! LMAO! I wonder how many TD passes you two new york garbage teams will have against us??? its gonna get ugly when we play both teams this year… its going down! after we’re with them, their going to be calling that secondary Interception City, population: Eli and Sanchize!!

  27. Two reasons Nnamdi Chose Philly over NY.

    1. They offered slightly more money.
    2. They have a better chance at winning as they have an offense with a good QB. As a defensive player when you look at actually how bad Sanchez is it has to scare you.

If the jets got him at less than $12 million that would have been a steal. He is still a steal for the Eagles. Look at how much Joesph got from the Texans and how much Cromartie will likely get next.

Where the Jets made the mistake was low balling Nnamdi. They looked at the total value of Revis’ 4 year contract when they should have been looking at as a 2 year, $16.1 a year deal, as its likely going to be redone before next season starts. They tried to get to much of a deal which brought in the Cowboys and Eagles. Supposedly the Cowboys were just a bluff but it made the Eagles react.

Sad as I would really liked to see what a Revis/Nnamdi tandem could have done. In theory it would have shut down both WR’s forcing almost all passes to go to the TE, RB or slot WR which might have resulted in a lot of man to man by the two corners but use a middle zone like the Jets used against the Pats in the playoffs shutting off the Welker and Hernandez routes. It would have been interesting to see how offenses responded to this.

Not to mention having two lockdown corners would have given the Jets a lot more flexibilty in Blitz packages. The only drawback with Nnamdi is he is not as versatile or moveable as Revis or Cromartie. In that sense Cro fits the Jets defense better. But Aso is so much better at covering. Sad he chose the Eagles.

  28. robsterny says: “For every bad thing you think you know about N.Y. I have 5 great things about it that I know are true….So why dont YOU DROP DEAD!!!”

Just a guess, but I’m betting that none of those 5 great things would be Jets Super Bowl rings.

  29. “Its all about money …not NY or Philly…Philly swept in with a bigger better deal”

WRONG. Nnamdi took a pay cut to sign with Philly because he wanted to play for them.

  30. Know this about Nnamdi, he is a very good Con. Nothing wrong with being ALL about the money but say it. Heck I would get all I could get to. He drives a old Car because he is cheap.

He played the Jets and any other Team that wanted to Dance like a Fiddle. Al Davis knows the Dance and that is why he stayed out of the deal. Nnamdi was stunned when he saw that his worth was nothing like he thought it would be.

It is great to see that he ended up on a Team that has NEVER won a Super Bowl and in a City known as a Cesspool. But did he play New York or what? Always remember with Nnamdi is is ALL about the money.

  31. Duh, Philly.Spending all your cap money on so-called skill position players does NOT win championships. When I first put on pads our coach taught us that this game is won by blocking and tackling, neither of which Namby Bambi can do. Nothing has changed Philly fans. Additionally, you still have a choking head case QB. Pleasure yourselves all you want now. Come Lombardi Trophy time you will not be feeling that good.

  32. With all the hoopla that Rex has brought to the jets via his personality and LY hard knocks show. Maybe finnaly the jets fans will realize they are not at the level of a elite destination.

Their still #2 in NY/NJ. In the AFC east they are #2 and in the AFC they are not in the top 5. Even w/all their playoff success the past 2 years they have no hardware to show for it.

They are #1 in Diva’s on a NFL Team. jets fans base closely resembles their over hyped team.

Same old, same old jets, jets, jets!!!

  33. While the Ryan twins were fighting over offers to Nmandi Asomugha like an All you can eat buffet, Andy Reid cut in line and took their lunch money.

Sometimes it’s All in the Family with the Ryan twins…. Hope they lose Cromatie now and we watch Rex left with a big foot in his mouth mumbling something… like this year we’ll win the Superbowl.

  34. @phillyrick22;
You..”I wonder how many TD passes you two new york garbage teams will have against us???”

Maybe none there phillyboy…perhaps we will run the ball down your throat.

LIKE YOU BEING A TOTAL DOUCHE BAG! KEEP CRYING! IT’S SOUNDS GREAT!!! I CAN HEAR IT 93 MILES AWAY……

  36. Give me a break NYC. Cry us all a river.
He wants a championship. Could get it with either the Jets or the Eagles. Who would you rather have as your quarterback, Vick or Sanchez? Come on. I know who I would select. Still would rather have our QB in Brees but Eagles are looking mighty strong. Both sides of the ball look good. I am interested to see how Aso plays. He is going to get tested a great deal now. When with the Raiders, there was no reason to ever throw at him when WRs & TEs were running free on the other side of the field.
Very glad we traded Bush to the Dolphins rather than cutting him. I think the Eagles would have been all over him and he would do well in Reid’s offense. He would get hurt but he would strive when healthy

  37. This shows the sheer ignorance and stupidity shown by the New York Daily News, but the comments on PFT are exceedingly ignorant and stupid. Most of these people shouldn’t even know how to spell. Disgraceful, how the Internet is today. Imbeciles, morons, etc. permeate all aspects.

  38. hahahahhahahahahhahahahah,,, wait wait.
    AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

wow, what a bunch of pansies!

so now thats cliff lee & Nnamdi . . . honestly those two choices tell me all i need to know about NY..

    thats classic.
i love how bitter you all are, its music to my ears.

Atta boy Henry, welcome aboard, jump right into the disgraceful cesspool with both feet since with that whining diatribe you fit right in!

  40. Sure it was an attention-getting headline. Of course, it would have been even more attention-grabbing if it read, “Asomugha possessed by aliens – keep him from signing with one of the two great NY teams!” It would have had as much truth, and gotten much more attention. Plus, it would have the added benefit of announcing to the whole world that the Daily News is nothing more than a tabloid. Of course, we already knew that, but why not pull out all the stoppers?!

  41. That’s Ridiculous. After all the players they snagged last year their gonna print a head line like that? What the Jets and NY cant stand the attention not being on them for once that they gotta stoop to pulling a stunt like that to get a little bit of it back? Ridiculous.

I know the Jets as a team have nothing to do it with it but their media and fans sure do.

They never do when was the last time someone predicted what the Eagles were going to do? The only time their ever right is when another team is involved. Like the Kolb trade. They did have that one right but thats bc of loose lips on the Cardinals side. No one even knew they were gonna go after Jenkins, or Asomugha, or Asante, or Vick, or Kearse, or Howard or etc.. And when they cut someone people act like its so vicous but it really isnt, it justs that no one knows what the Eagles are planning so when it happens it schock. And dont even get me started on the draft. I dont think they have gotten a single pick or even position right in the last decade. Watkins no, Graham no, Maclin no, Laws no, Kolb no, etc..

You would have just as much luck listening to your pillow give you Eagles inside news as the media.

  43. I live equidistant between NYC and Philly, and have worked and “played” in both. NYC definitely has more class, and is much cleaner than Philly. The residents of NYC are far above the residents of.Philly in class and being true.sports fans, not “like our teams or.you are worthless”. After working in Philly for.10 months I begged my company for a transfer. Luckily, my wish was granted one month later. NYC is head and shoulders above Philly, so these comments are making me laugh, considering most of you probably haven’t stepped foot in either city.
Can’t wait for the excuses when the season is over, too.
